[1.201.013] Dedicated Server unable to download some mods

Dalten shared this bug 22 months ago
Solved

Hello Laura,

As of last night, dedicated server on windows could not start up, with 8 of the following mods on our list failing a download check from the steam workshop. see attached for full list. This is happening on two separate servers. been trying a couple times since, including an hour ago.

below are the failed mods from the list. None of these mods are banned on steam workshop, mod pages are all available. please let me know what other info you need.

Another server admin confirmed this happening on his vanilla DS instance, but not his torch instance. is there a steam API update required by vanilla dedicated server? this has happened before.

solution found. keen you will need to hotfix 6 steam dll's in the DedicatedServer64 folder. In an updated copy of SteamCMD "C:\steamcmd\steamapps" in my case, the 6 dll's below need to be copied into the DedicatedServer64 directory, overwriting the older files.

steamclient.dll

steamclient64.dll

tier0_s.dll

tier0_s64.dll

vstdlib_s.dll

vstdlib_s64.dll

Thanks Nevcairiel for the workaround.

Just made an account to thank you @Dalten!

This worked 100%;

Dedicated server 1.201.013 downloaded from Steam Client wouldn't download mods with k_EResultFail;

also made an account just to say thanks!

This just got my server working again too! pls update keen!!

For anyone that might still be stuck on this problem: at first, I was not able to locate the right dlls. In the end, I got the right dlls from the Torch API (https://torchapi.com/). If you run it the first time it will download the correct dlls into its own folder. Copying these into the Keen SE dedicated server client (at DedicatedServer64) fixes the problem

photo
2

"Right dlls." are located where SteamClient is installed also. That's where I copied mine from.

photo

Thanks for reporting this Dalten. Can confirm that this workaround worked for me also.

I copied the six .dll files from (C:) > Program Files (x86) > Steam

It worked. The community is better than the developers, as always.

Thank you.

Well, good luck with those fifty votes to get your "feedback" seen.

LMAO. This reddit-style system is idiotic for a support forums.

anyway keen, you need to patch your steamapi files. easy fix, just do it.

See, that's why there's the Submit bug option. To submit bugs. Not feedback. Which is submitted using Submit feedback. Which you used. To submit a bug. Instead of Submit bug. Which you should have used. But didn't.

Hello, Dalten!

Sorry to hear you experienced this issue. I appreciate you have found a workaround but do you have any way to re-test this without the workaround? I ask because neither myself nor my colleague can reproduce the issue with the named mods. These will download for us without issue. If you are able to test this again and let us know how you get on. If it is still an issue, could you supply the world file?

  • You can access your save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. There should be a folder with your SteamID and your saves.
  • Please zip the file and attach it here. If you are having difficulty attaching files you can optionally use Google Drive. When sharing a google drive link please make sure it is set to be downloadable by anyone with the link.

Kind Regards

Hello Laura,

The issue takes place outside of the world files, so I do not need to provide a save. there are Steam API DLL files provided by Valve to Keen so that your software can connect properly to Workshop. these files must be kept up to date by your developers, so please make sure they include the latest compatible files in the server software directory.

photo
1

Hello, Dalten!

Thank you for clarifying. Could you please provide steps for me to reproduce the issue? I'm not quite sure I understand the issue you are experiencing. Without these, we will not be able to report this internally. :)

I posted a new update to this thread, when I was having the same problem but the workaround no longer seems to be working for me and others. I mention it because I've also posted some information that might clarify some things for you all in testing and explain potential differences in how we are hosting our server vs how you all are doing so, which could be the missing link on why you're struggling to reproduce this.

Of note in my recent post is that It's the dedicated server solution and not hosting directly through the game, and at least in my case I'm not logging into Steam to host and have been using the default/anonymous login - which has previously worked for me in the past, so I know that's not exclusively the problem.

Also, if others having this issue reading this thread could upvote the main topic to help keep visibility on this critical issue that I'm sure many, many more than which are responding in here are having, that would be very much appreciated and important to getting a fix for this issue which has been recurring in some form or another for the last two years.

photo
photo
2

The steps to reproduce are detailed above. When a server has the six outdated dll files installed the issue occurs. The problem is rectified by Keen providing these six updated dll files in the dedicated server installation package, which is then deployed through steamCMD by player admins. The 60l files must be placed in the dedicatedserver64 directory alongside the other server binary and library files.

Hey,

I hoping right into the problem. See Attached the logfile from my server. All the mod downloads fail und my server is down. Without mods the Server runs instantly.

Greetings

Hello Kristian. I have got exactly the same issue.

If you run server with Torch it works with all mods.

Hello, Engineers!

