Sensors do not detect players who are sitting in a chair, couch, or cockpit.
Solved
Sensors, when set to detect players, are unable to detect players who are sitting in any kind of chair.
This is not only annoying when building an automatic lithing system, (anytime you sit the lights go out) but also for any kind of ship boarding scenario. Enemy players can effectively shield themselves from sensors by sitting down.
That alone makes sensors useless when trying to detect players.
I therefore propose: sensors, when set to detect players, should also check for occupied seats within range.

Hello, Phillip!
Thank you for the report. I am just looking into this now and wondered if you're able to provide that world at all to have a look at? It looks like a great example for testing.
Kind Regards

I would see a conflict when you have a sensor only set to detect ships, (aka, to turn on repair welders), and a sensor to detect players (aka, to turn them off for safety reasons) ... if you fly the ship over, what is going to trip them? The player is protected inside the cockpit, so it would seem silly to have a sensor trip for someone who is inside a cockpit ... hmm ... catch22s abound.
