Unable to join some servers - since 1.197.180

Chris shared this bug 3 years ago
Solved

Since the most recent hotfix 1.197.180 clients are unable to join servers with don't send the "rules" section in the steam server query.

It appears that the number of mods and block limits can cause this issue to occur. I have also heard an error in the SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg can cause the issue as well. There doesn't seem to be one specific issue that causes the rules not to be sent, this can cause a lot of time being spent rectifying the issue through trial and error.

From Decompiling the game's code the main JoinGame method in "Sandbox.Game.Gui.MyJoinGameHelper" will not attempt to connect people to servers if the rules are null. Previously on PC, players have been able to join servers missing rules without issue, as this information got downloaded directly from the server when joining, this change has effectively introduced a cap on how many mods and block limits we can have.

I have included an empty world with settings that will cause no rules to be sent. Removing either all the block limits or all the mods for this world will allow clients to join. Hopefully, this can be used to fix the issue.

Hello!

Thank you all for your feedback. We identified and addressed the problem, it affected modded servers and the issue here was between Steam and the game. The fix is already available, we will release a version for both platforms during tomorrow as part of version 197.181.

Thank you!

Noticed the same issue here, spent a whole day trial and error removing mods thinking one was broken but not causing a error.

Was a very frustrating day.

Having identical issue to the one posted by Qrahn.

Yup. This is a thing now. Would love to see a fix!

Any chance of an update anytime soon Keen? at least publicly acknowledge your hotfix had some major issues/you're working on a fix? please.

I have the same exact issue posted by Qrahn. I can connect while using mobile data but even though I reset the router( hard and soft) change the ıp, used a vpn, can not connect with cable connection.

Bonjour,

I have the same problem as Qrahn...

Good luck

i have setup a few worlds to use in Lan playrounds on my own pc over the dedicated server manager and even the vanilla ones arent reachable anymore since the 1.197.180 update.

i even tried rolling game and server a few versions back doesnt seam to help. also only saying new world and choosing any of the worlds and directly saying save&start without changing any settigns doesnt create a world where iam able to join.

not to mention that since the update the options menu game is bigger than the hud is able to manage . . .

I have the same issue, every time its a different mod. This is really getting annoying, since patch nobody from my community can join the server. This needs to get resolved ASAP.

It's got ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with your mods - Keen somehow broke something with their damn hotfix and until they unfuck it with another hotfix we won't be able to play - I've managed to get 81 out of my 205 total mods to allow me to still join my server and all but no matter what if I add any other mod at all the button basically breaks and appears to do nothing with no error message - my guess is that there is some max mod size limit for the xbox mod.io link or whatever they turned back on and for some reason that limit is being applied globally to the PC settings as well and fucking any of us with more than a moderately modded server :P - at least that's my theory anyway - we just need Keen to fix it and soon - I haven't been able to play on the server I am paying money for since Thursday fml :P

photo
2

How has Keen not responded to this in any way?!? We are on day 4 of trying to do their work for them. Let us opt out with playing with xbox, who cares!

photo
1

Lol I opted out of Xbox after the shitshow that was them releasing on Xbox without dedicated servers supported - I got a couple new friends on, playing on my xbox one X and we didn't even get one tiny rover, one tiny flying ship, and started a tiny miner along with not even a medium-sized base and the game was out of usable memory, kicked everyone but me and my framerate was so shit that I was basically frozen :P - I know it's gotten a LOT better and they've reduced the max number of players to help with some of that but still - no thanks - besides I can't have most of my mods or scripts on there and it took them like a full year to even get around to adding mod support to some level then they had to remove it for another month or so and then when the re-added it they somehow broke the PC modded servers fml :P

photo
3

Is there even a way for us to force not to use Mod.io or opt out? This is pretty fucked. Its so bad right now that it just makes me wanna quit space engineers fully.

photo
2

I personally could care less about mod.io or not - I just wanna be able to play modded on my PC lol :P

photo
2

you and me both, its been 4 days and nothing, my community keeps asking me when can we play. We spend tons of hours on this save just to get it yoinked away from us cause of a stupid update.

photo
1

YAY - they've finally switched to investigating :D *grumbles* only took them four days but better late than never - could have been far longer :P - hopefully that'll change to putting out a fix soon lol :P

Where do you see that?

