Unknown Signals don't do anything after button press

Patrick Heney shared this bug 22 days ago
Investigating

Something is up with the Unknown Signals again. I'm only getting the initial message after pushing the button. No longer getting the "sorry you got nothing message" and definitely not getting the "you win a unicorn rifle" message.

To be clear, I don't mean they don't provide a skin. I mean they don't tell you anything. All I get is the message that "hey you pushed this button, you might get something," but then there's a second window that normally appears that either tells you what skin you got, or tells you that you got nothing. That second window stopped appearing.

It's been like this all day. It was like this while I was streaming Learning to Survive. It was like this while playing an Empty Star System game in SP. Nothing happens after you click "ok." I tried admin-teleporting to the signals. I tried flying to the signals in my suit. I even tried using a remote grid to go fetch the signals and bring them back to me.

This is the only message I get after pushing the button. After this, nothing happens at all.

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for reaching out to us on the forum.

We’ve checked on our side, and Strong/Unknown Signals do provide loot. Could you please confirm whether the Single Player world, Lobby, or Server where you're experiencing this issue has any MODs (or you have Plugins) active? It’s possible that MODs or Plugins may alter game settings and cause this behavior.

To verify, please ensure no plugins are active in your game and try the following steps;

Verify your game files in Steam

  • Right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file

  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Delete ShaderCache folder

  • Same access as SpaceEngineers.cfg

Once done, launch the game and start a new vanilla (unmodded) world. In the world’s Advanced Settings, make sure Unknown Signals are enabled and set the game mode to Survival. Once the unknown signals spawn, check whether they now provide loot. If the issue continues, please send us a screen recording/video showing the issue, the vanilla world save file, and the log files from the time the issue occurred.

  • You can access your save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. There should be a folder with your SteamID and your saves.
  • Please zip the file and attach it here. If you are having difficulty attaching files you can optionally use Google Drive. When sharing a google drive link please make sure it is set to be downloadable by anyone with the link.
  • You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Kind Regards,

The problem appears to have resolved itself.

However, to clarify

  • This issue was with the skins, not the loot inside the signals.
  • The signals did provide skins initially, then stopped for a period of several days (72 hours). From approximately Wednesday to Sunday (May 4).
  • I know there is a Steam cooldown for receiving skins, however the announcement for the event stated that the Steam cooldowns for getting skins had been reduced.
  • I tried in several different SP games, a hosted MP game, and in the Learning to Survive scenario that ships with the game.
  • I tried in games with mods, and in games without mods or plugins.
  • I had Unknown Signals enabled in all the games I tried.
  • I tried in multiple different saved games, as well as in brand new games I created.
  • I was receiving skins during the first ~24 hours of the event.

Over that past 3 or 4 days, I've gotten at least 20 that give no message at all, and maybe as much as 75% of the ones that do give a message result in "nothing special".

photo
2

Same here, all on a privately hosted server. Other server members have had similar symptoms

photo

Same bug. Suddenly started for me 2 days ago. I get the box saying 'try your luck...' and then neither X on the controller or using the mouse to progress achieves anything - nothing else appears.

This is a dupe of topic/47812-unknown-signals-dont-do-anything-after-button-press

I urge everyone in the community to search issues prior to creating new one, create the new one if there is something unique you have run into, and up-vote the oldest/most voted to ensure the issue gets attention. New entries only do not help get issues resolved.

I’m sorry I looked and couldn’t find that topic

I've played over 500 hours on version 1.205 and have never encountered this bug, but on version 1.206 it has occurred several times.

photo
1

I had that same problem as well, but when I looked in my Steam notifications, there was a new item (badger grinder or so) ;-) Can you check your notifications?

photo
1

Just wanted to add that I've also started the same thing about 2 days ago (I hadn't played since last week so not sure exactly when it started).

It is similar in that I'm on a multiplayer locally hosted world. I've been to perhaps 5-10 over the last couple of days. When I press the button the initial message appears, but then when I click OK I don't get any secondary message. I haven't received any skins through any of the button presses either.

