Black screen and fail to launch

Ben Sheard shared this bug 3 years ago
Won't Fix

Coming back to playing Space Engineers (after a couple years), purchased the ultimate edition.

I now can't get the game to launch.

Followign the fail to launch thread I reinstalled windows 10 (it had been failing to update so needed a fresh install), and re installed space engineers, but neither has fixed the problem.

When launching the game (from desktop or steam) I get the little wasteland launcher window with my game version etc., then the entire screen goes black like the game is launching (my cursor changes to the game blue style cursor), my frame rate then gradually drops until the game just closes, with no error message.

What can I try? I see nothing in the log.

Edit to add:

I tried adding the "-skipintro" the steam, and now I get to a menu that says "welcome engineer" at the top, but the game closes itself again just like before.

Edit to add2 :

Deleting ":\Steam\SteamApps\common\SpaceEngineers\Content\Videos" gets me a bit further onwards... I manage to hit OK on the "welcome engineer" page, and accept the GDPR pop up... but again the game just closes.

The good news is that the .log file now has crash info in it! (Log attached 20210313_202331918) but I don't see anything useful in it.

On re launch I can now get the the menu for 1 or 2 seconds, before the sound goes juddery and the game closes...

OK Looks to now di a DX11 issue as if a force the game into DX9 I can get it to work....

Further we go down the rabbit hole

Well, I managed to play the game for a while having launched in DX9... then mid painting my station the game crashed again! Looks like a DX11 error somehow.

This game seems incredibly unrobust and very frustrating.

Hello, Ben,

thanks for letting us know about this issue you are experiencing and I´m sorry that it is happening to you.

Thanks for extensive work you did.

There are couple more options you can try to fix it.

1. I see that you did fully reinstall Windows, so it´s obvious they are up to date. Did you check whether your graphic card drivers doesn´t need update as well?

2. After the crash happens again to you, can you please run "Windows Event Viewer"? If there will be mentioned kernelbase.dll issue, then it´s pointing towards corrupted windows user. Making new user, installing the game there and run it on new user/account might fix the crashing.

3. And last, but not least, it helped to some players with exception you have in the second log. Please make back-up copy of your SE folder in Roaming folder (so you can restore saves, mods etc. later), and delete whole folder. You can find it in by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers (but I´m sure you know as you are obviously checking for logs in the same folder :) ).

Please let me know if any of these proposed solutions worked for you.

Kind Regards

Hello, Engineer!

Because there is no new comment from you, and we are unable to reproduce the issue on our own, I will close this thread now as outdated.

If you or any other player will experience this issue again, please make a new thread and provide all needed info there.

Thank you for understanding.
