Hello H.M.,

Thank you for reaching our forum with this problem.

Could you please specify what exactly is happening? You mentioned that the game is crashing - does this occur when loading into the game, or when exiting?

Where exactly does this problem occur? Are you able to launch the game at all, and does it start properly for you?

Does the crashing happen only in one specific world, or in multiple (or all) worlds?

Are you playing in single player, or in a multiplayer mode (Lobby, dedicated server, official server)?

Can you identify any particular point at which the game always crashes, or does it seem to happen randomly?

Are there any mods active in the affected world(s)? If yes, does the same problem also occur in a freshly started vanilla (no mods) world?

Please first try our general workarounds that help most of the players to solve most of the problems. These are:

  • Verify your game files in Steam - right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (it means your game configuration will be deleted) - you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder - same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

If nothing from this list would help you, and you would still experience the crashes, please provide us further details and also a log from any of the affected game sessions.

You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

press launch, click, little rectangle picture turns white and a windows box saying program isn't responding pops up asking to close and report to Microsoft or wait. when in a game world clicking save and exit to menu or desktop and clicking causes the same thing or a little grey box in the top corner saying processes isn't responding asking to kill or cancel. no mods. I only see shadercache2 and it's empty. when I changed the settings to how I like them and clicked apply and clicked it froze and the centered windows box asking to wait or exit showed up again so I clicked exit again. I updated my OS and relaunched the game. it was laggy at around 47-50fps but my system resorses where well under max. I changed 3 options from photo quality to high and the top left grey box showed again and I clicked kill process again but it did not register and the game eventually got back to normal besides a red warning that said performance issues and reoccurs every so often. Again all resorses vram, cpu, memory, GPU all under max and fps back to 60. it worked until I launched it again today.

Hello Engineer,

Thank you for your detailed description.

From what you wrote, it seems the game client is temporarily freezing when loading, exiting, or applying new settings. This is why you see the Windows “program isn’t responding” dialog or the in-game “process isn’t responding” message. Since the game recovers afterward, this usually means the simulation or rendering thread is stalling for a few seconds rather than crashing completely.

Can you please confirm if you already tried the recommended steps mentioned earlier? This will help us narrow down whether the issue is linked to your system, settings, or world data.

Please also note that the Photo Quality setting is not intended for general gameplay. It is primarily meant for taking high-quality screenshots, and applying it can cause significant stuttering or temporary freezes. We recommend lowering your graphics details overall to High or Medium and checking whether this improves stability.

Looking at the log you shared, it seems to end abruptly without a clean error or exception. This indicates the game did not exit properly, but we cannot see the exact reason from the log itself. To help us connect the log with your actions, could you please share another log file from a session where the freeze occurs, and specify the steps you performed during that session (for example: launched game → changed settings → applied → froze → recovered → played → saved → exited game)?

To recap, could you please provide us with the following information:

  • Does this happen in every world, or only in a particular save?
  • Does it also occur in a freshly created vanilla world (no mods)?
  • Did this begin right after you updated your operating system, or were you experiencing the same behavior before?
  • Is the problem still happening, after you lower game details?
  • The most recent log file from a session where the freeze happened.
  • A description of the exact steps you took in that session so we can line them up with the log.

This additional information will help us investigate further.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,
