"Improved spatial audio for 5.1 and 7.1 setups" Is broken after the major Fieldwork Update

Investigating

Ever since the fieldwork update was released I have notice that the sound engine appears to be broken, I have tried validating the game and even reinstalling it, however the engine still has issues.

Symptoms of the bug include the audio engine thinking that the players front is behind them causing you to hear audio from blocks more if you turn away from them.

I very much hope you can fix this issue soon.

I can confirm this is true, if you are looking at the jukebox or any other source of sound you hardly hear it, or only in 1 ear, when you turn around it plays in both ears and very loud.

Was just coming to the forums to post about this.

The front and back audio input for the engineer seems to be flipped.

So if something loud is behind me (grinder, refinery, assembler) it is extremely loud but if I turn and face it, it muffles as if I am facing away. The sound if correctly mapped, so will follow my 'head' movements but it's just as if my ears face backwards.

Hello Engineers,

We’re currently investigating several reports related to in-game sound behavior and would appreciate your help in gathering more information. To assist us in identifying and resolving the issue, please provide the following details:

Audio Setup

  • Headset or speaker make and model
  • Connection type: USB, 3.5mm Jack, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HDMI, or Optical
  • Operating System (e.g., Windows 10 or 11)

Sound Configuration

  • Default audio output device selected in Windows (found under Control Panel > Sound > Playback tab)
  • Speaker configuration: Stereo, 5.1 Surround, or 7.1 Surround (found in Speaker Setup)

In-Game Context

  • What were you doing in-game when the issue occurred? (e.g., inside a ship, flying, listening to the jukebox, etc.)
  • Did the issue start after a specific update? If so, which one?

Required

  • Log files from the game session where the issue occurred
To access your log files, type %appdata% into your Windows search bar to open the hidden Roaming folder. Then navigate to:
    \Roaming\SpaceEngineers

Optional (but appreciated)

  • A short video with sound enabled demonstrating the issue, if possible

Thank you for taking the time to support this investigation — your input helps us identify and fix these issues more effectively.

Best Regards

Just leaving an update, as this issue is still occurring.

Audio Setup

  • Headset or speaker make and model - Sennheiser HD215
  • Connection type: USB, 3.5mm Jack, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HDMI, or Optical - 3.5mm Jack
  • Operating System (e.g., Windows 10 or 11) - Windows 11

Sound Configuration

  • Default audio output device selected in Windows (found under Control Panel > Sound > Playback tab) - Realtek HD Audio 2nd output
  • Speaker configuration: Stereo, 5.1 Surround, or 7.1 Surround (found in Speaker Setup) - 2 channels, 24 but, 48000 Hz (Studio Quality)

In-Game Context

  • What were you doing in-game when the issue occurred? (e.g., inside a ship, flying, listening to the jukebox, etc.) - Everything essentially. Jason Lewis' Video shows exactly the issue I'm having but it is not limited to those blocks.
  • Did the issue start after a specific update? If so, which one? - Not sure, just been happening at least the last 3 to 4 months.

Required

  • Log files from the game session where the issue occurred
To access your log files, type %appdata% into your Windows search bar to open the hidden Roaming folder. Then navigate to:
\Roaming\SpaceEngineers - No logs, as there is no crash. It happens on all saves, vanilla, or modded.

Optional (but appreciated)

  • A short video with sound enabled demonstrating the issue, if possible - Jason Lewis' video illustrates the issue, a video from me would show the same.