Thank you for the information. Due to Kristian's log, I have managed to reproduce the issue and have reported this internally.

Any update? More mods that need updates are failing to do so and leading to instability.

Any udpdates?

Fresh new install using steamcmd or steam client nod diference. When first run default instance, can't start server at all. Had to remove instance and create new one. Then I'm able to start fresh server till I will start to add some mods.

Steam->Login is doing nothing. Logout is still grey.

Any update on when this issue will be fixed? We have a gportal server and cannot download any mods at all due to this issue. :(

photo

I'm in the same situation, bad time to pay money for something you cant use the way you want.

photo
1

It feels like when Keen needs money, they'll come out with a lot of updates/new content then they wash their hands of it until they need more money. Before they came out with the recent content, they did hardly anything with the game for years. Which is sad because SE is a great game.

photo
photo

I already gave keen the solution to this issue and how to source the updated files from steam directly. Keen needs to keep these dll files up to date as they release game updates.

photo

Your solution didn't work for me. I updated DLLs files following your instructions, but it didn't help.

I installed TORCH and move my saves and server is up.

This post should be stickied. Worked for me after trying other things.

Just a reminder to everyone to pay attention. Remember to update files in the DedicatedServer64 folder instead of SpaceEngineersDedicatedServer. I made that mistake first.

photo
photo

Downloading a new DS the updated and correct DLL's can be found under steamapps\common\SpaceEngineersDedicatedServer

My guess is they updated them correctly just placed them in the wrong folder. Copy the following files from SpaceEngineersDedicatedServer to SpaceEngineersDedicatedServer\DedicatedServer64 and it will work.

steamclient.dll

steamclient64.dll

tier0_s.dll

tier0_s64.dll

vstdlib_s.dll

vstdlib_s64.dll

Hi,

I got the same issue,

but copy the DLL as suggested won't fix it for me

is there anything else that can be done?

Solved

follow Yarr man Answer

on 64bit server - verify that the files replaced in the "DedicatedServer\DedicatedServer64"

and not the root folder

thanks for the fix

Hello everyone,

before doing this, please be sure to keep your steamcmd installation up to date. look up the update command for it. as of this writing, the DLL files were last updated by Valve on 7/28/2022.

photo
1

This thread is about 40 days old, and I've just encountered the problem with the latest build of the dedicated server (1.201.013), and the workaround of copying the .DLL's from the steam library worked.

If this is a recurring problem, can I suggest the installed steam path be added to the dedicated server's execution path, and the DLL's be removed from the Dedicated Server directory, so it can use them directly from the steam install path?

photo
1

How is the fix exactly applied?

photo
photo
1

It is a sign of incredible incompetence that Keen is not able to fix a simple yet critical bug that prevents the server software from running within 4 month.

photo
1

What are you all ranting for again?

I had this problem 2 months ago, used the workaround and still working fine.

I just tried to delete all the Space Engineers Dedicater Server folder and re-download with steamcmd.

DLL are automatically downloaded in the folder and all is working fine, my server is up again.

If you rant randomly without thinking you'll never fix the problem.

Download the latest steamcmd (https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD), redownload the Space Engineers Dedicated Server with the related command and voila'.

Also, if the STEAMcmd is not downloading the DLLs, it's a STEAM problem, not Keen's problem.

I never wanted to defend Keen, but ffs use your brain for once...

photo
1

So is the workaround you described entirely just reinstalling both programs? Or is there another step i'm missing, for context I am extremely new to hosting dedicated servers in general.

photo
1

Again as 2022-10-07... downloaded the DS from steam, copy all file from the SpaceEngineersDedicatedServer to DedicatedServer64, still have the issue mods wont download say failed at 2/3 of them restart and redo all the same thing again.

photo
1

As I said 7 days ago I re-downloaded steamcmd.exe, I deleted the dedicated server folder (the one with the executable loaded, not the server config and saves) and re-downloaded the dedicated server with the same command.

No issue detected, the problem is solved, my server goes up and it download the mods.

photo
1

downloaded it from steamcmd same thing mods failed to download..

