Space Engineers crash on server join

Tommy shared this bug 17 months ago
Won't Fix

Had a very thorough browse through all the solutions people have had to this bug, I've played about 40 hours before any of this started happening, it started once me and my friends got into space. For a few attempts, clearing the shader cache, the .cfg in the Roaming folder, even a clean reinstall of the game didn't fix the issue. New graphics drivers, updated, nothing at all. Everything else works in singleplayer fine, it just crashes and sometimes on a few occasions now has completely bluescreened my computer causing a full restart, with the stop code relating to my graphics drivers, but I don't see how they could relate to something that only started 40 hours into the game.

One of my friends experienced similar problems but solved it with the .cfg removal method, any help would be appreciated as trawling through these logs, I seem to be a little out of my depth

Issue seems very similar to that of https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/space-engineers-crash-on-server-join 's problem, however our server is modless, with maybe one exception of an uninstalled ore detector workshop item that I've removed and cannot find any trace of anymore.

Thanks

Hello, Tommy,

thanks for letting us know.

There are several errors and exceptions in your log. We would need to try and resolve them all one by one.

1) Please make sure the game uses one (better) graphic card. I assume the GeForce one. Please make sure the game is not trying to launch using the Intel UHD.

2) Your log is full of "TryChangeToFullscreen failed" errors.

If you are in the game, in the main menu at least, you can try to change the resolution and window mode there. Or if you are not able to get to Options – Display Settings from the game, you can try to locate this file on your PC and change the value manually.

For this, go to SE folder in Roaming, by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar, you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\. There you should be able to find a SpaceEngineers.cfg file. You can open in using e.g. notepad. Find line 90 and 92, that says

<Key>WindowMode</Key>

<Value xsi:type="xsd:string">1</Value>

By changing the number in line 92, you can change the Fullscreen setting here manually. It goes like: Windowed 0, Fullscreen window 1 and Fullscreen 2. Save the file and try to run the game.

3) There is also "Error creating buffer: SharpDX.SharpDXException: HRESULT: [0x887A0005]". This is the error that is connected to the graphical driver crash. To fix this, please try to change the resolution of your game to 16:10 (recommended) aspect ratio. You are currently using 2560x1440 (16:9). Also make sure that the correct graphic adapter and/or monitor has been selected in the Video Adapter setting.

Hope something from these fixes/workarounds will work for you.

Please let me know. If you would still be experiencing the issues, please provide a new log so I can see whether there is any kind of progress.

Kind Regards

Hi again,

after leaving this report, I started another fresh install of the game, which did successfully load into the server. Upon leaving and rejoining later on to check whether the fix would persist to another instance, it did not, however I did get an actual crash dialogue box and a bug report option, which was new.

The aspect ratio of my monitor IS 16:9, I've only been using the recommended aspect ratio's but I did try various ratios and none of them fixed the problem, back to the same old instant crash to desktop, although no blue-screening as of writing this (edit: bluescreened on next connection attempt - LOL)

After verifying integrity of game files this is the most recent crash log, aspect ratio 16:9 following the standard resolution of my monitor (not downscaling), different resolutions across the whole range of aspect ratios, all the way down to the very bottom to make sure it wasn't a VRAM problem, correct GFX and monitor selected (although is showing as "monitor 4" even though only one of my TWO monitors is actually in use by windows), tried VSync OFF and ON and neither work.

Server host enabled experimental mode this morning but I can't see a tie between today's crashes and that change, since they're the exact same "symptoms" as beforehand.

Hope these logs are useful,

Thanks for your help so far,

Tommy

More logs from another crash after

- Fresh graphics drivers

- Verif game files again

- restart machine after disabling hardware acceleration

This morning after another reinstall overnight, I had a successful connection to the server, all was fine. Was dreading having to leave and rejoin since the host needed to restart the server due to another bug, but I reconnected fine after that one too. Have attached logs of the most recent successful game.

Will try again tomorrow and report findings, since I think a lot of people are having the same/similar bugs so it'd be good to finally get to the bottom of whats causing it.

