Unable to Connect to Multiplayer

Won't Fix

Good evening,

I recently purchased Space Engineers through Steam but have had a lot of trouble connecting to a friend's server. I typically can only join once after completely reinstalling the game and all subsequent times are met with a "Server is not responding" message. I have tried previous trouble shooting steps from the forum to include deleting the config file, deleting the roaming data folder, verifying game files, and finally reinstalling but the issue persists with each step. I have attached my log for reference. Are there any further trouble shooting steps you recommend?

Hello Will,

thank you for reaching our forum with this problem.

We are sorry for delayed reply.

So if I understand it correctly, you just bought the game, right? So it was never really working for you on this or any other PC?

Is any part of the game working for you?

Are you able to start and play single player? Or any of the multiplayer mods (Lobby, dedicated server, official servers)?

What type of server is the friend of yours running? Is the game started online in Lobby mode, or is he also using the Dedicated server app?

Are there any mods active on the server? Have you tried to join a server/start a game without mods?

Please also try to speak about it with your friend. It might be good idea to know what is this problem looking from his side. Is he seeing you connecting to the server? Is your character spawned there or not? Are there any connectivity issues/errors when you are trying to connect to the server?

Is the problem still the same if you try the other way around; so you are hosting the game? Can you friend join, or the server does not start at all, or is unresponsive?

Please see full workaround steps, so you are sure you did everything, since you are mentioning just some of those.

  • Verify your game files in Steam - right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (it means your game configuration will be deleted) - you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder - same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

If nothing from this list would work for you, please reply to the questions above.

Also provide me with a new logs from both - the game and the server of your friend, if possible.

If he is using the Dedicated server app, he can find the logs in \Roaming\SpaceEngineersDedicated for the server.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards
