Space Engineers fails on startup and then remains a ghost process

AJ shared this bug 2 years ago
Won't Fix

Upon starting Space Engineers the program never starts (no load screen or error) and then remains a ghost process in task manager. I've read through the log file and I assume it's something to do with a cfg file not being written? I couldn't figure out why and I did every driver and windows update possible. I've run steam and SE as admin, reinstalled on to my HDD and SSD, and tried dropping in an updated CFG file with no progress on startup. Along with running Steam and Space Engineers as admin and in various compatibility modes. Your expertise would be greatly appreciated!

I've attached the log file.

Hello, AJ!

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. Can you please supply your PC specs? I can see the log provided some but not all specs of the PC.

I appreciate you have tried quite a lot but please do any steps here you have not yet completed

  • Verify your game files in Steam
  • Right click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

/bfSnH0rGoN-NgctSWBJN3LfvWZvgnfye9BrPgucxV0n8TDpNc-7yZYwSifdRXyl1quu20KGUNmHzSf6VGRbhWS4a_EYn2MclxJSOz6eVarmz-fhTWVaofVOAVZN_l_leF9dgQ5GF

  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file
  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

Kind Regards

Hi Laura,

Here are my cpu specs (please let me know if additional are needed):

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8600K CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz

RAM 16.0 GB

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

HDD Free Space 516.09 GB

SSD Free Space 117.81 GB

Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

Version 10.0.19043 Build 19043

I completed all of the provided steps, except the deletion of the SpaceEngineers.cfg as the file never existed in the roaming folder. The same issue is still occurring.

Hello, AJ!

Thank you for confirming. Could you please try putting my config file in the Space Engineers folder? Then I would suggest verifying the files and starting it :)

Hi Laura,

I verified and some files were added. After starting up, I still have the same issues. I've attached the new log.

Hello, AJ!

Thank you for this. Could you please provide your log from Windows Event Viewer when you try to start the game?

Hi Laura,

What is the best way to go about saving this log with just the Space Engineers information? I'm not to familiar with how to utilize event viewer more than seeing errors.

Thanks,

AJ

Hello, AJ!

There is an option on the right to save selected events. Alternatively which is probably easier is just to copy and paste either into the message here or note pad and attach :)

Laura,

After running Space Engineers from Steam several times, and looking at the Event Viewer application logs, no logs were generated specifically for Space Engineers. Strangely, not a single log pertained to Space Engineers specifically, even though the process was running in task manager, albeit as a ghost process. I did however get a few logs shortly after (within 1 minute) that might be related to the Space Engineers issues, but I can't tell for sure. I've attached the 4 logs that occurred after booting Space Engineers in order of appearance.

Thanks,

AJ

Hello, AJ!

Thank you for these logs. I've had a look at them and although they don't mention Space Engineers they are mentioning Application: IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe which is explained here - https://www.file.net/process/iastordatamgrsvc.exe.html I wonder if you are able to update this at all possible? I did some digging and I think this person had a similar error code that was causing them game issues although more freezing may also be worth a look https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/9b0dc0c0-4196-4c02-a309-b987e16ffad0/error-netruntime-amp-iastordatamgrsvcexe?forum=winservergen

Hi Laura,

I apologize for the delay. I tried a few things in regards to IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe, including uninstalling and running, and updating to the newest versions and running. Unfortunately, none of those seemed to change the outcome. (And nothing of note was generated in the logs.) After another day, my HDD started failing and some other issues with my cpu occurred and I'm in the process of getting a new computer. Thank you for all the assistance, and although we were unable to resolve the strange issues, I'm going to assume they were isolated to my old rig and the new rig won't have that problem.

Thanks again,

AJ

Hello, AJ!

Thank you for getting back to us with an update. Hopefully, it was indeed an issue isolated to your old PC (although never a great thing to experience!) In this case, I will close this thread but please do not hesitate to get back into contact with us if you have difficulty and experience the same issue with your new setup :)

Kind Regards
