Mined voxels appear filled in

Need More Information

This is still present.

Mined voxels will appear filled in | Space Engineers PC Support (keenswh.com)

Note, if the world is running on a Windows PC, the same PC does NOT have this issue, only friends who connect to the world.

We'll reset the world voxel map, but this bug still exists after 5+ years. Also, it appears it is related to where meteorites hit the ground.

Hello, John!

Thank you for writing to us and we sincerely apologize for the issue you have been experiencing.

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to reproduce the issue on our end. Could you kindly provide more information about the issue?

Does the issue only occur for clients/friends who connected to this world/server, and does the same voxel display correctly for the host/you?

Did the issue occur on an asteroid created by the Voxel Hand?

Was the world/server modded (with active MODs) where this issue was occurred? If so, could you please check on a vanilla world/server (with no active MODs) to see if the issue persists there as well?

If it does, could you please send us a screen recording or video showing the issue, the world save file where we can replicate this issue, and the log file from the time the issue occurred?

  • You can access your save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. There should be a folder with your SteamID and your saves. If you are on a Dedicated Server, the save file can be found in the \AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineersDedicated\Saves folder.
  • Please zip the file and attach it here. If you are having difficulty attaching files you can optionally use Google Drive. When sharing a Google Drive link please make sure it is set to be downloadable by anyone with the link.
  • You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers. If the issue is specific for clients/friends, they can also find log files in the same folder on their device.

Kind Regards,

Keen Software House: QA Department

It only seems to happen when the environment level is set to catastrophic. The meteorites destroy the ground around the player bases and the Abandoned SettlementV2 bases. They arrive so often, after a few days of playing hundreds, if not thousands of craters cover the ground around the bases. So far, no issues when environment is set to Safe or Normal.

Yes, the same voxel appears correctly for the host. Also note, the alien vx2 file was almost 500MB in size. I also noticed the friends get a steaming icon for several minutes.

Every day, the game would lag more and more, especially when players joined.

Replacing the Alien vx2 file solved the issue.

The issues always seem to be where a meteorite crashed on the ground and then that area was drilled with a drill ship. I know that one time the drilling was done using the Block Tool option added to the toolbar and both left clicking and right clicking into and under the crater was done.

The game saves were taking a over a minute to complete instead of a few seconds.

Based on what we've researched in Google, we should be able to reproduce this by starting a new world and setting the environment level to Catastrophic for a couple of days. The Abandoned Settlement V2 mod spawns in bases and those become magnets. I've also noticed meteor showers sometimes happen very frequently around these bases, sometimes happening immediately after the first shower completed.

We'll attempt to reproduce and reply here if we are successful. The other players who join the host just informed me it has always happened, but they couldn't stand it any longer.

Thank You

After further research into this issue, the cause is due to the large VX2 file and the client not being able to stay in sync, thus the Streaming icon constantly showing on the client. You can reproduce the issue on a client by having a planet of 34+ MB in size, have a large hole (like 8x8 drills going down a few pistons deep). Disconnect and then reconnect after the world has been running on the host for a day. The next time the client begins to load in the world is new looking, the hole takes about 30 seconds to show up. During that time you can fall into the hole and be underneath the ground layer space.

It appears the modular encounter system has some sort of ability, though I've never seen it happen, to despawn and restore the world voxel back to the way it was. I've also read that many years ago there was a cleanup tool that built in that restored the planet where meteorites struck the ground, but no mention on if it is still built in or how to access\use it.

It appears SE needs to auto enable a cleanup system if the meteor showers are to be used, or else it's best not to use them, which takes away from the fun.

Perhaps the voxel changes could be consolidated every so often... For example, if you dig a hole or cave you could have hundreds or a hundred thousand voxel changes. If you then looked at which changes were connected you could then optimize the voxel changes into a smaller number of changes by combining them into larger changes. Another way to think of it if the world was made of cubes. You dig out 10,000 cubes and have 10,000 changes, but you could optimize those 10,000 changes down to say 10 changes by combining them.

There's all sort so of ideas\solutions due to this being a common issue.