What is interesting is other people who join the server and go to their Unknown Signals are still getting the second message and still receiving skins. It definitely looks like an issue specifically with my game, not the server.

photo

2AdaRynin, no, the last one I got came yesterday with an in-game notification. There were a few cases today but I didn't get anything. Anyway, I'll check in a day or two to make sure something actually arrived.

photo
2

I've had no Steam notifications to tell me I received an item since this bug showed up, but before that due to the skin event I was getting a skin 100% of the time. We all hit a wall - it was very sudden which makes me believe a counter is no longer being reset correctly.

photo
1

I'm still getting skins occasionally, but no confirmation message after hitting "OK." It also doesn't give the little triangle on the character option in the main menu. But Steam gives me an alert that I got a skin. Definitely seem to be getting them less often than last week, even allowing for the weekly limit that stopped me from getting anything at all for 2 entire days.

photo
1

yeah, it's here

photo
1

Most of the time I get no dialog box. maybe 1 out of 10 I'll get the first, and 1 out of twenty I'll get both. Great use of my time during the Great Skin Hunt.

photo
1

Nothing happens, not even a message saying you got nothing...

photo
1

I get the message 'You got nothing' sometimes, but not the one to say I got something. I did get badger stuff today that showed up in my steam inventory, but I didn't see any duplicates in my inventory when I got in the medical thingy where you change your skin choices.

Hello engineers,

We’ve just released a new hotfix for Space Engineers and would like to know if you are still experiencing this issue after updating to the latest version?

If the issue persists, we would greatly appreciate it if you could confirm whether the world, lobby, or server where this occurred is modded (using any mods). If MODs are active, please try checking if the issue still happens in a new vanilla (unmodded) world or server.

If the issue continues even in an unmodded world/server, we kindly ask you to share with us the log file from the time the issue occurred, along with a screen recording/video showing the issue, and the save file of the vanilla world or server where it happened.

  • You can access your SP/Lobby world (if you're host) save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. There should be a folder with your SteamID and your saves. Dedicated Server save files can be found in the AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineersDedicated\Saves folder.
The Dedicated Server logs can be found in the AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineersDedicated folder.

Additionally, if you could provide any extra information, such as whether the Steam overlay was enabled or if a VPN was in use when this issue occurred, it would be much appreciated, as it could help us identify contributing factors.

Kind Regards,

Keen Software House: QA Department

Still not getting a message half the time. When I do, it's to say I haven't got anything. A few minutes ago I didn't get a message but Steam said I got a drop; when I checked my skin inventory, the item was not there. This was on a brand new vanilla save that I created just to test (copy-pasted a signal for expediency).

I AM using a VPN through Bitdefender. Not sure what you mean by "enabled" regarding the Steam overlay - I have the ability to turn it on, but of course couldn't interact with the unknown signal if it were active.

Likely not relevant to this issue, but just in case: there is something hinky with my particular copy of SE as I can't see friend's servers in the Join panel and they can't see mine.

photo
1

Just noticed something interesting in my Steam inventory. The supposed new drops are showing as duplicates in a different way than they used to. Previously, every individual item showed separately in my Steam inventory, even if I had 5 of them. Now, however, the new items are stacking - my Policeman boots now have a little number 2 under them to indicate a duplicate, instead of there being 2 individual instances of it.

photo
1

I haven't managed to check on a un-moded world just yet. It is still happening in my moded world however.

I'm pretty sure copy pasted signals never give you a skin reward regardless of what you do so that part isn't surprising.

photo
1

Copy-pasted signals totally do give rewards, normally

photo
1

FR? I tested this extensively when they were added to the game and copied signals would not give out rewards and never tried again.

I just figured at the time it made sense, since it was steam rewards that tied into the marketplace there would be a unique ID generated with signal spawn to prevent system gaming which is why you need an internet connection for signals to spawn.

I have never successfully received a reward from a copied signal but I guess I was either extremely unlucky or something has changed.

photo
1

I've never managed to get a copy/pasted signal to provide a Steam reward either. I also figured that was by design.

photo
1

I've been doing it for a few months now. Given how terrible the drop rate usually is, and the fact I only play multiplayer at most once a week, it was a nice way to improve my collection. It only stopped working a few days ago with this new bug.

photo
1

Is it only the strong unknown signals you're copying or regular unknown signals? I don't do multiplayer so I've never interacted with a strong unknown signal but maybe because they are server wide (rather than player specific like regular unknown signals) they are handled differently by the system?

photo
1

3 unknown signals checked, no final message dialogs

EDIT: i closed the game and steam said "you got a crocodile helmet".

photo
1

Problem persists.

Have you perhaps underestimated the load experienced during the event? My game freezes for a millisecond when I 'try my luck' so the program is definitely attempting something.

photo
1

New game, 1 unknown signal, no second screen to say I'd got anything. Went to Steam, it says I got a 2nd leopard drill. Doesn't show as duplicate in medbay changing room.

photo
1

New world I started on 1.206, 5 unknown signals:

- no second message,

- empty,

- empty,

- no second message,

- wood helmet.

photo
1

@Allison M I would love to know how you're copying signals and getting rewards because here is about half of what I tried today without a single skin which is consistent with all testing I've done in the past. Again though, these are just regular unknown signals from single player, not strong unknown signals.a84727402cc41d28490421d3797ccbc6

photo
1

@James I am indeed using a Strong Unknown Signal. That said, there are other factors to consider. For starters, there is a minimum play time (not sure exactly how long) before a signal will give you anything, which makes copy-pasted regular signals a bit of a waste anyway unless you're spending hours building in creative mode. There is also the cooldown between signals, of course. And, I hope obviously, you must copy the signal before you've used it or it won't work.

Honestly, though, with the current bugginess of all signals, now really isn't the time to be testing anything. My weekly cooldown theoretically reset on Friday night, but I wasn't able to get any drops, even to my Steam inventory, all of Sunday/Monday.

photo
1

@Allison Interesting! So it's all timer based rather than steam ID based... Warrants further experimentation. Thanks!

photo
1

I use a modded world, with many base game variables set the way I want them and Eat, Sleep, Repeat - which modifies Unknown Signal cargo to include food and drink. It's never borked the unknown signals before but with the event occurring I am starting to wonder.

Secondly, items randomly appearing in the Steam Inventory but not in the game - and seemingly massively out of sync with the game (no unlocked items have appeared in game since day 2 of the event) flags this as a major coding fail on your end and I do not see how a mod could break the signals like this for so many people - are we all using the same particular mod that breaks this?

It should have been tested properly before release number one, and number two what are you going to do to reimburse players for the (not small) amounts of time they've wasted focusing on the unknown signals so far?

photo
photo
1

I will add to the list, tested brand new world no mods/survival default settings, steam overlay enabled. The problem persists. The pod lands I hit "F" to interact and get the first message - clicking LMB, or Enter on the message results in no additional message. Occasionally steam inventory will indicate that I received a new skin, but the skin does not show in the in-game inventory as available.

photo
1

tested again today, and the problem still persists. Sometimes you get the response most of the time you don't and when you do get lucky and receive a skin it does not show up in game. It does show up in the Steam inventory but not in game.

Post 1.206.032 update:

1 x rare

1 x Common

2 x no message

1 x nothing special

Seems better, but still broken.

photo
1

Still an issue in Hotfix 1.206.032

photo
2

I received leopard drill, leopard gloves, rainbow gloves, rainbow drill - all of which eventually showed up in my Steam inventory but none of which are in the game to be recycled.

Modifying my initial thought that it is a counter issue because it seems more like a validation issue.

photo
2

Yeah, my Steam Inventory bears little resemblance to my in-game inventory.

photo
1

Given the number of signals I activated, four items also doesn't seem even close to what I should have found.

photo
1

@Lady Moonweb that depends on how far apart those signals were. There are a number of different cooldowns that affect how often you can get skin drops, even when the signals are working correctly.

photo
1

Four items in a week of opening them.

We all know there is a cooldown, this is something else.

photo
photo
1

There seems to be two submissions with exactly the same statement and votes - weird. That being said tested again today and the problem still persists. Perhaps it is a Steam sync issue, because again I get new items in my steam inventory but nothing in the medbay recolor inventory.

photo
1

They were merged by Keen.

photo
1

Yep. I can't remove it.

i think this is realated to acounts, i have my acont and wife's account, on my acount i dont get anything but on my wife's account i get Skins

photo
1

I disagree. Sometimes I'm getting multiple skins per day, but most days it's no message and "nothing special".

photo
photo
2

I've gotten no messages or skins since the beginning of May. I started a completely mod-free world to see if it was mods causing the problem, but no messages or skins.

photo
2

I also get notified on Steam when I receive a skin, but it doesn't show up in-game for me to equip or recycle. However, I have noticed that this only happens when I already own the skin. I've yet to receive a skin on Steam, but not in-game, that isn't a duplicate. After looking at my Steam inventory, I have 1-4 duplicates of most of the common skins and only one uncommon. I've played a lot of Space Engineers recently, but not to the point where I should have so many. Not sure when this started, but it was definitely before the skin event began. I just recently started playing again, but I remember encountering this problem before, so that's probably where all my extra skins came from.

photo
1

hmmm, very interesting I hadn't noticed that. This would indicate that the issue is tied to the new way Steam is stacking inventory items. They used to list each item separately, now they indicate duplicate items by stacking them and placing an inventory amount number below the item. Dev's something to look at for sure.

photo
1

Interesting observation.

Today I opened steam and found another three skins in the inventory (which I already own) and nothing in the game.

photo
1

Ok, so I figured out that if you recycle one of your duplicate items, it will be removed from the Steam inventory, but you still keep one in-game, so nothing has really changed except you can't see your duplicate items in-game. I tested this from the main menu, but I assume it still works from the med bay. Also, I didn't test what would happen if you sell a duplicate item on the marketplace, but I assume it would still work, but don't quote me on that. You can still buy new items using your recycle credits, but if it's a duplicate, it gets really buggy, so be careful. I bought a duplicate newspaper welder using recycle credits, and it actually appeared in-game, but I had a lot of trouble recycling it. Eventually, I was able to recycle it, but the game was not happy about it lol. Hope this helps!

hello!

i noticed that in some cases the button is acting like there is no function is set up when the player presses it. i mean for the regular buttons of such containers the player is not prompted to set it after it has, or has not got anything from the container, but for some containers it prompts the player to set up an action for the button

photo
1

That's a deliberate trap... look again, they have another button ;)

photo
photo
1

i am not geting anithing, i went to 15 strong uknow signals and i dont get anything

photo
1

Yesterday I tried unknown signals and I did get one new item from them (in game) - an item I did not already have. It seems unlikely to me that I've only found one new skin item given the supposed 'event' (Is pharaoh armour even out there? At all? I've never seen even one piece of it in 4,100 hours) but there it is. It worked, and both message boxes and skin acquisition went off smoothly. It's not completely broken but may be broken in the normal case and only works for new items?

photo
1

Yay! I got a new item..... but also had 2 x 'nothing to see here' and one told me nothing at all.

Maybe it's just the duplicates that aren't giving the response?

photo
1

I am still getting new items added to Steam Inventory, but no notification and they are not available in game. I know the Dev's are working on it, but I am missing being able to recycle all these duplicates. They literally just had a live stream stating how wonderful this event is, but I haven't been able to take advantage of it as a single player - don't mind me I am just blowing off steam.

photo
1

5 visits to 'unknown signals today.

1. No notification, nothing in steam

2. New item, Showed in steam

3. No notifictation, Nothing in steam

4. No notification, duplicate item appeared in steam

5. 'did not find anything'.

photo
1

Still running into the same issue.

-No mods

-No Plugins

Tested Today again in both SP & MP, have not tried Server side.

No second window appears.

photo
1

I am still not getting the second notification, but the way it seems to be working at this point is:

-Second notification rarely occurs, if it does it is usually to inform me "better luck next time" but occasionally it will be a new skin

-when I don't get a notification, I check my steam inventory (via Steam Overlay) if I received a new skin I will have a steam notification.

-duplicate items will show in-game, but as having one duplicate

-if I recycle an item that I know I have multiple duplicates of it will be removed from the in-game inventory and my steam inventory

-the in-game inventory will again show that I have a single duplicate.

I don't think this is how it was intended, and the player must use caution to be sure they have selected/checked the "duplicate only" box or a wanted item could be deleted.