The email notifying me this thread had gone to investigating or the thing up at the top that used to say submitted but now shows as investigating :P

Hallelujia - has been a very boring week without SE - can't wait to finally be able to rejoin my server :P Thanks for getting it fixed :)

Well never ******* mind - STILL can't play - have been spending ALL day - and I know I play with an INSANE number of mods but I've removed OVER 50-60+ - still working on removing more - but no matter what I do I can't get ANY of my old worlds that before last weeks' hotfix that mucked this all up in the first place - literally was working, joining and playing JUST fine last Wednesday night - can't even start to join any old backup copies, my main save, or any other older modded worlds. I can however make a new world, join, have maybe some of the mods actually seeming to work in game/function, and then as soon as I leave and try to join it takes me right back to where I've been for a week with a minor change - at least now for a split partial second the little joining world and spinning wheel box pop up only to IMMEDIATELY disappear and seem to act like you never clicked on anything - makes the sound when you click/hit enter on the continue/join option and trying to use the direct connect basically just seems to time out. And once I leave the BRAND new word and try to rejoin it does the same thing again. THis HAS to be a game side issue because my server shows as running PERFECTLY fine and ServerBlend support seems to think that everything they are seeing is perfectly fine - the only thing they've mentioned are a couple errors being thrown by mods but those mods have NOTHING wrong, no one is reporting any issues with them at all, and again, just like my world as a whole, was working perfectly just over a week ago - I'm not sure what else I can do since I've literally knocked my mod list down by a QUARTER of the total list size and I'm hoping to ultimately get it down to about half of what it was but when it's not even just failing to join or crashing or something because it never actually starts trying to join I don't see how that's a server issue - it seems like that has to be the exact same steam and game failing to communicate with the server as this whole last week no?

This fix did not fix the issue.

the server shows in steams serverlist but i cant reach him from ingame to be more precise or call the joining process via the steam serverlist.

also the tries to join arent showing in the serverconsole as tries to join.

the server is managed via the keen servrmanager and is inside a lan system and i already have the 416byte update, steam downloaded it at 12:13 german time, game and serverversion shows 1.197.181

edit:

tried now with a fresh unmodded and a fresh modded world that where never in contact with any previous verison of se, same result: server shows in steam serverlist but not ingame and can be reached via direct connect and the joining over the steam serverlist doesnt call a joining process.

Hello, Abisius,

I'm sorry that you are experiencing that issue. The fix here solved the original issue clients were unable to join servers that didn't send any "rules" (mod names, blocks limits). Could you please create a new ticket for your problem? We would appreciate an example save where you're experiencing described issue. We will investigate it.

Thank you.

This fix is still broken for everyone on my dedicated server. Lots of people are having this exact issue.

If you can't fix this bug, could we revert the change to the pre-180 code, which worked?

It’s not fixed, same thing is still happening. You broke your game. Weeks of effort destroyed.

As my earlier comment above shows - after spending literally 6-8 hours today mucking about with mods and paring down my list and starting new worlds and more - the ONLY way I can even join my server is to start a new world - then like half my mods - especially any HUD/GUI/skybox, minimap/RADAR, a lot of QoL mods, etc all don't seem to be even in the world or at least aren't functioning/visibly there and I didn't even get so far as to look and check the g menu but I'd wager many or even none were showing up and as soon as I left the game and tried to rejoin it went right back to the same broken button we've had for a week now. And I've even knocked off a quarter and change of all my mods - no change at all save for going from not able to even join a new world/having to restart the server 3 or 4 times to get it running to being able to start it without any issues and joining a new world once but it basically being vanilla SE and then never able to rejoin which doesn't help at all :P fml - yay tech and broken games - not.

Hello!