Thanks for all your help so far,

Tommy

Just to clarify, the problem hasn't been properly solved since the 8 days In which I last posted, temporarily the game would join to the server, but if the host loses internet connection before closing the server, (booting everyone in the process) this for some reason seems to corrupt the install? I take all the previous steps and yet nothing has changed.

Going to keep posting new findings, since this thread seems to have been left in the dust? Not sure why.

Game boots, no problem with RAM usage, abg maybe < 1GB usage

Trying to join server? Game stops responding and THEN, RAM usage boosts gradually up to just over 5GB and then crashes. OR (this is why this is a weird bug, the outcomes aren't even consistent so its hard to replicate identically) game boots fine, tries to join server, sits at around 0.4GB RAM usage and then stops responding, but doesn't crash, it just holds and does nothing until you give in and close it.

Hello, Tommy!

Sorry to hear you're still experiencing the issue.

Could you share some additional information with us?

As you have mentioned, you aren't having any issues when playing single-player, so are you experiencing this issue when joining/playing on the said/particular server/lobby only, or also when joining/playing on other Lobby/DS or multiplayer servers too?

If you are having this issue with the particular lobby/server only, would it be possible for you to ask the server/lobby host for their log files and, if feasible, the world save and share those with us?

We are looking forward to assisting you with this issue.

Hi again!

Yes, so:

Singleplayer works fine in ALL instances, any world type etc, any mods, whatever. Singleplayer is cool and happy.

I've tested three other public (vanilla) servers and I was able to connect seamlessly on all occasions, even on high PCU servers, popular occupied servers, etc

After another unsuccessful connection, I began testing with just the host and I, he set up an empty world with the mods we used on the main server, just me and him, and I could join fine. We then tried a prebuilt world, went fine, then a high PCU world and that also went fine. (I'm writing this as we're testing) So he hosted the normal save file we'd usually play on and It turned out I could also connect fine. The next time the bug happens I will attach the logs from both of us as we stupidly cleared our logs earlier on.

Will continue poking around but the main suspect at the moment is joining the server whilst more than just the host are connected, as these seem to hold common for all the instances I've been able to connect successfully

TLDR I can connect to other hosted worlds, and it worked this time when I joined the host on his own rather than with 3 or 4 people connected.

Here are a set of log files from me, and a set of logs from the server host will follow

Thanks

Hello, Tommy!

Thank you for sharing the latest logs with us.

It seems there is an active Mod (MOD name: Expanded Settings) on the world you're playing, and your crash log still has the " Error creating buffer: SharpDX.SharpDXException: HRESULT: [0x887A0005]" issue. It is quite possible you're experiencing this issue because of the active MOD. Could you kindly remove the MOD or try to set up an unmodded (no active MOD) world save with your friend (as host) and try if you can join him?

If you still experience the issue, kindly send us your game/crash log, and if possible, share the server log (not the host's log) and the unmodded world's save file from the host on which you're experiencing the issue.

  • If the said server/game is a lobby, the host can access the world's saved files by typing %appdata% into the Windows search bar, and when redirected to the hidden Roaming folder, then just following: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. If the said server is a Dedicated Server, the host can find the world's saved files in the \Roaming\SpaceEngineersDedicated\Saves folder.
  • Please zip the file and attach it here. If you are having difficulty attaching files you can optionally use Google Drive. When sharing a google drive link please make sure it is set to be downloadable by anyone with the link.
  • If the said server/game is a lobby, the host can access the logs by typing %appdata% into the Windows search bar, and when redirected to the hidden Roaming folder, then just following: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers. If the said server is a Dedicated Server, the host can find the logs in the \Roaming\SpaceEngineersDedicated folder.

Hello, Engineer!

Because there is no new comment from you, and we are unable to reproduce the issue on our own, I will close this thread now as outdated.

If you or any other player will experience this issue again, please make a new thread and provide all needed info there.

Thank you for understanding.

Kind Regards
