Can't Connect to Multiplayer server

GravesAJ shared this bug 22 months ago
Won't Fix

I've been trying to join a friend's hosted server for a while now, and I've been getting this issue where I see what looks like a (mostly) empty skybox. So I decided to close the game, verify files, restart, and try connecting to an official server. No dice. Same issue. So I close the game, try port forwarding, restart computer and router, double check, restart game, try again. Nothing, still get same thing. I do a clean reinstall of Space Engineers. Same result. I can access the f3 and f5 menus, and when I hit f3, I see other players on the server so I know it's not that the server is down, I just can't connect to it. Tried this again with my firewall and antivirus also disabled, JUST in case. Still can't get past this screen. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, maybe this is the loading screen and it's taking my computer a long time to connect. Nope, still doesn't work. I'm at a loss for why I can't connect to multiplayer, because to the best of my knowledge, I've tried every possible scenario. Any suggestions?

Hello, GravesAJ!

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue.

Could you please do the following?

  • Verify your game files in Steam
  • Right click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

/3O3qi55MnPvk5qZKhcWUK0WqicPbr6cxJGRFrtKAiLzJM0OFZaJeR30BI_a1y2cofPJgECGXTJXIJ5TQ90QgzEJWghoYkkAiO4pZ0QWOZLJ5VqZAmdvoMuijH3Sd86JSIj2bnppkgySknc_yLw

  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file
  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

We had a similar report of this https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/only-getting-a-skybox-when-joining-mp-servers which was fixed by the user.

Only after doing the mentioned above (which hopefully fixes the issue) please supply a log file if it is still not fixed:

You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Kind Regards

Hi Laura, thanks for the quick reply! I have verified integrity of game files, deleted the SpaceEngineers.cfg file, as well as the ShaderCache folder, backed up and then deleted the whole Space Engineers Roaming folder, restarted steam, and upon trying to join a server this time, I was greeted once again by the infamous skybox (see attached image.) I am currently uninstalling and reinstalling Space Engineers and will keep you updated if that solves the problem. If not, I will attach the log file as requested.

Hi Laura, I am unsure exactly which log file you need, so I am attaching all the log files in the folder from when I reinstalled the game fresh. VC Redist 2017 was reinstalled, all graphics drivers and operating system are fully up to date, as per your suggestions.

Hello, GravesAJ!

Thank you for these :)

Could you please make sure you clear the filters: Join game – Advanced – click on Defaults button, so the filters are cleared. This can have an affect on the game, if you could remove the filter then provide a new log.

Hello, Laura! I went and cleared filters as instructed, and still couldn't get into a server! I'm trying to connect to World NA #2 as I see there are 7/16 people online currently, so the server works, and it is one of the official servers I believe, so hopefully if we can figure out that, it should be easy to translate to my friend's server! Attached is the newest log file

Hello, GravesAJ!

Could you please double-check the servers? There are what looks like hundered of servers filtered in the new log :)

Hello, Laura! I went ahead and double-checked it, here's the new log! Also, just to make sure I'm doing it right, I recorded myself clicking Join Game - Advanced - Defaults, and then once the server list populated (it takes about a minute for all the servers to populate the list), I join into a server and get the same issue, just so you can see what I'm referring to! Thanks! https://youtu.be/Mvl3Mo8JjU4

Hello, GravesAJ!

Thank you for this! Can you confirm if everything loads as expected in singleplayer?

Hello, again!

I have been looking at other posts similar and it seems similar to these: these https://www.reddit.com/r/spaceengineers/comments/srwwze/server_stuck_in_spectator_mode/

https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/22879-joining-any-server-puts-me-in-spectator-mode

Could you clarify if your internet is ok? For multiplayer we recommend 5Mbit/s or more

Hi Laura, sorry for the delayed response! Single Player does indeed load as expected, with zero issues. I ran a quick speedtest and my download speed is 200 and upload speed is about 20-25

Hi Laura! I realized while looking at the other similar posts you mentioned one of them said they had slow internet, and the other said they tried accessing several servers and couldn't connect. I've only tried to connect to Keen's "World NA #1" server, so today I'll be trying to access every server to see if it's all servers I can't access, or just that particular one! One person mentioned that Keen's servers may be using IPV4 vs home connections that use IPV6 and that may be causing the issue. Can you confirm if Keen's servers use IPV4 while I work on logging in to every server? Thanks!