I'm deeply sorry that released hotfix didn't solve the issue for you. :( I'm reopening this ticket. We managed to reproduce this issue using a save provided by Abisius and reported it to our programmers. Matthew, if you would also like to provide us with your save, we would appreciate it.

I mean, literally ANY of my old saves (which had 170-210 or more mods) and was working just fine - NONE when loaded up onto the server allow any kind of joining at all - though granted before the hotfix this week I didn't even get an initial brief flash of the joining server popup box - now I get that for a split second before it goes right back to the menu. I can provide the files for any of my last couple main back ups, but it also breaks brand new worlds in that I can join once and then if I quit to menu, goes right back to not working - and at the moment I am down to 149 mods and at least one or two make the server add 2 more for a total of 151 (which I understand is a LOT - it's just that it was working fine with far more mods - and the most I've even managed to get it to run with - and again, literally did no more testing than making sure I could connect once - and only then to a brand new world - I assume if I went back to what had been working before I'd find it had the same issues of only being able to join once - not trying to come across as a jerk or anything - just frustrated by the sheer amount of time I've spent trying to do anything and everything I can to make it work on my end - and the poor staff at ServerBlend who've been trying to help are just as confused as me as to why it's not allowing anyone to join - just miss playing this amazing game that I have a ridiculous over 18,000 hours of playing and wanna be able to play again with my friends :P I know y'all are doing what y'all can to fix it - just sucks not being able to play the game in over a week - mods have kinda broken vanilla SE for me - there's just so many QoL things and blocks that I've gotten so used to using that without them I just get bored real quick :P

I'll go ahead and attach a couple world saves and if a mod list - and like I said it lets me join a brand new world ONCE - but any mods like BuildInfo, BuildVision, the 3dHud and reflective helmet mod, the minimap/radar, the hud compass, and who knows what else do not appear - at least visually - to be working at all - and I never even got so far as to check and see if any of the modded blocks were even showing up in the g (build) menu figured I'd try reloaded and see if that fixed anything and then couldn't re-join - figured there's still some issue between the game/steam's servers and the server itself - even though it shows as online and working in the steam servers and my control panel shows and the performance monito indicate the game is indeed running on the server - just won't let me join - and since it seems to be the same issue as before - though again I can't imagine what changed that I get to see the flash of the joining thing before it goes away vs not having seen even that for the last week - just hope you all can find a fix soon - ID numbers only, or with names, etc would be at all helpful let me know - I have .txt notepad and word .doc versions of both and even might have a fully fleshed out spreadsheet by the end of this all so I can keep track of and easily add/remove mods from a modlist I keep current lol

photo

I am having the same issue on my dedicated servers. I was able to make a brand new server to eliminate the possibility that it might be a problem with my saves HOWEVER I was able to reach 100 Mods without a problem and as soon as I reach 101 mods the server becomes NOT JOINABLE from the list and the server does NOT appear on favorites or history tab. this HAS TO BE FIXED ASAP PLEASE!!!!!! this has practically destroyed many existing servers that had no issues and were working fine before the last update. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! get this fixed!

You Hotfix did NOT fix the issue, it is still BROKEN!

