Random hangups in game

Bob Jones shared this bug 4 years ago
Won't Fix

Good Morning,

After the frostbite update I've experienced random hangups in the game. I'll be playing the new Frostbite scenario and the game will hang for a good 10-15 seconds before resuming. I thought this was because of auto save issues but after exiting the game I confirmed that it wasn't autosaved due to the fact that I lost all my progress.

I tried to replicate the issue this morning, but after a hangup at 10:33 on the main menu I was unable to get it to happen again while playing a creative map, despite flying around, shooting, and just sitting idle.

After playing through the frostbite scenario again I rushed through things in attempt to see if loading in objects would cause a hangup but it didn't and I was able to get multiple drones to spawn and eventually kill me.

I restarted my computer and quickly started Space Engineers to see if loading the game initially would cause the hangups but it didn't. Later today I was playing again and I experienced a hangup for about 20 seconds, long enough for Windows to try and close Space Engineers and submit the problem to Microsoft. This happened at around 1:21, and I exited Space Engineers right after it happened.

These hangups, are they akin to stutters? like... everything will be moving normal then stutter, then continue again, then stutter.. and so on.

If this is the case, something you can try is resetting your graphics "Quality preset" to medium, this will reset every option, then load the game and see it it remedies the problem.

If the problem is fixed by doing this, then raise the separate graphics settings one by one to figure out if any one setting is causing the issue.

Yup saw that while looking through other tickets, looks like I'm another lucky customer, though the good news with the next Xbox being AMD means this will no doubt be a top priority!

Also had the game crash during the intro video.

I know I look like an idiot with my suggestion but I am dead serious, have you tried changing the graphics quality preset to medium, not touching anything else in graphics settings.. then testing to see if it fixes the issue?

Then after that you can change the separate graphics settings.

If you have and the issue is still present then it really must be a different problem to what I was having.

Not a bad a idea, and certainly worth trying. Went into a creative game and set the presets to low, and stood around, soon enough the game froze and after waiting 40 seconds I clicked until the "close application" option appeared. Oddly enough the resource usage was high, but after getting the "close application" window to appear it dropped down to like 1% cpu and 53mb of ram.

At low presets my GPU was barely pushing 50% utilization, and the cpu was at maybe 30%

Crash occurred at 14:21 this time there is lots of fun error messages in this log.

After the new update this is still occurring unfortunately. Started the frostbite scenario and encountered 2 hangups, 1 at 3:12 for about 10 seconds, the other at 3:14 for about 30 seconds before I closed it for being unresponsive.

Hi Bob, could you help me test a solution on your end?

Please try deleting your Space Engineers shader cache, which lives in your appdata folder

AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\ShaderCache2

(Type %appdata% in your windows start bar).

After this, relaunch SE and it will rebuild this folder.

Hoping to hear your result!

Thanks

Deleted the cache files and started a creative game, encountered a hangup after about 2 minutes of gameplay. The game was able to recover after waiting long enough (about 15 seconds). Exited the game after that, occurred at around 6:08