''error during download:FAIL''

photo
1

I don't know what to say, I deleted the "old" steamcmd folder + space eng dedicated server, re-downloaded the steamcmd.exe, used the command and all is working fine for me. Maybe you didn't delete all the folders? (leave the config and save folders and files of your game)

Use the workaround in the first comment and you'll be ok, I did that a couple of months ago when I had this issue and it worked, you just need to copy the DDLs.

photo
1

Which DDLs specifically?

photo
2

I can confirm that doing a fresh install from Steam will have the issue described. Without the user fixing the installation the server will not be able to download mods.

photo
1

what did you did to fix it ?

photo
1

Finally figured it out, I had to reinstall it and on the official Keen discord they have the specific DLLs but I'll vaguely describe the solution. So where ever you have your Dedicated server installed go there and you should see a few files and a few DLLs, the ones specifically that you'd be looking for are steamclient64.ddl then tier0_s64.dll and finally vstdlib_s64.dll. Copy each of these one by one then paste them into the file labeled DedicatedServer64. For each of them it'll ask you if you want to replace the existing files there, say yes and do the same with the rest. And atleast in my situation it worked perfectly fine. If theres other issues I don't have too much knowledge on this so I don't believe I'd be able to help.

photo
1

You're right, I tried to re-download all again like I did some days ago (and deleting all files and folders except for the saves and cfg) and now it's not working anymore.

Anyway just copying the DLLs solve the problem, you'll never have a fix from Keen so deal with it.

Hello,

I am trying to return to the game with some friends who I've finally convinced to give the game a shot. I told them I would let them know that I have a working server up and running, and then they could go ahead and buy the game (for the ones that don't already have it) and we could finally get our gaming on. '

Then rather frustratingly and unfortunately, I've ran into this issue while trying to get a DEDICATED server going for us, and it's preventing me from being able to host us a server with mods, and as an aside is costing you sales because they aren't interested in playing the game without mods due to lack of combat and other features, and was one of the selling points to even get them to try the game in the first place.

Here is what I've found and tried. I updated and validated the Space Engineers "Dedicated Server" package through the Steamcmd utility with these two commands:

login anonymous

app_update 298740 validate +quit

After it updated and validated successfully, then when I tried to launch my old server I had, it failed to update and launch with mods. I've seen this before and last time, the DLL swap fix mentioned above was exactly what I needed to bypass the issue. Though as of this time, by replacing the appropriate DLL files mentioned above in the C:\steamcmd\steamapps\common\SpaceEngineersDedicatedServer\DedicatedServer64 directory has not worked for me this time.

This time I tried to make a new server instance and to only add a single mod to it: https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=758597413 -- I tried adding this single mod, which is a dependency for several other mods. I figured if I could get anything to load, it would be this. It also would not connect to the Steam Workshop and download the mod for the server, and just failed out like my previous established world's attempt at launching.

Out of curiosity, I tried installing the Steam Client itself, to see if there was some other dependency issue going on that might be magically resolved by having it installed, but OF NOTE... I did NOT log into Steam with my steam account, as I'm hosting this remotely on another machine where others could potentially access it. This dedicated server instance is being launched (presumably) under the anonymous or local account, when it comes to running it and thus provides whatever those default credentials would be to the steam workshop and store. Logging in with my personal Steam account on this machine is a NO GO for me, and hosting it in this exact manner has worked for me previously before, so I know it's possible.

Finally, here is the console output from the dedicated server after it failed to run with mods. It did work successfully with a fresh instance without any mods, also of note. But anyway - output was as follows for the failed mod attempt:

Finally, I went and found the workshop.log file and it was saying that it failed due to an access denied event. There was a lot of log events, but here is one of the failures from when I tried with mods.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this information has been enough. To summarize, dedicated server was installed via steamcmd with anonymous login and validated through the steamcmd utility. Hosting like this in the past has worked for our standalone dedicated server, not started through the actual game itself.

Tried a non-modded world after mods failed, that worked. After that worked, I then tried to replace the DLL's as mentioned in several of the posts above in the correct directory and even the root directory for good measure, which did not work. I then installed Steam client, but did not log into it due to shared nature of the machine, and then finally tried to run a new instance with just one mod and a few mods, trying different mods. Nothing was working, there was no connection and updating, and logs seem to indicate that there was an access denied event from the steam workshop to do so.

Not to whine, but this is frustrating and really killing my will to play the game and has been a big blow as I had finally convinced some friends to give it a chance, and now I can't even properly run a server for us to play on and we'll be moving on in the meantime to something else until you can come up with an acceptable fix and this stops being a recurring issue.

It's still not fixed, really? Well, atleast copypaste workaround works.

Hello, Engineers,

I'm happy to announce that this issue is already fixed in the new version 202.

I will close this thread now as solved.

Kind Regards

Yesss!!

This latest update helped a lot. Revealed that I was having a secondary issue on top of needing to replace dll's that wasn't obvious with those two problems combined. But now with that secondary issue fixed, I'm able to run and load mods on the latest dedicated server build without having to do any tricks or workarounds!

Sorry to bump a solved thread, but just wanted to say a big thank you all to the devs and all involved in getting this fixed - this will save a lot of people a lot of grief and make it easier for people to play with their friends and benefits everyone, so I'm happy and excited to see this was addressed.
