PvP gamebreaking glitch for griefing using unbuilt blocks

Udrakan Morturim shared this bug 5 years ago
Solved

Im reporting a very ancient bug where a griefer can use bunch of steel plates to do massive damage to bases both in space and on planet surface.

Griefer takes several steel plates, flies above the base beyond turret range and drops unbuilt artificial masses. They have full mass upon being placed, light blocks do nothing when dropped. They are not targetted by turrets with any settings and upon impact deal massive damage to the base. Griefer can also stand on the roof and place the artifical mass above his head, smashing through the ceiling and several floors.

In space, griefer accelerates with his jetpack to max speed and places the artifical mass block. Same result as on planets. I have a save file where tester has to just press a left mouse button, but I can't upload it into files here, so I recorded a gif instead.

This sort of attack requires no engineering whatsoever, just a few steel plates, and should not be possible.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Create an Easy Start Earth survival world

2) Take steel plates into your inventory

3) Fly directly above your (or any other) base

4) Place Artificial mass block directly below you

You might have to spend 20min unlocking it. That hasn't stopped any of the griefers I saw at test#3 though.

I've been griefed by this too, there's literally nothing you can do about it.

dropping gyroscopes is easier, and less to unlock

Right. So they CAN start doing it very early on.

It is surprising how this problem will be solved ? Players are waiting for an answer.

Space engineers destruction from light and heavy armor blocks.

We can clearly see what is happening with the spacecraft, which is attacked by blocks of light and heavy armor. The problem is as old and yet the solution of it we can't see. Of course you need to rely on the honesty of players. But as practice says, an undercooked block of armor is not perceived as an object of attack, from the side of the protective turrets of the ship or base. It is not made (not welded) that is not subject to destruction. It's funny that a small cube of one plate can destroy a heavy cruiser.

It happened to me 3 times, it's really annoying and takes away so much fun from the game, I even captured one of these guys on video when he nuked my rover on Earth-like by throwing blocks at it, I really hope you will do something about it soon, today, on the Public Test EU#3 4 guys anihiliated my base by throwing blocks like rotors and artifical masses.

TL;DR- correct the mass of blocks that don't have any components added to them yet- I estimate about ~ 10 minutes work to check all blocks quickly and then update them accordingly. Only been 6 years so far, no rush....

photo
2

That's not how game development works. Just checking is far from what you need to do

photo
1

How else would they find out which blocks have the incorrect mass values, without checking them ( no one said 'just checking' )? Turns out you can't actually see how heavy a block is just by holding a welder to it though, so they'd have to manually look at each blocks file and check the mass of the unwelded state and correct it, assuming they know how heavy it was supposed to be in that state.

photo
2

The game uses constant mass for each block regardless of its state.

There's no such thing as "mass of the unwelded state"

You can't just magically correct something. In order to do anything about that, someone will have to implement a whole new dynamic mass system

photo
3

Well shit- that ties in with what Nikolas said too- I wasn't aware that the mass of every block was fixed at whatever value Keen decided on regardless of build state, I think we all foolishly assumed that mass increased with components added, since components themselves have a known mass, so why the hell wouldn't it increase/decrease.

GG once again Keen...

1. Unfinished block mass should have the mass of included components only, not the finished block mass.

2. This issue reminds me this: When Planets first introduced, jetpack fuel was enough only for 6 seconds of flight in planetary gravity. It was great so that players had to build scaffolding a lot, ship building hangars..etc. Without a long jetpack flight time this issue wouldn't be a big problem at all.

photo
2

I wouldn't want to go back to only having a few seconds of flight time, it just makes building on planets unbearably difficult- a better solution would be limiting how high you can fly with just a jet pack, similar to how Atmo thrusters can only function up to a certain altitude based on the mass of the ship they are on + how many there are.

Or, they could just correct the incorrect block mass and the whole issue disappears...

photo
1

actually they are all like that

they all have the full mass, regardless of build state and components that have been added

photo
2

I personally am for having the weight of the block porportional to the percentage of the component added to it.

I am also for having and option to tell turrets to shoot at any block of an unowned grid with extreme prejudice.

photo

I've seen this as well, would be awesome if this can be fixed

Go find another game you carebears.

photo
2

wtf, no, if some ass wants to throw a heavy block at someone elses ship/base, they should have to add all those heavy components to the block and weld it for that mass and block health to count towards any damage!

only a griefer would want it left as it is!

photo
1

If i find your base its already over, dont think i need to through armor blocks at it.

photo

Throw*

You're missing the point completely- simply dropping unwelded blocks onto a base ( or ship ) shouldn't cause that much damage, it shouldn't cause any. Add to that the fact that turrets won't target unpowered lumps of armour and you have a game-breaking method of griefing other players; if you destroy a base by attacking it via conventional means then that's fair & square and doesn't exploit a broken game mechanic ( ergo, unwelded blocks would have very little mass, not full mass ).

Insulting people won't change the facts.

Just ignore the trolling kid

Do you play on a pvp server?

Basically instead of adressing the subject, he tried to use this thread to show how much of a badass predator he is compared to us, the prey, without realizing that Space Engineers doesn't exactly draw in the crowd of people who are afraid of "I'm lv60 navy space seal, do you even PvP bro".

photo

Ah so PVE only then.

As Cpt_Forgotten said, just ignore Logan. His comments are pointless, we are supposed to use this comment section to discuss bug reports and feedback and not get ourselves baited into this mess, I keep getting notifications that a new comment appeared in this bug report, and instead of interesting ideas, comments confirming that this is a common problem and eventually a response from KEEN itself I get notified of this...

BUMP- why are modders having to do the work of the developers? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1855352867

This an extremely serious issue which basically breaks PVP even more so then your shield add on. It needs urgent fixing.

hey thats so great , now i have a use for the artificial mass blocks since you cannot use them for gravitydrive anymore :)

photo

gravity drive still works

Still a big issue. Proposed solution: If an incomplete block collides with a complete block, the incomplete block is destroyed and deals no damage.

photo

how has this not been fixed

photo

No money in it. Tell them you'll buy it as a DLC, it'll be fixed in a month. (complete with a wide array of new and interesting bugs you paid for!)

Hello, everyone!

We have reproduced this issue in another ticket: https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/blast-bombing and we will address it as soon as possible. Thank you.

Why would you mark this as duplicate when it's older than that other thread

photo

A thread that

-is older

-has gif of the situation

-includes additional info about turret targetting

is a dupe of that other thread, ok, whatever

Hello, Engineers!

I´m happy to inform you that this issue will be fixed in upcoming game update v200.
