Stutter/Freeze whith version 1.194

Toshiwo Araki shared this bug 4 years ago
Won't Fix

Hi,

I have updated the game to the public test version (1.194) and I've noticed that it has frequent stutter, although, when not stuttering, performance seems to be better than the regular version, this stutter is so frequent that I can't play the game.

It happens in local play but it's even worse in multiplayer.

It looks like it's related to being close to other stations or ships, when I'm playing in empty space it does not happen untill I have more than one ship close.

With the 1.194 version released, ive noticed a few things that also were back at the public-test. First of all, the game is laggier than in the previous update, and this is not due to any HW since ive reverted to the 1.193 version and it ran better. Second, the stuttering for me occurs mostly when opening blueprints, where it appears as if the game is re-rendering everything with textures disappearing and becoming LODs. And lastly, the freezing issue still persists.

Edit: After finding some articles, it turns out the specs have nothing to do with this as multiple people have reported the problem with specs ranging from higher and lower.

Update: The latest patch seems to have fixed the LOD and loading issues, as well as the wheels not working properly. Albeit the game still feels somewhat slower atleast its playable now, so heres hoping it gets better.

Hotfix didn't help.

Have big freezes over a Minute long.

I like this game so much, but that freezes make it unplayable.

I ve reverted to 1.193

photo

I havent gotten a freeze just yet, but its completely random so the chance still exists.

After reverting to 1.193 for a few days I've downloaded again the latest version (1.194.080, that was released on 2020-03-20), and apparently it works better, I'll have to test on the same scenario I was playing when experiencing the issue.

Will update once tested.

I've tested the green base scenario where I was experiencing that problem and it works fine now.

I'm happy again now.

After update today.

I try download again.

I can play 2 hours game freeze.

Kill with taskmanager.

Its better but freeze Issue still exist.

Revert again to 1.193

For me it freezes on both on the 194 and the 193. but since the 193 runs smoother/faster ill use it for the time being.

Hello everyone with AMD CPUs also having this problem.

I understand that the devs were unable to reproduce this problem on their AMD builds. I tried to reason out why, so I focused on the logic of local appdata files on the user's end that the devs would probably regularly rebuild, and I think I found a solution:

Please try deleting your Space Engineers Shader Cache folder, it's in:

\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\ShaderCache2

For reference, my game also ran fine in 1.193 but began the stuttering problem without bottlenecking CPU, GPU, and RAM during the Open Beta and when 1.194 went live. My specs:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core Processor

NVIDIA GeForce 1660 SUPER

16GB RAM

If you are sure that you are experiencing the AMD Ryzen CPU problem, please let me know if deleting shader cache2 folder works for you.

Thanks,

- Kamu

Thx.

It help for an hour or so.

Then it starts again

Have to try this, Also started to get these freezes after last update. I've been using second desktop to wait until freeze stops as I can't really use the one which runs the game. Other thing I noticed with this is that 1 of my CPU threads is stuck over 90% usage during this whilst all the others stays 5-10%

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core. Geforce RTX 2070, 16 GB Ram

photo

Didn't help

photo
1

Then theres just one last thing to rule out of the performence handbook: the gpu. It would seem that, of all the stuttering that ive seen on these threads, all of them had nvidia graphics cards. I dont see how its related to the problem but it might be the only hardware based link between the issues.

photo
1

Update: Found a thread containing user with AMD GPU therefore this cannot be a hardware-related issue. Atleast not when it comes to GPU or CPU as it would seem.

photo
1

Another thing that i have mentioned is the lod / disappearing texture issues which seem to persists, although in a very specific way. It only occurs once a save is reloaded or a second world is loaded, meaning the issue will not come forth on the first start.

Edit: Scratch that. The LOD issue appears on first start too and comes after a large lagspike.

photo
1

Weirdly I am experiencing freezes again, I have cleaned the shader cache but had no time to test it again. I Will report here as I'm able to, I'm afraid the issue is related to that. I guess I should check how memory behaves when it happens, it can be that it's using swap memory (I mean SSD simulating ram) that is slowing down thing, if that'd be the case then it can eventually be a problem with garbage collection or a memory leak (not deallocating what is not needed anymore)

photo
1

i havent gotten a freeze since, but the LOD issue appears to be a one-off and chances are the freeze can come back on that particular rig. Having said that however, i havent figured out what the freeze can be, or what triggers it.

photo
1

Game freeze is still there, looks like drills are causing the problem: my rig has a dozen of rotating drills, when I turn them off it gets better.

