Game freezes on [Unloading world] when playing offline.

KaiiKiller shared this bug 3 years ago
Solved

Today I played SE for a few hours in offline mode, obviously because no internet at the time....

I found when exiting out of a world to return to the main menu the game is freezing indefinitely at [Unloading world], then having to alt-tab out and forcing the game to close.

Screenshot showing where it is freezing.

My guess is telemetry is trying to run but you didn't take into consideration people do play the game offline and thus this is creating a situation of the game basically becoming stuck because there is no internet...

Just a wild guess.

Hello, KaiiKiller!

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. I have been trying to reproduce offline this but sadly with no luck. Is this happening in a specific game/scenario or in a very intensive world? Maybe a lot of mods etc? If it has been able to save at all, are you able to provide a copy of the save to see if I can reproduce it at all?

  • You can access your save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. There should be a folder with your SteamID and your saves.
  • Please zip the file and attach it here. If you are having difficulty attaching files you can optionally use Google Drive. When sharing a google drive link please make sure it is set to be downloadable by anyone with the link.

Hello, the world is vanilla, no mods are used.

Now you would know KeenSWH have changed the way Space Engineers handles looking at save locations since introducing the micro dlc's "I still have no idea why the game was changed to do this, I would love to know" when offline or online, it didn't used to act like this but now the game is made to look at a folder numbered 1234567891011 when offline/no internet, the Steam ID number folder is what the game looks at when steam has internet access, my steam id is 76561197975688257, when there is no internet access you can obviously move the save files from the steam id folder to the now offline folder 1234567891011, which I have obviously done in this case when I had no internet access and wanted to play Space Engineers on the weekend.

I honestly think you might have a hard time reproducing this freeze on unloading world bug, it does not happen 100% of the time.

-------

Along with this unloading world freeze on exit, I thought I'd try pointing out another bug here with my save relating to twitching grids.

I have saved my world with the character standing next to the cockpit seat inside a large ship, next to the cockpit seat there is a large grid rotor and attached a small grid head on it, from that I have built some small grid blocks to do some timer related things on the large ship, this is causing the ship to twitch, could you please have one of the devs look at this to try figuring out and fixing this behavior of twitching grids.

You don't need to try to reproduce this one, it's just always happening.

Hello, KaiiKiller!

Thank you for the further information. Would it please be possible to open a separate thread for the twitching issue? You can copy and paste the information over but it's just so I can link things separately from the back here. I can see what you mean about the twitching but will update further in the correct thread :)

Thank you so much!

Hello, KaiiKiller!

Are you still having issues with the twitching issue? I don't believe a new thread was made. Please let me know in case I have missed it :) Or, if it is not an issue anymore.

Played SE for about half an hour today with no internet present just to test and it did not freeze, that said as I described earlier it doesn't happen 100% of the time.

If it happens again I will most certainly update this thread.

Hello, KaiiKiller!

Thank you for the update. I will wait a little longer for some more testing from you and close the thread if required.

Hello, I did go and make a new thread for that issue like you requested, that thread is here.

https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/twitching-grids

I think it is still present to a certain extent, the visual twitching has died down last time I looking at it although now it appears to be making the large ship very slowly move by itself, kind of like if it was drifting in space very very slowly, although this is when it is powered and has thrusters turned on so it shouldn't be doing that, I'm guessing phantom force is still at play with a block somewhere pushing against another seeing as pistons are being used.

Hello, KaiiKiller!

Thank you for letting me know. That unfortunately is in our feedback section rather than the bug section which is why it was missed. Is it possible to copy/paste it into a bug thread?

I have monitored the game log after this starts. The log indicates that the game is repeatedly autosaving the world about every two minutes. I saw "Autosave initiated" in the log about two dozen times after "Unloading world" appears on the screen. It only happens after playing for several hours. (Which is probably why you can't reproduce it.) I have not yet determined how long it takes for the bug to appear.

Hi all,

i have the same issue and a search on Google brought me here. I play singleplayer only, vanilla game, currently playing the "Learning to survive" scenario. Internet connection is always online on this computer.

When i load the game and exit after just a few minutes, all is fine. But when playing several hours, my exit screen is stuck at "unloading world", and i have to persuade it to "unload" by killing the SE task. I didn't even know, a world must be "unloaded" after saving it... why not just exit then? Nevermind... ;-)

In case it has something to do with hardware platform: i use AMD only. Ryzen 5 2600X and RX470 8GB, 32GB RAM, system (Win10 64) and game on 2 different SSD.

EDIT: i attached 2 logs. The older one represents a long game session with the issue while trying to exit, the newer one is for comparison after a pretty short session and a clean exit.

wtf... i can't edit my post above? omg...

Well, then i have to add my edit as a self-talk...

EDIT2: on the above game with the issue i answered the question, if i wanna save before exit, with "yes". Now i saved manually before exiting, and answered this question with "no"... and i didn't had the issue. It was a clean exit to the main menu this time. I'm not sure if i just have not played long enough, or if there is a thing with the saving-while-quitting procedure. I attach the current log for examination.

