Welding Block Selection Very Poor

When I try to weld a projected block, the UI constantly flickers from showing nothing selected to the block selected, so when I try to weld it, it's constantly flickering and barely welding at all because it needs to be solidly welding for some fraction of time for any progress to be done it seems.
I think it might be related to moving grids but not sure. I am trying to weld a ship that is not connected to anything so is drifting very slightly. Locking it to a platform seems to have a significant improvement but still flickers.
I have tried different distances and angles to the grid to no consistent improvement.
