Space Engineers will not start - says to update Windows and Video drivers

Paul Martin shared this bug 5 months ago
Solved

I have gone thru all the trouble shooting and followed everything suggested anywhere. Have even reinstalled windows and Nvidea drivers, after re- installing the game on steam. All .Net are installed and up to date. All DirectX are new V12. I have submitted a log file and looking at it it appears the 640x480 mode can't be found and may crash there, I added that mode to my monitor and video drivers and that did nothing.

I am at a loss and have tried things for the past 2 days

Hello, Paul Martin,

thank you for reaching our forum with the problem that you are experiencing.

Can you please provide me more information?

What exactly is the problem on your end? Are you able to launch the game at all and it will crash later (in menu, when playing...), or the game won't even start for you?

Do you run the game through Steam or did you try to launch it directly from the game folder using the exe file (...\Steam\steamapps\common\SpaceEngineers\Bin64\SpaceEngineers (application))? If not, please try and let me know if there was any difference.

You are writing that you have tried everything that you have found so far online etc. . Can you please confirm that you did try all of these? Preferably also try all of these once more (even when done before), so we can be certain about it.

  • Verify your game files in Steam – right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (it means your game configuration will be deleted) – you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder – same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

Thank you in advance for going through this list and confirming that you have tried all the options mentioned here.

If you will try all the options and you would still be experiencing this problem, can you please share me a log from the game and also from the Windows Event Viewer?

For the game logs:

You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Here you can find all the info needed for navigating in and obtaining the log from Windows Event Viewer app:

Thank you in advance.

Thanks - just re-performed all the trouble shooting, validating steps.

Here are the dump files from after the troubleshooting steps tonight

When starting in Steam, it brings up the splash screen - with 10th anniversary update - it then pops up with this error (see screen snip) about 20 seconds later as it appears to load.  I have tried running it directly from the steam folder and I get the same error,

Hope this all helps ...

Hello - Any solutions or Ideas ? I really want to play this game, and I know my system will certainly handle it.

Is it possibly be the Thread: 19 -> Mode not found: 640x480 @ 0 in the log file .. ?

Please help me solve this issue

You can close the ticket - I uninstalled and reinstalled the game, this time to a fast ssd and it worked. I believe my other drive was too slow. As I had uninstalled and reinstalled to that same drive 3 times.

Thanks ! I am excited to play