Hello, GravesAJ!

Our servers are using IPV4, and Steam doesn't support IPV6. Could you please let us know the outcome of your findings with the other servers?

Would it also be possible to supply your Steam name/ID for us to check if there is an issue with your character's body? If you prefer to send this privately, you can DM Kienata#2582 our Community Manager on Discord :)

Hi Laura! I had the same train of thought about IPV4 and IPV6, but never hurts to double check! I tried logging in to World NA #2, #3, #4, and #5 and had the same issue as well on those servers, so it's a consistent issue regardless of what server I try to join. However, I'll share my steam name and ID in the hopes that helps for sure! it's GravesAJ on Steam, and the id is 76561198096032987

I've been having the same issue and can't find a fix :(

I've restarted my router & Modem, tried all of the things Laura listed, along with reinstalling, and disabled my anti-virus & firewall none of which had any luck

GravesAJ

I was recommended to remove Asus Game First, and that seemed to fix my issue! I wonder if it could be doing the same for you if you have it. :)

Hello, GravesAJ!

Thank you for this. Sadly as it's on a number of servers it's not what I thought it could be.

We have this user https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/24996-cannot-connect-to-server who has narrowed the issue down to either their router or ISP. I wonder if you have the opportunity to try a hotspot to narrow the issue down? I appreciate not everyone is able to do this though. Also, their issue isn't quite the same but I would be interested to know if another means of connection caused the same issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, TrippyKip! Unfortunately, I don't have Asus GameFirst so that's ruled out.

Laura, regrettably I'm on a desktop computer with no wireless capabilities so I can't switch to a hotspot to test that. The best I'd be able to do is get on another computer in the same network and install the game to test that. If it is router/ISP issues, what would the fix for that be? Should I contact my ISP?

Thanks!

photo

Hello, GravesAJ!

That's no problem at all. If you are able to test another PC, we could narrow it down to if it is at least the PC if the other one has no issue. If it was ultimately the network/router etc then we wouldn't be able to fix this as it would be one for your ISP but we're not at that stage yet as other things haven't been ruled out :)

Hi Laura, good news! I installed the game clean on my other computer and managed to load into a server, AND drop down in a drop pod! So it seems it's something to do with this particular computer...I've attached the log from the other computer's session, just in case there's something in there that may reveal what worked there and what's not working here.

Hello, GravesAJ!

I'm glad the game is working on your other PC. Looking at the logs, the things that spring to mind straight away are both the Windows version and .net version are different. Not to say this is causing the issue but could you see if you can update these? Also, is your issue PC running a different firewall or antivirus at all?

Kind Regards

Hey Laura! So the other computer that worked is actually the one that's out of date, so I've updated to see if I can still connect and it appears that I can when it's fully updated. On my current computer I have Avast AntiVirus, whereas on the other computer it just has Windows Defender in terms of firewall/antivirus.

photo
1

Hello, GravesAJ!

Thank you for the update. Are you able to temporarily disable or change the level on this to test if this is the issue? Firewalls and antivirus can sometimes stop a few things from happening so this may be the root cause of the issue.

Helo, Laura! Regrettably, turning off both my firewall and antivirus, and even going so far as to uninstall my antivirus didn't help with connecting to any server. I tried Keen NA #4 as well as Keen NA #2 to no avail! I have the logs attached if that helps at all!

Hello, GravesAJ!

Has there been any change at all with this? I appreciate the update regarding trying the antivirus/firewall.

Hi, Laura! Good to hear from you again! Unfortunately, I've tried every single day to connect and I am still unable to connect to any multiplayer server. Thanks so much for reaching back out to follow up! I wish I had better news after 20 days, but unfortunately it just seems like the servers don't want to let me in!

Hello, GravesAJ!

After speaking internally about this, can you please put all the graphical settings to as low as possible and try to join a server? Please then join a server and let me know the outcome. I can see the graphical settings are particularly high and would like to see these settings changed.

Kind Regards
