The game forces Windows into sleep mode after some minutes afk.

Need More Information

I have a brand new windows 11 laptop with a GTX 4060. Everything is updated properly and my machine is not overheating. I have disabled sleep mode in Windows power settings completely. Yet no matter what if I leave the game running and go AFK after just a few minutes my computer goes into sleep mode.

Hello Engineer,

thank you for reaching our forum with this problem. We are sorry that you are experiencing it.

Can you please share me more information on this subject?

Are you experiencing this problem only with the game? It is not happening when playing any other games or just by leaving the PC running?

Can you maybe define more those "few minutes", please? It is any set moment, or the time of entering the sleep mode also differs from time to time?

Did you experience this problem also in the past, or it just started to happen now? If it was not happening in the past, is there something that you have for example changed recently on your PC; meaning both HW and SW?

Is there any difference when you e.g. play the game in multiplayer (servers, Lobby mode), and when playing solo? Or the behavior is the same no matter the actual mode you are playing on?

When you are back on the PC/in the game, it is working normally? Or are you e.g. in Esc menu, or back in Main menu? Please let me know how the game looks and behaves afterwards.

Please share me a log file from any game session where you experience this problem on your side.

You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards

It only happens in space engineers not in any other game or application. The sleep settings in Windows are completely disabled. It consistently happens after five minutes AFK in game. If I hit the windows key to bring up the desktop and leave the game running in the background it does not happen. The game does not crash and it continues running even after putting windows into sleep mode. When I log back into Windows it is still running. Since it doesn't crash it doesn't generate a log file.

I am not from Keen. Fairly sure game cannot cause a laptop sleep mode. Check your laptop power settings and change sleep mode to never.

I wouldn't be reporting this bug if it wasn't happening my settings are set on never sleep. This has been a problem on two laptops and has only happened with this game and it always happens with this game. Space engineers is absolutely putting my laptop to sleep and it is doing so in a way that seems like a security flaw. I'm not the only one who has experienced a similar bug it has been previously reported but was ignored.

Since this happens with a cryopod, I'm wondering if this is a server, and if "pause empty game" is set. I have seen servers going into sleep mode when the last player exits the game.

Nope single player game multiplayer turned off. I would like to put myself in to the cryo pod while I am afk for things like the bathroom or dinner. Now I have to tab out of the game or it will shut my PC down.

Hello Medullan,

Thank you for your continued updates on the “AFK sleep mode” issue. We understand how frustrating this can be.

To further assist in resolving this, please try the following steps:

Verify Game Files in Steam

  • Right-click Space Engineers in your Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

Delete Game Configuration

This will reset your game settings to default.

  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Delete Shader Cache

  • Same access as SpaceEngineers.cfg

Once done, check if the issue still occurs. If it does, please try the following as well:

Windows Power Settings (please double-check, even if already set)

  • Control Panel → Power Options → set Sleep and Hibernate to Never for both plugged-in and battery
  • Disable Hybrid Sleep and any active screensaver

GTX 4060 / MSI Settings

  • NVIDIA Control Panel → Power management mode → set to Prefer maximum performance
  • MSI Center → set Extreme Performance mode and disable any Eco/Hybrid saving features

Mods, Scripts & Launch Options

  • Test in a clean, mod-free world
  • Remove any Steam launch options
  • Ensure no plugins are installed

Steam Client Checks

  • Disable Steam Overlay for Space Engineers
  • Turn off Big Picture Mode auto-start and any controller idle timers
  • Try running Space Engineers directly via SpaceEngineers.exe (outside of Steam) to see if sleep still occurs

As requested in our earlier response, please provide log file from the game session where you experience this issue. Logs are generated even if the game does not crash, and can be found in your, AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers folder.

Kind Regards

as you can see windows is entering "modern standby mode S0 Network connected" due to idle timeout.

This only happens in space engineers and only while paused or in some kind of cockpit\cryochamber. For some reason the game is telling windows that the computer has gone completely idle after 5 minutes in situation.

Hello Medullan,

Thanks again for the detailed follow-up. Since the previous troubleshooting steps didn’t resolve the issue, there’s one more change that may help. This is a safe system-level adjustment that often provides a permanent fix. But please note that it involves editing the Windows registry. We recommend creating a restore point before making changes, just to be safe.

Step 1 - Check if Windows is using Modern Standby

Open a Command Prompt and type:

powercfg /a

If you see “S0 Low Power Idle (Modern Standby)” listed, your system is using Modern Standby. This mode can sometimes trigger idle timeouts even when applications are running in the background (such as paused Space Engineers sessions).

Step 2 - Disable Modern Standby via Registry

  1. Open Registry Editor (press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter).
  2. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power
  3. Inside the Power key, look for a DWORD value named:
    PlatformAoAcOverride
    - If it already exists, double-click it and set the value to 0.
    - If it doesn’t exist, right-click in the right pane → New → DWORD (32-bit) Value → name it PlatformAoAcOverride → set the value to 0.
  4. Reboot your PC.
  5. Run powercfg /a again, S0 Modern Standby should no longer be listed.

After this, Windows will use the traditional S3 sleep mode instead of S0 Modern Standby. This prevents idle timeouts from interrupting the game, allowing Space Engineers to remain running (even when paused or in a cryochamber).

Please let us know if this resolves the issue for you.

Kind Regards

This does not resolve this issue for me. S0 Modern Standby is not a bug it is a feature of windows. No other software I use triggers it only your game. That is a bug with Space Engineers and cannot be appropriately resolved by editing my windows registry. If you are asking me to do this edit to confirm that this is the cause of the bug in your software I can do that but then I will change it back to the correct setting and expect you will fix the bug with your software. I don't believe you actually need me to verify this is the bug you have the information you need to reproduce the issue yourself now and should be able to verify this on your end. RegEdit is a workaround not a bugfix. While I appreciate you explaining the workaround it should be directly stated by you that this is just a workaround, and that now that you are aware of the steps necessary to reproduce this bug you will work on fixing it. Either way I appreciate your time, please let me know if you do in fact need my help verifying the cause of the bug and/or let me know that you have added the bug to the kill list and will be working on it as soon as is reasonable.

Hello Medullan,

To provide some clarification, the suggestion we shared was intended as a workaround, not a permanent solution, for cases where Windows unexpectedly enters standby mode. This adjustment has resolved similar issues in some setups, which is why we recommended giving it a try. We apologize if it was perceived as a definitive fix.

To help us investigate this further and ensure we have the right details, could you kindly confirm a few points:

  • After applying the workaround, did the behavior in Space Engineers change at all (e.g. did it prevent standby while paused/cryo, even temporarily)?
  • Did the registry change affect any other programs or system behavior on your laptop?
  • When this happens, is the system running on AC power, battery, or both?
  • Could you also share your MSI BIOS/firmware version, and whether you have any power/standby options enabled or disabled there?

Your input here would be very valuable in helping us narrow down the reproduction steps. Thank you again for the time and detail you’ve provided, it is much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
