Game crashes with latest AMD drivers

Bence Márta shared this bug 3 years ago
Won't Fix

The game crashes at various stages of loading (loading screen, menu, loading save etc...) and even in game at random intervals. I use the Radeon Software version 20.4.1 but with 19.10.1 it worked fine. I've seen similar topics but haven't seen any specific driver versions. My graphics card is a Sapphire RX5700XT Pulse with manually set and tested cooling settings. If more information is needed, I'm glad to provide it.

EDIT: The game does not crash but freezes, sometimes even for 2 minutes. Since I have tested with Radeon Software versions 19.10.1 and 20.2.2 and the problem still exists.

Hello, Engineer!

Could you please provide us with logs? You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers. Please send us SpaceEngineers.log and VRageRender-DirectX11.log.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Yes I attached the requested logs. If nothing is found in it, I can try to replicate the problem few times but as I said it's more like a long freeze where the game just starts responding after 1 or 2 minutes. Also I noticed that it has a pretty high chance of freezing when I try to copy in a relatively bigger (1-2000 blocks) ship. With the Radeon Software 20.4.1 it even freezed at the starting animation, even before the menu. Now 20.2.1 works the best but these freezes are still present.

If you need any more specific information, I'll kindly provide it.

I'd like to have a little update on the situation, as seemingly I have found a solution to the problem.

I started playing again a few days ago in hopes that the problem has been fixed. The game ran flawlessly the first time. After I restarted the game, I couldn't play for more than 10-15 minutes.

Then I started messing around in Radeon Software. Under the "Gaming" tab, in game specific settings I disabled "Surface Format Optimization" under the "Advanced" options and set FreeSync from "AMD Optimized" to "ON", the game is running now for almost 2 hours without the smallest lag. This seemingly solved for me, but it still needs validation that it really works. (I don't think FreeSync was the problem, but I wrote it so my report is accurate) Screenshots of my exact settings are attached.

I ask everyone who has/had this problem, inform me and more importantly Keen, if this solved their problem.

EDIT: after around 2 and a half hours it crashed and keeps crashing

Hello, Bence!

I appreciate this thread is quite old. Is this still an issue that persists with you? I see you solved it and then later edited the comment to mention you later had the crash. Please let me know and I can close this if required :)

Hello, Engineer!

Because there is no new comment from you, and we are unable to reproduce the issue on our own, I will close this thread now as outdated.

If you or any other player will experience this issue again, please make a new thread and provide all needed info there.

Thank you for understanding.

Kind Regards