Hi ever since that Frost update 1.194 been having freezing problems telling me to reduce my graphics so I have gone from custom to low and still same problem ran great before that update. As a matter of fact I had just built this computer to run Space Engineers spent over $4K Canadian on it. Crosshair VIII Formula motherboard, AMD 3900X CPU, 2 x M2 1Tb each, a Nvidia MSI GTX1650 GameX GPU with 4Gb DDR5, and 128Gb DDR4 Ram, so performance is not on my end. Can I uninstall that last update and get back to playing. All I had running was your survival earth like planet no mods or anything else loaded (New Game), and was building and grinding down stuff to unlock other blocks. As I said I was happily building etc, before the update no errors nothing on Custom max settings, now I can just stand there and every 5 mins or so freeze.

photo
1

Have you noticed when that happens more often? Like getting closer to your base or vehicle, or it's just on a timely basis, or anything you may have noticed?

photo
1

I am standing on the base with a small cargo container behind me and building and grinding down components to unlock other components in the progression mode. I even restarted the mission so no extra ship trucks or anything just the start. It is the stock “Earth like planet” in survivor mode the one that has the drone mining base 5Kilometers away with a Drone HQ 30Kilometers away in the other direction. As I said it played perfectly before 1.194 version in custom ultra everything. Now even in the lowest settings it freezes after about 5-10 minutes or even freezes when loading the game the Space Engineers flying to build the Keen symbol. After that it is variable 2-5 minutes it freezes. Doug

Ok, hopefully describing when that happens will help the support to expedite the eventual fix.

Also, for everyone reading, share this post in order to have more thumbs up, it will prioritize it in their queue (afaik).

photo

It would seem that even the more poweful computers lag despite setting the graphics to minimum. This combined with other performence related issues boils down to the game's optimization, or rather the lack thereof. The only that doesnt make sense is why only in the new 1.194 version and not previous ones. Im sure stuttering and lag was present then but now it has a much larger impact on gameplay and it worsened in severity.

photo
1

Another related bug report, it's describing the same behaviour I've noticed:

https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/general/topic/becomes-unresponsive-occurs-quicker-each-time

photo
1

Ill move over some discussing material there as this thread seems to focus more on the performence loss aspect rather than the thread locking. From my experience atelast, the 194 version simply takes too long to load certain things, or has trouble re-loading others (for whatever reason), and such, is slower than previous versions.

photo

Yes up until they upgraded a year ago to DX12 I was running an Asus A8N-SLI with 4Gb DDR1 ram and a GTS650 video card with an Optron CPU. I was chugging along quite happily then the DX12 and I couldn’t play for over a year, until I built my new scream machine, so I can play Space Engineers and Flight SIM. It was working absolutely fabulous in custom graphic mode ultra everything then this 1.194 Frostbite and bang Freezing issues. No pun intended. All graphics are on low now and still freezing. I do hope this gets resolved, Space Engineers is my go to when I just want to unwind and build stuff, and not get frustrated in Myst type games or blown out of the sky in some SCII type games.

photo

I've found out that also a Space Engineers YouTuber is experiencing this problem:

https://youtu.be/9UaukNpofm4?t=1966

I hope his comment is added here or in any of the related topics here.

I'm sure the more input keen receives the easier it would be for them to solve it.

Same here, deleted shadercache and didn't work. Have to restart to fix it for a couple of minutes and the it begins again.

Specs:

Windows 10

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (no OC)

Radeon RX 480 8gb VRam (no OC)

8 gb RAM (2x4gb) @ 2666 mhz

I've noticed:

My sim speed drops to 0.6 and goes up to 1.0 every 2 o 3 sec. (it always jumps to 0.6, no 0.5 or 0.7)

My cpu thread for game goes from 40-75% to 115%+ at the same time

Cpu thread for internal server the same from 40-75% to 115%+

The spikes are at the same rate, constant.

Tried:

Changing resolution from to 1920x1080 to 1280x720.

Changing Graphics settings from high to low and different settings on/off (AA, etc)

With/WO mods.

Fullscreen , windowed.

Hope it helps.