Since i can't edit my posts, i have to contiue my self-talk...

EDIT3: My last game session was a long one and i tried to exit with saving manually before hitting the exit button, i answered the question with "no"... and yet i got stuck in the unload screen. So it's obviously not the saving-while-exit procedure, that is causing the issue.

No response from Keen yet... are they also stuck in something? I ask for a friend... ;-)

Same bug here. Vanilla. Play offline a lot. Played for several hours. Get stuck on Unloading world when exiting. I have had this problem multiple times over the past year. If I force stop Space Engineers, it messes up the save game, and causes hard drive issues. I have to do error checks on my hard drive to even get windows to respond well. Then most of the time messes up the Space Engineers game itself (steam sees it as not being installed). And I have to reinstall. Other save games are there, but the one it gets stuck on is gone.

Cannot just let Space Engineers run. I have let it run for 3 hours, and it never unloads. In task manager it shows its at about 4500 MB of memory at the time of the lockup. It dwindles down to about 1100 MB, but never lower. I'd send a save, but since it gets damaged, and then removed by error check, I can't.

Well, I stand corrected. Something must have changed in recent updates, that may make this at least survivable. When I posted above I had just had this issue, and was leaving it running, but expected no change from previous times. This time, the memory usage is still creeping down. I have left it running for about an hour, and it is now down to 444.3 MB. Maybe it will clear itself this time, and close the game. ( I was playing offline, as the internet here sucks. Got online just to look up fix and post.

The bug occurs after using any blueprint. It can occur if you load, bookmark a ship, and immediately exit without saving. It can occur after loading a blueprint into a projector. Relpacing a blueprint repeatedly can cause cause blueprunts to stop working alltogether. A symptom of this is that the new blueprint will have no picture. Blueprints will subsequently not load wirh the message "large blueprints take time to load", saving is not possible in this situation as "the game is already saving". At this point the game WILL get stuck "unloading world". Getting stuck frequently happens after accessing a blueprint in any way. It may happen occasionally without accessing blueprints if ctrl-c/ctrl-v are used alot. (ALOT!) I must point out that when I say offline I mean no internet connection at all, as that is how I play games. You may not be able to reproduce without putting steam in offline mode and disconnecting lan cable/turning off wifi. I have been using the blueprint menu as much as possible in all saves available. It is not connected to a particular save or blueprint. It is 'random' but I can make it happen 100% in any save just by using blueprint functions enough.

Hello, Engineers!

Thank you all for your comments. The user '"Xxxxxxxxxxxx' had excellent reproduction steps for this. I was able to reproduce the issue every time by putting Steam into offline mode, pasting a blueprint, and immediately exiting without saving. I originally thought this was fixed in an upcoming update but have found the issue persists. Due to this, I have reported the issue internally. I really appreciate everyone's comments and help on this :)

Laura, i have the issue, and i never ever used any blueprint OR set steam into offline mode. So, this issue cannot be related to blueprints or the offline mode. But lets wait for a fix, and then we'll check again. ;-)

Hello, Engineers!

I´m happy to announce you that this issue is already fixed and will be introduced to the game in upcoming major update.

No it's not.

This issue is not fixed. I just downloaded the game this week. I have only played vanilla, I'm always online. Every time I exit (all 4 times I've launched, played, then tried to exit), it freezes on "Unloading world".

the same problem here, no blueprint used and stuck at unloading world. Well done Ondrej :D try again but better next time.

Update has not been released yet seeing as the next "Major Update" has not been released as of this point in time, one would assume what Ondrej Borz has stated is true... until what Ondrej Borz's happens we will not know.

Hello, Engineer!

The fix for this is in v200

Thank you.

Yes please. And make sure, the task is not longer stuck in task manager after "exiting" the game please. :)

I hope, with "200", what would a pretty strange version number, you mean 2.0, and not just 1.200? Because in 1.200 the bug still exist.

Hi!

This issue is not fixed, I just found it.

It seems like I can not save the game while this bug appears. I tried to save right before I quit, and an error prompt told me that I am unable to save because the game was saving that time. It was suspicious, since saving used to be very quick. I tried to save again, but still the game didn't let me to do so. Then I pressed exit to main menu, in that moment i froze into the unloading game screen. I have got 2 DLC, warfare 2 and wasteland. But in the actual survival game there were several dlc elements. The game is Pertam Orbiter, default options. Right before I quit this game mode I played the very same Pertam Orbiter game in creative mode, using default options too, in order to save one of the preexisting ships blueprints, because I messed a ship up a littlebit (the Dropship). I did exit from the creative world with seemingly no saving, or unloading issues.

This ticket is unsolved.

Take care!

I have also just had this problem. In spite of 700 odd hours in the game, I never did the tutorial, so started it, no mods, no nothing, and it hangs on unloading world. I say hang, but the game is still running. Its as if it's waiting for flag to say its done. I had to close the window, then used steam, to finally close down the game. Windows 10. Nothing special.

I just bought the game and am having this issue, so it isn’t fixed. It doesn’t matter how long I play. I m currently in the tutorial Learning to survive. I’m on Steam .
