Regular "physic freeze"

Papa ours shared this bug 21 days ago
Investigating

Hey !

I bought the game today and started the "lean to survive scenario" and I noticed that the game froze every +- 5 mins for 10 to 30 secs.

Those freezes can either occur randomly or occur when opening the pause menu.

I have two youtube links, one where the bug occur when pressing escape :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_ZZW3aGJIg

(freeze at 4:45. I opened the pause menu a few time in the video and this time it took a long time to open the menu)

Here is another youtube video of a freeze, this time occurring randomly :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz0Csuhb5RI

(freeze at 2:30. It's in the tutorial scenario mentioned earlier)

When I have one of this freezes, the welding torche or the reactors of a ship continues to move, as if only the physic of the game was freezing.

Here are my computer specs :

CPU : Ultra 9 285K

GPU : rtx 4080 super

RAM : 64 gb DDR5

I verified the games files and no missing file was found. The game is freshly installed, for the first time on this computer, and I didn't installed any mods. I was playing in solo.

The game is running on default high with fxaa disabled.

A dev in the steam forum asked me to try to run the game in medium : it did not fix my issue.

How can I fix this issue ?

Please, let me know if you need anything else :)

Also, I tried the fix mentioned in this steam thread and it did not fix my issue :

And here is a third youtube link, with both types of freezes happening back to back, with the shift + f11 menu open

https://youtu.be/MgCmcbUJ624

Freezes at 03:25. Same as described earlier, the dust continues to move even tho the simulation is frozen. Also, my FPS counter on the top left display 120 fps.

(the shift + f11 menu left by itself, I didn't removed it *)

It is again in a new save

I also tried a game where I enabled online mod : I had the same issue

Hey !

I saw in other threads that you often ask for log files.

Here is mine when a freeze happens and a video showing the time :

https://youtu.be/3q4Yjd5sZ08

The freeze happened at around 20:24 (real time) and is at 4:50 in the video.

Also, I noticed that the freeze feels oddly similar as the freeze that happens when I inspect a random drop pod (the thing that gives steam items). Maybe it could be linked ?

Hey !

I mentioned earlier that I felt that the freeze was similar to the one while searching a drop pod that gives a steam item.

So I tried to play for a bit with my Ethernet cable disconnected, with the red "No steam connection" warning

And the freezes were gone !

Just in case, I tried to re-play with internet : the game was unplayable again !

Soo I don't know exactly what cause the freeze, but something must be terribly wrong on the network side of things...

Looks exactly like the issue I posted.. Same freezing intervals, and some animations keep playing although physics are frozen.

Perhaps you can post the other log file too, so we can check if the freezing coincides with analytics network request in a similar way? The game creates 2 log files, one starting with "VRageRender" and another starting with "SpaceEngineers" in the same folder.

Interesting! I'll have to try and see if this "fixes" the problem for me as well.

If not having a network connection is a factor, I think my theory of the issue being related to analytics network requests is even more likely..

Sure !

I didn't know that there was 2 log files.

This should be the second log file of the latest video i sent

I also search in my others log file and didn't find anything suggesting an http request like in your log file. I could be wrong though.

The ElasticSearch log lines refer to analytics requests. In my first log sample, the HeartBeat request fails entirely, but that's not the case every time. The thing which remains constant, is that the ElasticSearch Heartbeat event log line always happens to appear at the same time as the game freezes.

This thing has been reported several times before, but the original posters have abandoned their threads, which Keen then promptly closes..

I'm currently trying to narrow the problem down by blocking the analytics network requests - after all, it would be nice to not have to disconnect entirely in order to play the game.. Tried blocking exchange.test2.goodai.com, but that didn't help - the ElasticSearch log lines keep appearing. Now I'm trying to find out a way to block hosts which look like ec2-3-123-161-150.eu-central-1.compute.amazonaws.com or ec2-34-237-25-229.compute-1.amazonaws.com, but this is slightly trickier, because the first part of the addresses keep changing..

Another video of the problem of the game's physics freezing or crashing.

It also randomly occurs when pressing Escape, accessing the inventory, or in the main menu right at the start, as in the following video.
