.5 sec stutter/freeze every 6-10 seconds

Mack S shared this bug 7 months ago
Reported

No matter what I do I have a game locking stutter every 3-6 seconds. I can change the resolution and graphics settings to minimum and it makes no difference. I have reinstalled all of my drivers and the game. I tried administrator and compatibility modes. I tried increasing it's CPU priority, nothing. No one else seems to be having this issue, either. This is a fresh windows 11 install. I just want to play the game.

This seems to occur the most when constantly rotating my mouse in about a 20 degree circle.

Created a short clip of it happening.

I have 2 different Logitech mice. I have disabled G Hub and it made no difference.

I am reading though other similar issues and it appears there is a pattern of them being marked won't fix. Is this a known issue that you are planning on not fixing?

photo

Having the exact same issue, Tried walking around and it did not seem to freeze, so it's probably related to the camera. I use a SteelSeries mouse.

photo
1

It only seems to happen when the camera is moving for me as well.

photo
2

Yeah. Same. It's super consistent and I have had no luck messing with the settings. It keeps making me walk off of ledges and into walls.

photo
1

Any idea what system settings could cause issues with the camera? Honestly I have been messing with windows mouse settings/ DPI settings and nothing has helped.

photo

I scrubbed the NVIDIA Drivers from my computer and reinstalled them without physx or the audio drivers. No change... Man I wish the people who made the game would actually help solve the problem they made. At this point I wish I could just get my money back.

photo
1

Ok new evidence. It looks like the camera is freezing, but only from the mouse input. I am holing down E in this video and the roll continues even when the mouse input freezes. So the game is not freezing just the mouse input.

Updated BIOS. Still no change.

photo

Tried it with a razer mouse, was logitech up to this point. I have never installed Synapse.

No change, still freezing like before.

Reinstalled USB drivers and SATA drivers. Tested all windows and mouse compatibility settings. Disabled steam input. No change still freezes.

Crazy the devs won't acknowledge this. Every time someone brings it up they wait 3 months to reply, then when no one responds in a week they close it due to inactivity.

Hello Mack Sermonte,

We could not reproduce this issue on current Game version: v2.0.2.51. Does this issue still occurs for you? Could you please provide your Game logs if you still encounter this? You can find your Game logs here:

Evening All,

Ill just jump in here, I am having the same as the original videos shows. Was hoping that the V2.2 update would catch this but it seem to still be persisting at present.

As well as trying relevant to my system above,

Seems to be across the board on any of the worlds I spin up, including the empty world

I have tried updating drivers, messing around with res & general graphics settings, messed about with my mouse dpi settings & disabled mouse acceleration with no effect. only thing that caught my eye was another post related to AMD general performance issues / crashes that was look at in Dec - mine is a AMD Ryzen 5800x CPU so wondering if its possibility related to that (could be wrong) but @Mack @Jared @vanthom are your systems AMD as well? (If so then we have a lead, if not then back to the drawing board).

Attached log files

Let me know if you need me a try anything more to aid troubleshooting this.

Signed,

JRT

I'm having similar issues, my CPU is jumping to 100% with SE2 VS2.2 loaded and it's causing bad stutters and frame drops, changing settings makes no difference to anything, GPU has low utilization also.

photo

Just checked with 2.2, it is still happening. No change.

This seems like the issue I reported a while back: https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers2/pc/topic/48771-choppy-mouse

Yea It is really awful, At first i too thoguht it's stuttering but it seems to be something with input, using arow keys to move around the character camera dosen't produce the stuttering, unlike with a mouse where the "stutter" happens. Might just also be me, but speaking of mouse controll i feel like moving right and left is a slower than moving up and down, might be something to do with the legs dragging around, something akin to reverse acceleration, personally i'd remove this realism feature for better control accuracy if it isn't a bug.

Dosen't seem to be any graphical setting causing it, and i havent found any way to change mouse input in the new 2.2 build to fix this.

The issue persists in 3rd person view too, so not a 1st person issue.

I think the other Thread made by Daniel above a few months ago had someone say the issue dosen't happen in a ship, but it does, also both in 1st and 3rd person views, but it does differ with being a stutter for the ship guide cursor lagging back, the ship still continues to rotate as normal even if the camera lags back.

Also on the other thread a person claimed a high dpi on mouse and low sensitivity setting in game alivates the issue, but havent tried doing it so have nothing more to say.

To summarize, Input Processing Issue.

This is probably one of the 2 reasons im not very keen on playin any SE2 right now, the other is waiting for multiplayer.

photo
2

For me, it's the only reason I'm not playing it. I know I can have fun building in this game, but the game hasn't felt smooth to me, and I have these input issues all too often; it's just not an enjoyable experience sadly.