Not sure if this is related at all - but having gotten my mod list low enough I could join again - 104 out of 206 - now after not even a week our server is having a memory leak issue or something - our main grid - an asteroid base - built into/onto/off of the asteroid just barely in the gravity well - 0.05g - has just decided to start slowly phasing through the asteroid's voxels it's built off of/around/into and reverting to a backup prior to it results in the same thing happening anywhere from 5-20+ minutes after reloading the backup and restarting the server - haven't ever had this issue before myself - and am seeing more and more reports/questions/comments about such happening - even a couple reddit posts, etc - one as recently as within the last 3-5 days - can link you to that if needed and can also share my world file if the devs need it - but from a couple posts it appears that this new memory leak issue came about either out of either the hotfix for the hotfix - the March 3rd one - or the previous weeks' hotfix to re-enable mod.io connectivityand xbox crossplay - again, I've NO clue if it's related but it is a new issue that I've never had on my server with a static grid embedded at least partially - sturts/corners/partial blocks here and there to "support" the station - phasing through voxles - I've had the occassional piston/landing gears/etc kinda doing such with other grids but never a grid in its' entirety before this last couple hotfixes so figured it wouldn't hurt to toss that out and ask - and this is coming from someone with over 18,000 hours in SE - and that is not a typo lol - I know I've been griping a LOT lately - but it's only cause I love this game and it's a great way to relax and destress after the day - for me at least - and I just keep having more and more as of the xbox crossplay/mod.io stuff hotfix and even more since - didn't even manage a full week only had one planetary base, one asteroid base, and one station, and less than 10 total ships - wasn't a super complex world really - according to a friend it appears the grid is somehow becoming dynamic and there's a MASSIVE lag spike - lasts a solid couple seconds at least - more than I've usually ever seen - hopefully there can be a fix for the mod issue, and this new one as well - really getting tired of having to start a new world every week or two as of the last month and change just to be able to enjoy the game/not have my shit falling through solid rock/voxels :P

photo

Been two whole weeks and a day since the last time I commented? any ideas, hints, thoughts at all on when we're getting a fix for this? It's been like a whole month and change+ since the original hotfix that broke this and a week less that since the hotfix to fix the hotfix that didn't fix anything - would be nice just to let us all know that this is still being worked on or that you've got a fix but are holding it out till this coming thursday or next whichever week y'all are dropping the Warfare 1 DLC and all - just kinda frustrating it having been over a MONTH and no one's even checking in to let us know any info or guesstimate of when we might begin to hope for a fix or anything - I get you all have other things and all and not just this but like there's at least a couple dozen of us that like heavily modding our games/servers and can't run with any more than about a hundred give or take at most.

photo
2

Wait this isn’t fixed yet???

Yes I gave up on space engineers and gave up on testing.

But I still get notifications if something new happens but seeing you still message about this I doubt they gonna fix it by now lol, this is just depressing to see and all I want to do is finish my ship in survival xD

So for now thanks for reminding me!

photo

The so-called 'hot-fix' the week after it happened didn't fix anything - well mostly - I was able to go from a max of only 65-85ish mods to about a hundred and change but anything at all past that - joining option still isn't working :P - as soon as I reduce the mod list down to under that cutoff - which I don't know exactly where it is but it's somewhere between 108 and 125 or so for me now - and had been at 85 or 86, maybe 87 I think before that 'fix' - still missing a ton of mods I love to have and use :P (most of my mods are tiny things, small packs, some decorative ones, and things like QoL, lcd image packs, etc that just add numbers to mod list but not so much file size :P - and last time I'd checked we haven't had a hotfix since the hotfix to fix what the first one broke and that didn't actually solve the issue and has actually made others even - managed to get the game working with half my mods only to have the asteroid base I'd started building in the new world literally phase through the damn asteroid due to some kind of memory leak or something that I'd never had or seen before - I'm assuming they will fix it since the status still shows as actively waiting a fix but if the new dlc doesn't drop until the end of the month they'll be at almost 2 months since they broke the damn game and I want a fix sooner rather than later - ideally a few weeks back lol :P - my servers' working as is for now - but I want my mods back :P

photo

And I'm gonna keep on them till they either f***ing fix it or come out right and tell me they aren't going to :P

I had our mods drastically reduced, and then it worked and we could get on the server.

Now it is 1.198.024

Same save, nobody can join the server any more. No chance. Identical issue.

Mod reduction is near a point where I cannot just fucking take out a lot without fucking breaking shit in out world.

Sorry but i am pissed. Waited forever, monthly paid server, now update, and shit does not even stay the same but gets worse.