I don't know if this can help anyone on the dev team... but after some faulty windows 10 updates I decided to fully migrate to linux... for my surprise after installing SE on linux the game started working without this bug, it works even better than it worked on windows, less cpu usage, less ram used, faster loading times, no stuttering.

For reference I also submitted a review in protondb (Renxo):

Same, except it occurs much more frequently and especially when loading blueprints and inventory menues. CPU usage skyrockets and the game even freezes for short periods during this. And unlike most other users i have an Intel I6-6700HQ quad core.

photo

yes i have the same issue ever since the last update and ive tries deleteing the shader catch and even the entire %appdata% file and ive reinstalled 3 times this week but the proble4m persist game freezes frequently and nothing seems yo work and for all the things ive tried it has to be a game related problem this time not hardware today im going to roll back to a older update to see if that works untill this issue gets fixed the game is unplayable as of now with this update. Im dissapointed cuz the update with frostbyte looked so cool i was even thinking of purchaseing the frostbyt dlc but not now after this they messed this one up good. ill have to wait who nows how long now hopefully a fix will be available soon.

my specs are

ryzen 7 3700x

red devil 5700xt

ram 16 g 3200 mhz

mb gig. elite wifi x570

Can confirm the same issue (Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM, nvidia 1050ti). Very irritating in multiplayer mode as other players lose connection. Mostly just freezes; occasionally these freezes extend into full crashes.

There is a steam thread suggesting replacing the VRage.Library.dll improves the situation: https://steamcommunity.com/app/244850/discussions/0/2259060348500655858/?ctp=3 - although perhaps not with the latest modtools?

photo
1

The suggested solution seems to be working.

I've downloaded the SDK few hours ago and will report if I still get stutters, but so far none.

photo
1

Still getting stutters, maybe there's a little improvement.

I'll, hopefully, be able to buy additional RAM, I know that 8GB are not enough..

I still wonder why I did not get stutters with 1.193 tho.

photo
2

this update is far more broken than anyone anticipated, and this issue is just icing on the cake. There are frequent crashes and bugs that were otherwise not present in prior versions. My guess is that keen rewrote some part of the game in hopes that it would improve gameplay but rather the opposite happened.

photo
1

Any update on this?

getting this constantly on my new system

Ryzen 3900x

X570

32GB ram

SSD

980ti

freezes in vanilla, no mods. all the drivers are up to date etc

photo

I also have this same issue. I posted this on space engineers Reddit:

Hi all, I need help, advice on why my game after maybe 5 to 7 minutes of playing just freezes for no reason. I have uninstalled the game entirely and reinstalled twice now with no clue. I have played with no mods, the same happens.

My hardware layout if this helps:

Machine Micro-Star International Co., Ltd - MS-7C02

Operating System Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bit)

Memory 32 GB

Processor AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core Processor

Motherboard Micro-Star International Co., Ltd - B450 TOMAHAWK MAX (MS-7C02)

Video Cards NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER

Monitors KB272HL

Hard Disk ST2000DM001-1ER164 (2.0 TB)

Network Card Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller

I was stuttering and freezing a lot before frostbite update which i love, But now when I check the task manager it says not responding.

Please do fix this as my son and I do play this coop when we don't get aggravated.

Hello, everyone!

This issue should be fixed, can you please confirm?

Thank you!

It's not fixed. I still get regular freezes wherein animations still play, but I'm stuck for anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. I've done every imaginable fix and workaround, including using the SDK vrage replacement from a version of the SDK that's over 6 months old. I never froze when I played space engineers until I started playing again recently, and my hardware and drivers are all up to date. Fresh install of windows, stable connection, etc, and it's still happening. I'm 99% sure it's related to SE.

Hello Chris,

Thank you for your information. Could you please provide us with your logs when you experienced the freezes?

Thank you.

I'm also having trouble with this,

The stuttering seems directly related to the sim speed. Even on brand new survival games still a stutter every 3 seconds.

Hello Phillip!

Thank you for your information. Could you please attach here your logs too? Do you play with any mods?

Thank you.

I don't play with any mods. I did a fresh install and games are brand new. It affects all game types.

I don't know what log files you want

Hello, Engineers!

It´s already quite long time from when this issue was originally posted as well as from the last comment.

Are you still experiencing it? Or was it fixed in the meantime.

Thanks in advance for confirming me current situation.