I was hoping it would have been fixed by now, but that's not the case. Hopefully soon, but all we can do is hope. At least the developers are aware that this is affecting more people than they originally thought

This change talking about mouse input was not the fix. I am still experiencing the issue.

photo
1

Is this actually a stutter or is it just the input from mouse dropping out? I have something that sounds similar and made a post about it however I noticed that it wasn't a actual performance stutter, fps remained stable, just input from mouse cut out briefly, using arrow keys to move camera didn't result in the same behavior. It has seemingly gotten less prominent for me at-least recently, it's much less noticeable now that what it was. I attached a video of it, is this the same as what you were experiencing or is it actual stutters?

photo

I also have this stutter with RX7800XT, R5 7600X, 32GB DDR5 RAM on Windows 10. All drivers up to date, even ran NET framework bug finder, nothing. The stutter comes and goes

Hi,

I have the same issue since release as well.

Tried two logitech mices and two computers, both have the issue (Logitech G305 & G502 X)

Tried different settings for my mouse in windows (Not running G-hub or any logitech software), DPI and enhanced precision but still have the issue.

Also tried changing the sensitivity in game but the issue persists be it at min or max sensitivity.

Using the keyboard arrow keys in game doesn't trigger the issue.

I'd imagine it is a problem processing mouse input, and rather than a stutter it is just that the camera doesn't respond to my mouse input for a very short amount of time every few seconds.

I'll add that on both computers there is no apparent performance spike while it happens.

Laptop : Windows 11 Pro | 32GB Ram DDR4 3200Mhz | AMD Ryzen 7 5800H | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Mobile

Attached today's log files.

Also just tried streaming the game with the steam deck to test Steam input, both the joystick and the trackpad (emulating a mouse input) trigger the issue (With and without the computer mouse turned off).

Attached the logs of that session to that reply.

This is still occurring with 2.3

photo
2

I believe you are right in suggesting it is a mouse issue, I have no fps drop at all really and if I just move my character left to right there is no stutter at all. Seems to be purely mouse input, it drops out as you say for just a half a second causing what looks like a stutter

photo
photo

The issue is still happening in 2.3, making the game rather unplayable still.

@SE2 Community Support, could you give us an update, as in, is this issue being looked into?

A thread was created nearly a year ago for a similar issue and was tagged as "Won't Fix", and we are yet to hear from you on this one apart from asking for game logs.

I will add that there is also nothing relevant in in the windows Event Viewer, and no peripherial related connects/disconnects or anything of the sort appearing using tools like EventGhost.

EventGhost logs from a 2 minutes session where the mouse froze at least a dozen time:

Hello Engineers,

We are aware of this issue still being present however, we cannot reproduce this in-house and as such we cannot find the source of the issue, even with the hardware mentioned here in the thread.

Please note that this does not mean that this issue won't be fixed. We are still looking in to this issue and potential solutions.

I will update you when we will have more information about this.

Thank you for your patience.

Hello,

I am adding this information in the very minor chance that it might help, only because it sounds very much like what I struggled with in the original Space Engineers: stuttering and random glitchy mini-freezes that would occur, go away, freeze for a fraction of a second, or occasionally a full second, and in particular long delays on the menu screen - which made one of my favorite games unplayable. It may have nothing to do with your issue but demonstrates how far outside the box you might have to look to identify such things.

In my case, it was because of the nature of my home network and internet connectivity: I have two computers set up, with home ethernet configured to connect them – while my internet connection comes via Wi-Fi. This results in two separate network configurations for the computers, and Windows in all its glory (and thus SE) keep prioritizing any attempted internet calls FIRST on the ethernet network (which does not have an active internet connection), before looking at the Wi-Fi connection. In most applications, such a delay wasn’t noticeable, but for whatever reason, SE seems to make a lot of internet-based checks at various times. For me, the resolution was to dip down into the OS settings, and manually force Windows to re-prioritize which network it accessed first: doing so returned the game to previous smooth functionality, no stuttering, pausing, etc.

This issue being described here might have nothing to do with what I experienced – but demonstrates that issues that show up in the game may come from the most unexpected of things outside the game. Good luck with this.

Is there anything I can provide in order to help replicate this issue and come to a solution?

I am using a PC with specs:

CPU: Intel 13th gen 13-900KS

GPU: Nvidia 4090 32GB

RAM: 32gb 4800mhz not overclocked

Storage: NvMe: Samsung SSD 990 PRO 2TB (Tried moving to my Windows 11 install NvMe as well and this did not work)

Mouse: FinalMouse ULX Sakura - 2000hz Polling rate (Tried lowering this and it did not help) 1600DPI

Hope this helps in any way if not please request what you need from me to help this matter.

This is a legitimate question. Can we get refunds? I mean the game is not playable. I purchased it day one of early access and I basically set my money on fire.

You don't even have an idea of the issue. Which means you can't fix it. I was a fan of SE1 and it runs great, I waited a year for a fix that will probably never come.

photo

Random freezes but only if I move my mouse.

