Sound bugged after update/Warfare DLC

Michael Shahan shared this bug 2 years ago
Won't Fix

I bought the DLC at the same time steam updated the game so I don't know which may be responsible. After the update/DLC install sound is now mono and non-directional. Also, no sound transmits in pressurized environments when player is not in contact with a grid. It behaves much like being in non-pressurized environment and not in contact with grid.

Hello, Michael Shahan!

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. There is a thread for specifically music being in mono here https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/music-is-in-mono-why I am unsure if this is all sounds for you or, just music. I would suggest the following just to check off the more obvious things first. Please let me know how you get on :)

  • Verify your game files in Steam
  • Right click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

/bfSnH0rGoN-NgctSWBJN3LfvWZvgnfye9BrPgucxV0n8TDpNc-7yZYwSifdRXyl1quu20KGUNmHzSf6VGRbhWS4a_EYn2MclxJSOz6eVarmz-fhTWVaofVOAVZN_l_leF9dgQ5GF

  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file
  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

This bug affects all sounds. I have verified integrity of game files but have not reset the config file. I'm loath to remove the cfg file but will try that. I don't understand how shaders might effect sound but I'm not a tech wiz and will try that. I'm not about to reinstall the game unless that is the last resort. Operating system is fully updated.

The game was working perfectly right before the update and DLC install then it immediately developed this problem. Would it be helpful for me to submit my save file before going any further with reinstalling stuff and reconfiguring the game?

Hello, Michael!

Thank you for confirming. Yes please do supply your save file if possible. Is it only affecting a single save? I know you mentioned all sounds but wondered if it is all sounds in the one save?

  • You can access your save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. There should be a folder with your SteamID and your saves.
  • Please zip the file and attach it here. If you are having difficulty attaching files you can optionally use Google Drive. When sharing a google drive link please make sure it is set to be downloadable by anyone with the link.

Thank you Laura,

Did some more testing this morning before going to work. This bug affects other saved games as well. It affects all sounds, not just some. To describe it best, it is very similar to the effect of being in a depressurized environment and not touching the grid. You know how in a non-pressurized environment all sound not local to the player (inside the suit basically , like breathing) transmits through contact with a surface and is thus muted, then when you break contact with the surface all those sounds can no longer be heard? The bug causes sounds to act the same in pressurized environments, except those sounds aren't muted when in contact with a surface. Also, sound quality seems affected as well. I don't get as good a 3d representation as I did before, almost as if sound is reduced to mono, but I can't be 100% sure about that. Also, when I change to arcade sound from realistic, this problem seems to go away. Since I've not played with arcade sound for literally years, I don't know if it is behaving correctly or not.

Windows and all drivers are up to date.

I will send my save file to you tonight sometime after I get home from work.

Hello Laura,

Here is my game save file:

Hello, Michael!

Could you please try to attach the save again? It appears to have only attached the SBC single file.

Sorry about that! Here's the folder.

Sorry, after uploading it tells me max file size exceeded.

Hello, Michael!

Thank you for the file, I got that to load. A couple of things - The first and I apologise if it sounds really silly, I noticed when I loaded in that the helmet was open with 'J' which when I toggled it again, did change the sound and wondered if this was possibly your issue? I appreciate it probably isn't however, always worth checking! Secondly, you have a lot of mods in the world provided, if you disable all these mods and play in a clean world, are you getting the same result? Just to rule out any mod interference.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for looking at it so quickly. It's not silly, but yes I do understand how the helmet works :). Did you notice when in a pressurized environment and hovering above the grid so you are not in contact with it that the sound is muted and rather "patchy" like the sound is breaking up? Best way to test this is to turn off the gravity generator from the platform then use the jetpack to get into a hover, then turn off the jetpack so it's not making noise and you just hover in the air. While in a pressurized environment we should be able to hear the sounds in the surrounding area. But with this issue those sounds are muted and seem to break up quite a bit.

Now, to your other point. Yes, there are quite a few mods in this save. I have another game with the same mods as this one that isn't acting this way, at least when I tested it this morning. The player is on an earth like planet, however. Not sure if that makes a difference. Earlier I thought all games were affected, but that's not true. I also started a new game with no mods and have not had the issue. I'm stumped because the two games that use the same mods are behaving differently.

Not sure if this is helpful, but when this happened this was the sequence: had been playing on this game file when the update came in. I closed the game and did the update and bought the dlc at the same time. I went back into the game and it was fine. Then I closed the game some time later and came back to it a day or two later. When I came back to it steam gave me a notice that looked like I had installed the game new and needed to agree to the EULA or something like that before continuing, which I did. Frankly, my bad, I didn't look to closely at the pop-up. It was after this that I noticed this bug.

I really appreciate your work on this. I'd hate to lose this file since, as you can see, it's a large world with a good deal going on.

Hello, Michael!

Thank you for confirming, I thought I would just double-check :)

Thank you for the extra information, I really appreciate it. So far, I can't seem to reproduce any sound issues and I've been going backwards from your save and another save in space to try and notice any obvious differences. Is it at all possible you are able to record a short video so I can have a listen to what it sounds like for you and that way I can see if that is also able to be reproduced for me? At least that way we can pinpoint if it's the save or, the PC/settings that are causing the problem. It's very interesting to me that this happened with an update and it wasn't happening from the beginning of the save!

Thank you for all your cooperation so far.

Thanks Laura. Yes, I'll record a short vid tonight and send it. I thought it might be a mod, and it still might I guess, but since the other game doesn't act the same way that stumped me.

Hello, Michael!

Thank you so much. It still might not be of course :)

I will await the video :)

Hello, Michael!

Thank you for providing the video, I really appreciate it. Now I can hear that this isn't happening for me in your save file. I would certainly go back to my earlier steps and if at all possible, re-install the game. Make sure to pop any backups in a safe location though first as I know this save in particular you've done a fair bit of work in! Please let me know how you get on with this when you are able to do so :)

Hello Laura,

Ok, I'll run through the steps and let you know how it goes. Thanks for looking into this for me.

Michael.

Hello Laura,

On the reinstall, do I copy the entire old Roaming folder back into it's place? Or only parts of it?

Michael.

Ok, I probably should have waited for your answer, but I went ahead and just restored the entire folder back in place after new reinstall. It did not resolve the issue. I guess the only thing left to do is remove mods one at a time and see if that's the issue.

Hello, Engineer!

Because there is no new comment from you, and we are unable to reproduce the issue on our own, I will close this thread now as outdated.

If you or any other player will experience this issue again, please make a new thread and provide all needed info there.

Thank you for understanding.
