Huge performance drop when turning on drills

Need More Information

Keen,

Very much enjoying your game but in a creative world I was designing a large mining platform and I noticed a lag spike that is intolerable. I've limited the number of conveyor junctions as per recommendations from many years ago. My PC should be able to handle this.

  1. One player, my PC. Not playing on a remote server.
  2. It is on the same period that ore is moved to containers
  3. If I turn off the drills, performance returns to normal.
  4. If I limit the number of drills, performance improves.
  5. Windows 10 PC
  6. 3080
  7. 32 G RAM
  8. Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  9. Creative world - Triton
  10. I made a video with OBS. Hopefully you can see it on youtube.

Not only is that a *lot* of drills but they're over a particularly wide area. That number of drills in a solid bloc might be sorta performant, but they way you're using them is nightmarish. On a 3.4ghz processor, I'm not surprised you're seeing performance impacts.

The specific hitch you're getting is every time the deformation from the drills happens. you might be able to mitigate this by turning the drills on in stages.

Hello Engineer,

Apologies for the delayed reply, and thank you for the detailed report and video – we really appreciate you taking the time to share this with us!

It looks like the number of drills used in your setup is quite large, and this can significantly affect performance. Each drill damaging terrain adds up quickly, especially on planets, and it's not unusual for this to cause a drop in FPS. We usually recommend keeping mining rigs a bit smaller to help maintain smoother performance.

If you're open to it, we'd be happy to take a closer look. Would you be able to upload your world save to the Steam Workshop (with visibility set to hidden) and share the link here? That way, we can inspect the specific grid and see if anything can be optimized — though we can’t promise any fixes right away.

Thanks again for reaching out, and happy engineering!

Kind Regards,

Ludmila Danilchenko

Head of Space Engineers QA Department