Any other input works as intended, frames are good, everything runs smooth but when I move my mouse it starts to decently regularly freeze up for a bit.

Attempted fix were:

- changing every setting in game possible to narrow it down (inconclusive)

- changing mouse (inconclusive)

- closing every background application (inconclusive)

- changing every setting in my mouse, dpi, button mapping, polling rate, etc (inconclusive)

- going to every possible different zones in game (inconclusive)

- custom launch commands on steam for the game to force some stuff, which I forgot what I did honestly (inconclusive)

-redownloaded several times (inconclusive)

pc specs:

- Z790 Aorus elite ax motherboard

-two 16gb sticks of g.skill ddr5

- Nvidia geforce rtx4070 super

- intel core i7 13700kf

I have a razer basilisk v3 as my mouse/logitech pro x2 superstrike and a strafe rgb mk2 from corsair as keyboard

Like Mack S, I am also starting to wonder about the possibility of refunds at this stage. I bought the game a while ago wanting to support the team, but the input drops makes it unplayable, and knowing it can't even be reproduced in-house after all this time is quite discouraging.

That being said, I tried Calexar7’s suggestion about network adapter priority and tested it out, but it didn’t change anything on my end. To dig a bit deeper, I disabled my network adapters entirely and even ran Wireshark in the background during a session to see if any network spikes or packet activity correlated with the timing of the mouse freezes but there doesn't seem to be any correlation.

Since you cannot reproduce this on your end, I'd be more than willing to get on a debugging call with the dev team, share my screen, run debug tools if you have any, or collect custom logs in any way that'd be useful for you while the bug is actively happening on my machine. Please let us know what you need to help get this sorted.

This is a common issue for me as well, but it is accompanied by 4-5 second long input lockups where the game continues running but I lose all control. It's infinitely more frustrating than a stutter.

photo

I've noticed this phenomenon too, and I think the engine is fully calculating POIs that aren't visible or are obscured by an inferno. See my comments on this topic:

I see this too now that you mention it, I assumed it was some kind of planet or something lol

photo
photo

Ok new evidence. I really believe that it is a mouse input issue. I opened the debug menu and tracked inputs as I moved the mouse in a circle. The cursor moves smoothly and continuously around the screen but the x and y output drops out at the same frequency that I experience the "stutter". It does not look smooth at 60fps but it is smooth on my screen at 120fps+.

See the attached video, you can see when it drops out.

photo
1

I just want to add. This is only in space engineers 2. It's fine in SE 1 or any other game. The cursor moves smoothly on screen so the input is getting to the system fine.

Do your engineers have any recommendations on things to test for how the program receives input?

photo

Good observation—it seems like only the character freezes. I watched the shield at Vallation Station, and the animation ran smoothly.

photo
photo
1

guys ive been tinkering, i think this might have something to do with the actual character model.

i just tried respawning and it seemed to help. (not much mind you, but noticeably)

it feels like the longer our spacebuddy is out doing stuff, the more... baggage... it seems to carry. and starts showing.

this may be why keen cant reproduce it in house, because they will likely always start a fresh world, fresh space buddy, without just... playing the game and having the lil dude out doing stuff for the ridiculous hours some of us must put in.

As much as i'd like to agree and get some lead on this so it can be fixed, it happens on fresh saves as soon as you load in. It is specifically ONLY on mouse input, be it during character or ship camera movement, first or third person, The stutter does NOT happen in other input methods such as moving the camera with the arrow keys on the keyboard. None of the game settings have any impact on the issue. And it seems that it isn't system specific as people on both AMD and Nvidia systems have reported having this issue. But it could also be a hardware bug of other components such as Motherboards or Ram kits, I've not tried running it on other systems other than my main or changing My Systems Speeds In Bios, I've already gave up on it.

As much as I'd Like to blame windows spaggeti, i did not find any driver crashes, and while there was some semi consistant gpu power dips, aka waiting for further instructions, a very likely driver dying, it wasn't consistant enough for me to link it to the issue.

One thing i was looking into but didn't get to check was how windows 11 has made a change, a reversable change in Regedit, where applications can no longer request a specific cpu frequency for the application, and all fall under a unified frequency, but this info is as random as it gets and didn't find much on it without trying it out.

I've seen one person also mention how network adapters in SE1 had something similar could be an issue, funny windows spaggeti code, since the game does send a good amount of data thru for what i can assume is as it does run game instances somewhat similar to what minecraft does with local world servers.

I've not seen any people who got the game to open on Linux report this but there is few to look at so it's hard to tell if the issue is OS specific or not, If that can be rulled out and it also happens on other OS, so then that would leave the game Engine itself and Hardware, which is still a lot.

Linux user here, I get those stutters as well sometimes.