What the hell.

im getting the same thing only a bit diffrent im the only one not able to join our server and im a admin ,i hit join and nothing happened and while watching teh server logs it shows other players connecting all this scinse todays update

Can we get some super basic, rough guesstimate of when they might finally have a fix? It's been over a month since the devs introduced this bug and every freaking update/hotfix they've put out to address it only makes it worse - I went from over 200 mods (which I know is a LOT) to just over 100 - less than 110, and now with warfare 1 had to cut to under 100 and don't know what else I can really cut without starting to muck up builds and grids or my world on my server. We don't need a concrete set in stone legally binding exact timestamp but just a rough guess - next week, warfare 2, somewhere in between, etc - like its been more than a month - do we have to wait till the end of June when warfare 2 is likely to drop, somewhere in between? longer?

photo
2

I doubt this is going to happen, it’s been a fucking 30+ days. I’ve giving up on this. I have a pre rented server that literally doing nothing at the moment cause I can’t play my damn save. So I’m losing money thanks to keen team. I’m done caring for this bullshit. Seriously what made them decide how many mods are good enough for my damn server. Who the hell do they think they are xD

Anyways it’s a sinking boat on this topic. Wish you all well fellow engineers o7

In response to you - KSH - marking the other bug thread for this EXACT issue as solved I'm just gonna repost my comment there here - not that I am even sure anyone is reading this thread as long as it's been since we've gotten any actual official reply on here.

Well just spent ages re-adding in all my mods to my server and what do you know - STILL can't join the damn game - I don't have that many mod dependencies and actually have most included WITH my modlist to make sure that isn't an issue - the game was working PERFECTLY fine before the xbox hotfix that broke all this mess - still having the SAME damn issue - starting to get really REALLY tired of this shit - I've been playing with 1-200+ mods for YEARS in this game on dedicated servers and this is the first time that I can't play with that many - I'd pared it down to just 93 mods or so and that works just fine but when I re-add everything else to just over 200 mods the rejoin/continue button is AGAIN not working - click on it repeated and NOTHING at all happens - the server itself is running absolutely fine - I just cannot connect to it - idk what y'all did but it's clearly some issue between the game itself and Steam services/servers or something because the support team and all indications in my control panel for my server show it is running perfectly normally - can you PLEASE fix your shit already KSH?! it's been over 50 fucking days and I've lost my patience - this is now the at least 2nd hotfix I'm aware of that was supposed to fix this and it still hasn't - ffs - you can't claim your hotfix fixes something and then not have that something be fixed lol

I'm gonna test around some I guess since I've wasted most of the day getting that done and all only for it to fail again and see if I can at least get more than 100 mods loaded as my cut off between the button working and me being able to join and not was somewhere in the 93 to 112 range and I've heard at least several different numbers that people have found so it's clearly NOT anything to do with the actual number.

I have NO idea what your actual source code looks like or what y'all did in the first place to break this but I'm just gonna ask - is there any hard limit that the Xbox code puts on the Xbox version for stability's sake or something as far as mods go that might've somehow been made a constant or applied to all versions incorrectly? cause it makes NO sense to me at all that somehow turning on cross play and mod.io compatibility should have ANY impact on mods much less cause anything over a given number to just break the damn game - my theory is that a size limitation - like one you might need to ensure stability on the Xbox One say - however - TOTALLY could cause that sort of an issue - though why it would be being applied to the PC version and bricking the PC version IDK - that's the ONLY idea I have with ZERO knowledge of the game code itself that makes any sense to me.

Either way the game still does not allow me to join and while I haven't tested yet I guarantee you me and my friend will be able to join if I bring it back down to the 93 I was at (which by the way last weeks' hotfix forced me to reduce from 106 for THE EXACT same reason) - and the hotfix that was supposed to have fixed it a week after it got broke and prior to that allowed me to get up to 87 I think it was so like what the fuck? - what keeps changing how many mods I can have and breaking the game if I have more than that - heck I even had one thing where I could join RIGHT after the server restarted but no one else could and if I left then I couldn't rejoin without restarting the server and if I didn't try and join close enough to it being back up then it wouldn't let me in.

