Blocks in a grid should be able to belong to more than one group.

Currently the system lets you assign several blocks to a single group. The way it's done in SE2 is a step backwards from SE1. I can in SE1 assign a block to multiple different groups, usually for multiple purposes. I can also add new/replacement blocks to an existing group without having to split up the existing group and recreating it.

Simply put, don't discard proven SE1 behaviors just in the name of 'being different'. Many of these interfaces are familiar and easy and useful, and there's no reason to go radically reinvent the wheel when the wheel works.

Definitely need this, assigning multiple groups to a single block is quite helpful when managing mass-grid-production or changing between flight-configurations.

Agreed. Put 3 pistons after each other then a drill. You cannot group the pistons together because they are in automatically defined different subgrids. In SE1 you could group these and control them all from the same EC.

Looking at the current hierarchy system in the Terminal, I don't see how it can be possible without remaking the whole system from scratch. And the same hierarchy view is used not only to organise blocks but for GPS points and whatnot. It is very unlikely they are going to change this approach at this point.
What we can already do is to group blocks inside timers and event controllers, by selecting many blocks and applying the same action on them. Of course, it is rather tedious to create the same action multiple times or even worse, constantly tweaking those actions when you are still setting things up and need to play a bit with values.
There can be special grouping mechanism integrated with action slots so you can select multiple blocks for an action, or...
..Having a new physical "group" block.
