Surging Frame Rate

Need More Information

So I have been having this issue for a while, but up until the latest update, I could always work around it. Now, the work around doesn't work.

Issue: When playing Space Engineers, gameplay surges almost like a heartbeat. fast, slow, fast, slow. I have been unable to deduce why so far. It is very regular, about 1 second per cycle. I used F11 to look at the log, but nothing there except an error that states it's because I don't have the Signal DLC yet. Shift+F11 shows a regular, but very slight surging across FPS, UPS, simulation speed, and Rendering. Doesn't seem to match the severity of the slowdown. All of the CPU and GPU loads fluctuate between mid 20's% to mid 30's%

Old Workaround: Before this latest update, if I went into Graphics Settings and changed the Lighting quality, didn't matter what from or to, the surging would go away until the next time I started up the game.

Now, this workaround doesn't work, and the game is unplayable.

I tried a new game, removed all mods, restarted the computer, verified files, and even completely uninstalled, and wiped steam space engineers folder and %appdata% folder, then re-installed fresh. No change. To verify it is a fresh install, when running the game now, I get tutorial popups, had to accept the EULA again, and all settings have been reverted to defaults.

What else can I check/do?

Hello Josh,

Thank you for reaching out to us and we sincerely apologize for the issue you've been experiencing.

First, please ensure that both your graphics drivers and operating system are up-to-date. After updating, try the following steps, which may help resolve the issue;

Launch the game and from the game's main menu, go to Options > Display > in the Video Adapter dropdown, select your dedicated graphics card. Also, uncheck the Vertical Sync box if its enabled/checked. Ensure that the Video Mode resolution shows *** (recommended aspect ratio). If not, select the recommended resolution from the list and click OK to save.

Next, start a new world or join a server (preferably an unmodded/vanilla, world/server) to check if the issue still occurs. If it does, try these additional steps:

  1. Go to Options > Graphics.
  2. In the Quality Preset dropdown, select Low or Medium and click OK to save.

If the game continues to lag, press Shift+F11 (to display world stats on-screen), and record (also send us) a video/screen recording showing the lag in the unmodded single-player world/server. Please also include the latest log files from the time the issue occurred.

  • You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Kind Regards,

Ok, here is the log file. Using the steps you suggested, I believe I was able to narrow it down to shaders quality. I can run everything else on High, but if I drop that down to medium, the issue goes away about 90%. I included settings screenshots. Only things I modified as you suggested is quality preset and vSync. NOTE: I did modify these settings for testing reasons AFTER the recording and log file, but before screenshots.