Not trying to overwhelm with language/cursing or anger or word walls but ffs it's been almost 2 damn months - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE fix your shit already - I freaking love the game but not being able to have all my mods is killing me.

photo
1

Yep - so LITERALLY can not get any world new or existing to allow joining if the mod count is greater than OR equal to 100 - 99 works just fine, 100 no go, 101, no go, anything OVER 100 DOES NOT WORK/breaks the joining button. - just gonna copy/paste this over from the other bug thread that you all have erroneously marked as solved that most clearly isn't. Gonna be commenting on there again but haven't gotten any RESPONSES at all from y'all yet so not really expecting much at this point - been like 2 freaking months already and at least 3 hotfixes with specific so-called 'fixes' for this issue and it's STILL very much an issue and hasn't been fixed at all, and in fact this last one made me have to half my mod count AGAIN - I'd had over 140 working and now can't get anything over 99 no matter what mods I do or don't have.

photo

i copy my post from the as solved marked thread i opened for lan servers over cause it isnt fixed and basically the same problem:

please dont pretend that something is fixed when it is clearly not fixed

i have started it in local/console mode and it is not findable from ingame but over the steam serverlist, also i am unable to join via the steam serverlist or direct connect.

i would have written this earlier but i didnt have time for testing the last days.

i also did ru nanother testwith a full vanilla world and just basic settings, same result.

no worlds that i used for testing are reachable in a local/console enviroment.

i can go with nearly every major update breaking my private and server worlds (as it just happened with the warfare 1 update), but beeing unable to play together over a local/console hosted server so that the host can go do other wtuff while the rest of the group keeps playing is a major kill for long time multiplayer.

so in short:

you put a fixed tag on a clearly unfixed problem only to pretend that it is fixed in hope no one finds out it isn fixed.

just also taken a note that your so called "fix" now makes it unable to close ther server manager without doing a taskmanager based "hardkill".

I experienced identical problems today as shown in Qrahn's video. This thread talked a lot about mods as if they were the culprit; however, my game only had a handful of mods (that I've since removed) and is currently not modded at all. No servers even appeared to attempt to connect - Not even the vanilla Keen servers. I wasn't able to connect to ANY servers via the in-game browser or the Steam server browser at all. The Join World button didn't do ANYTHING other than graphically and audibly "click". Direct Connect just flashes the "Joining World" GUI window and then...nothing.

I even ran a network packet capture on my system while attempting to connect and never saw any indication that a connection was being attempted. The packet captures showed queries to the servers (apparently to every server that loaded into the in-game server browser) about their names, descriptions, player counts etc, but I saw no additional network traffic when clicking "Join World".

The only multiplayer connections I've been able to make were to non-dedicated worlds hosted by Steam Friends and joined directly through my Steam Friends list.

photo
2

After a bit more troubleshooting, I discovered that I could connect to EOS servers, however connection to all Steam servers isn't working for me.

photo
2

I have a issue as well, server shows in the list, but join button does nothing, and when i go to direct connect, the joining pops up for a millisecond then is gone again, i only have 78 mods, and as far as i know should work?

photo

@keen

still waiting for an actuall fix cause 198.027 "Fix for failure to join “mod-heavy” server" didnt fix anything.

and till 198.033 nothing changed

How is this shit still not fixed? Are you fucking kidding me?

You pay for a game, where they support custom mods, and now they are purposely limiting us on how many mods we are allowed to have?

STAFF, can we get an update on this. This problem is still not fixed.

Hello, Engineers!

As this issue is rather old, and our both bugs in internal system was fixed and tested properly, I will close this thread and mark it as solved.

If any of our are still experiencing this issue, please do not hesitate to open new thread with providng information about current state of the bug.

Thank you for your understanding.

Well, I right at this moment struggle with my hosted server and the exact issue that above a certain mod count, the server does not start, Is that a new symptom to an old problem? Searching for a newer bug report...

photo

Actually ironically been having the same issue myself fairly recently - I mean that at rotary number is WAAAAAAAY higher than it was the first time, but I can only add so many and then it just crashes upon restart - have absolutely no idea if they’ve somehow broken their own fix or if something else they’ve changed has caused a simile if technically separate issue - course we are talking upwards of 12-15+ GB of mods I like to run with :p so I doubt the number encountering it is very high lol
