Stuck in spectator mode when joining any server

Ben Arthurs shared this bug 9 months ago
Need More Information

Every time I try to join any server, I always get stuck in some sort of weird spectator mode, its like normal f8 spectator mode but I'm in the default star system and have no ui and can not open any menus other than the normal escape menu. The only time I've had this problem fixed is when I connected to the hotspot on my phone, however I can not use my phone as I have limited data. If anyone could help me fix this issue id greatly appreciate it.

Hello, Ben,

thank you for reaching our forum with this problem that you are experiencing.

When you say "any server", what actually does that mean, please?

Are you trying to play on some community servers, modded servers, Keen official servers... ?

The rest of the game works fine for you; the single player, online Lobby mode?

Please try these general workarounds that help most of the players to solve most of the issue:

  • Verify your game files in Steam – right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (it means your game configuration will be deleted) – you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder – same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

Please let me know if anything from this works for you. If not, can you please share me a log file from any of the affected game sessions, where you experienced this problem?

You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards

Hello

Thank you for the reply, I have tried all the work arounds that you have listed, and I still have the same problem.

When I say any server, I mean any keen official servers, any community servers, vanilla or modded. I have the same problem where I spawn in the centre of earth in the base star system sandbox, I have no ui apart from the escape menu and the players menu, where I can see all players that are online, players online can also see that I'm online on the server.

All single player aspects of the game work fine, including the steam workshop and modio. It is only when I try to join a multiplayer game i have this issue.

The only way I have managed to fix this is by using my mobile data, which I have no problems with the game. However, this is not a permanent solution and would like to get it fixed if possible. The only thing I can think of that is causing the problem is that my network is blocking some aspects of the game, which I find strange considering that mobile data is usually a lot more restricted.

I'd also like to point out that any other multiplayer game I have played does work its just space engineers multiplayer that does not for some reason.

I will attach the log file for when I attempt to join a keen official server.

Thank you for you help.

I have this same bug, started occuring about 2 days before launch of Contact update. i have verified, reinstalled, restarted steam, updated drivers, restarted system and deleted the folders suggested. The only thing i could think of is possible IP problems, as my friend is in UK, and i join his worlds from the US

Yeah, think its some ip thing, still got this issue. Only way ive managed to fix this issue is to use mobile data, must be some port the game requires for multiplayer is being blocked or something by the isp is all i can think. Would be nice if the support people would give more help than just the usual support list, as ive already tried all that but oh well.

i have tried my own mobile data and that didnt work, so im unsure what it could be, maybe its something on my friends end, but their steadfast in saying their end is fine

edit: for the log files, how would i properly find the session i had the problem in?
