2023-07-11 Steam dedicated home Server cycles startup
Won't Fix
Hey Good people
I've been trying to start a home server but to no avail.
It starts as per the pic and then it just starts again continuously.
It has never worked before so I have no reference to work from.
There is no plugins
All I can say its a separate PC- Windows10, Nvida1060 Graphics, i7- 4th gen,16 MB Ram, SSD Drive
I have run Servers like Stationers, Scrap mechanic, Rust and it worked great.
Port forwarding has been done
Direct connection does not respond. Not that I expected it would.
Any Ideas, what I am missing,
Thanks for a great game. At least I can join a friend across town but we play directly from his local game.

Hello, Jan Dannhauser,
thank you for contacting us and I am sorry you are experiencing this issue. Can you please provide me with more information?
Are you using VPN? How strong is your internet connection? Are you connected through cable or wi-fi?
Can you please provide me with two logs from your latest attempt to launch the server?
You can access your first log file by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
The second one will be here: \Roaming\SpaceEngineersDedicated.
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards,

Hi Support Team.
I am not using a VPN.
I have a Fairly good Fiber connection. 100Meg up and 100Meg down. It's been serving me well.
I connect to my friend's PC several times a week and we run fine. I do not suspect a connection Issue.
My gaming PC and The server runs on a 100 Meg Hard line to the router. We run 4k Movies from all the Popular paid Sites without issue.
Many attempts to connect are attached. I know you asked for two but I felt Generous.
This may not be relevant. Do I need a Copy of the game on the steam account running on the Server PC? Usually it's not a requirement to run a dedicated server and have a second copy of the game running on the server pc.
Feel free to ask more questions.
Regards.

Hello, Jan Dannhauser,
thank you for the logs, however all of them are almost a year old. Are you trying to run the server right now or did this happen in the past and you are now reporting it? Can you please provide me with a log from your latest attempt? Simply try to run the server, then when it fails, close it and go to the folder and search for the newest log. I do not need the DSGUI ones, the Dedicated one is enough.
I am not sure what you mean by second copy. You need to have Space Engineers and Space Engineers Dedicated server on your Steam account.
When you launch the Space Engineers Dedicated server from Steam, do you then click Run as admin and then click Yes and then Continue to server configuration?
Can you try to verify your game files in Steam?
-Right click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards,

Hi Support Team.
Ok so this is the last one generated. Even though I have tried multiple times after that up to now it does not create a file log.
Not sure at what point the log file should appear but I've restarted the server over and over but no Log file. The one attached is the best I can do for now.
I leave it after selecting the save and start button. It then Starts and restart continuously and then eventually it hangs. Then I have to force close it by using the End Task in Task Manager
Its been Cycling through the restart for 5 min now and still going. I took a short video so you can see what it does. Its as if it does not complete the startup. it just loops
If you want to remote access to see for you self we can arrange. Not sure what the time difference is. I am (+2 UTC) Africa
We can use Any desk or TeamViewer.

Hello, Jan Dannhauser,
thank you for the log and a video. It seems like you are missing Havok, verifying your files should resolve this problem.
Can you try to verify your game files in Steam?
-Right click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
Also it seems like you were trying to run several instances in the past. If you are running several instances, you need a port for each one. Also the ports cannot be used by another program or process.
Thank you in advance.

Ok so stand fast.
The dedicated server runs independent from the steam account through SteamCMD. Correct?
The PC that I use to run my game servers does not have Space Engineers installed in the steam account. (Wife’s Account). Space Engineers is installed on my PC only.
So I cannot verify files that are not there. I did however remove the dedicated server files and did a complete fresh install using.
“
C:\SteamCMD\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:\Programs\SpaceEngineer\ +login anonymous +app_update 298740 validate +quit
“
The issue remains even with the fresh install.
The question as I asked before” Do I need a Copy of the game on a steam account running on the Server PC? Usually it's not a requirement to run a dedicated server and have a second copy of the game running on a server pc.” This PC is separate from my Gaming PC
Reference testing that I have done to ensure Network is intact.
Stationeers
BATCH FILE:
C:\Programs\stationeersalpha\rocketstation_DedicatedServer -nographics -batchmode -settings ServerName "AlphaSpace" StartLocalHost true ServerVisible true AutoSave true SaveInterval 345 ServerPassword pass ServerMaxPlayers 4 UPNPEnabled true GamePort 27015 UpdatePort 27016.
There is no Window for pre-settings. Any changes must be through the batch file. Some game use this and others a window based setup like Space Engineers. Does not matter.
The dedicated software runs independent from steam as there is no Game loaded on steam
Bottom line is, it stars and it is accessible from both myself on the LAN and externally from a Friend. See Photo Attached
I hope this info helps
Thank you

Hi Team
Just an add on to the above message. This is once again the sequence that I start up the server. Pic 13 shows where it stops and then it restarts again. The cycle continuous on and on.
Pic15 shows the last log file. No new log files have been created even though I have started the server more than 10 times after removing the old log files.
Is there a another way to force the startup to create a log file even if it does not complete the sequence?

Hi Space Engineering Team
Its been a while now and I have not heard anything. Maybe just a "We are looking into it" would be nice. Else it feels like I am talking to my self and I am not a good listener. :-)
I see someone reported having the same issue. Feel free to contact me, to log in remotely on my server pc for diagnostic purposes.
Your feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Space Engineering Team ( Problem Found )
I have installed the Dedicated server on my Game PC and it started without a Glitch. The conclusion is that you need a copy of Space Engineers in steam on the PC running the Dedicated server. This is a bit disappointing but hope you can resolve this.
I don't want to buy a 2nd copy just to run as server that should not need this in the first place. "Hence the Dedicated server part"
Anyway your feedback would be appreciated.

Hello,
thank you for all the additional information.
You don't need two copies of SE if you want just to run server on one PC, while playing on the other; you still can run both – the server and the game itself – from one PC, where you have the game installed on.
However, if you insist for any reason to have it set like this, make sure you are doing everything right and have the correct prompts written.
You can double check how to here:
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD
and here:
https://www.spaceengineersgame.com/dedicated-servers/
As you can see, the prompt should be "Command line: “steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir somedirectorypath +app_update 298740 +quit”" if you search for "cmd" on this provided side.
I can see that you have different prompt.
Please rewrite (copy-paste) this prompt that I shared you here or from the shared side and let me know if it gets any better.
Kind Regards

Hi Space Engineering team
Thank you so much for responding. Always nice to know you care about us little guys. J
So I did download the dedicated server files again using the format you gave me. It did not make a difference at all, unfortunately.
For my next trick a set the two PCs on the same screen via any desk for you entertainment.
If you look at the pictures you will see on the left is my gamming PC. This will of course have Space engineers fully installed. The dedicated server has been installed as you can see.
To the right is my remote server PC that does have Steam installed but there is no Space engineer copy installed on it. The dedicated server is installed as you can see.
Now if you look at picture no.3 you will see the server started fine on the left PC but does not on the right hand PC. Only Difference so far is the right hand pc does not have a copy of Space engineers.
So your question may be.” Why not just run it on the left PC?” Problem solved. Yes and no. My gaming PC is not always running for various reasons.
My Server PC is on 24/7 as it is used for other Tasks as well and if my Gamming PC is off, my friends can still access the server without issues.
Is there a way to make the dedicated software download the “Missing files” called Havok spoken about above? Will this not resolve my issue?
Or mimic a space engineer copy on the steam account on my server PC. I could of Course buy a copy and install it on the server PC hopping it would resolve my issue. It kind of feels defeating the object of having an independent Dedicated server so I am not “Keen”, to go that why. Pun intended.
Thanks once again for your assistance so far.

Hello, Jan Dannhauser,
you do not need a copy of Space Engineers on both of your PCs. However from the pictures you send, it seems like you are running the server as instance. In that case please send me the logs from here instead: %programdata%\SpaceEngineersDedicated\"nameofyourinstance".
Can you please try to run the server as local/console and not instance? Then please report back to me if it helped.
Also please check if the instance is not running from the startup. You can find it here: Win+R>services.msc. It is set up by default to start automatically. Which means it could collide with the new one if it is already running in the background. If you notice that this is the case, then set it to manual.
Thank you for letting me know if it helped.

Hi Space Engineering team
I did as you suggested and hopped it would be as simple as using the Local /Host option. I did not actually try this before. Always thought you had to create and Instance. Sure there is a detailed explanation on how everything works and should work. Unfortunately it still did not give the anticipated result.
There was however a difference. The selection buttons did not grey out permanently this time and I could actually stop the operation. The starting sequence did stop as per the picture and did not cycle or continue in any way. There was also no indication that the server was in operation.
Thanks once again for your assistance so far.
