Drill not Drilling

CookeRS shared this bug 3 years ago
Solved

I've recorded the issue here.

https://youtu.be/AhEeJQcxxOw

One of the drills on my ship does not drill. It spins, make audio and visual effects, but does not actually dent the ore, or collect any ore.

The second drill on the ship has no issue though!...

I have tried repasting the grid, and grinding down the drills and rebuilding them to no avail.

Hello,

I have not been able to reproduce the issue. Is it in the SP or on DS? Please, can you upload a world or blueprint to reproduce the issue better?

Thank you very much for your feedback and have a nice day :-)

Has this bug been fixed ?

Just found out it is in a mod. I think it is space just got cleare but by Vanilla gameplay I dont have the issue.

Just created a new game with mods and had the issue again then removed all mods and issue is gone.

Correction it looks to be the mod build vision can this be the issue ?

Is automatic voxel reset without voxel material reset active in your world? Because that's triggering the issue for me on Keen servers and singleplayer with mods.

I've been able to reproduce this bug. What I do is the following:

Step 1: Start the game. I don't mean just merely going back to the main menu. Completely exit and start the game if it is already running.

Step 1: Find a boulder

Step 2: Spawn a mining ship (I'm using the rover from Sparks of the Future)

Step 3: At this point, you should be able to mine the boulder just fine.

Step 4: Save the game

Step 5: Press F5 to do a quick load.

Step 6: Attempt to mine the boulder. At this point, mining the boulder does not work.

Step 7: Attempt to mine planet voxels. This should work just fine.

photo

Note: I'm in the ship when I do the quick load. I'm wondering if this could be part of it. It's notable that the drill icon is greyed out and just refuses to either select the drill as a "weapon" or release it.

A few other notes, observations, comments and questions:

- Once this bug shows up, it persists through reloads. From my perspective, this makes it clear that there are variables that are not reset between game reloads. A full exit and restart of the game is required in order to get this issue to go away. Edit: Once the bug shows up, it persists through quick-loads done using F5. Going back to the main menu and using the steps described at the start of the last paragraph works fine.

- As other posters have noted, planet voxels are not affected by this bug. What is it that differentiates planet voxels from those boulders? Is the problem caused by the fact that they overlap?

- The drills are on hinges. I'll try later to see if I can reproduce this bug with a ship that does not have a hinge. As stated above, I'm using the miner from sparks of the future found in the engineering section.

- I think I can safely eliminate reload as a cause given that I can produce the bug without needing to reload the game.

- I've found a way to avoid the bug, and more importantly, I can trigger the bug at will without needing the game reload mentioned in the above method. I think this gives an important clue about what is going on here. On that specific miner that I'm using, the drill is on bar 2 slot 9 while bar 1 slot 9 is occupied by the gyro you would use if you "accidentally" flipped the miner. I changed that for the lights after doing a right click and activating the gyro one too many times after getting into the miner. When I get into the miner, slot 9 is grey. My understanding is that this is an indication that it is selected. On bar 1, slot 8 is empty. If I use the empty slot 8 and then switch to bar 2 and press 9 to select the drill, everything works as expected. I think that the is triggered by the fact that slot 9 is selected when I get into the vehicle. If I don't clear that first and instead do a left click after getting into the miner, the lights will turn on or off. If I then go to bar 2 and attempt to use the drill, I do not get a message, or an activation of the drills, but I do see the icon responding to my click. If I then clear the "selection" through the method mentioned above and then attempt to mine, I'm stuck in the "bugged" state.

photo

Using a ship that does not have a hinge, the pattern changes a bit. I've reproduced some of the conditions while failing to reproduce others. I used a similar setup, putting a light on bar 1, and the drill on bar 2.

- On game load, the slot is grey as if it is selected, just like with the sparks miner.

- Doing a left click turns on or off the light just like the sparks miner.

- Changing to bar 2 and attempting to use the drill does show a message and the drill icon responds to my click, but attempting to use the drill yields nothing. This follows the same pattern as the sparks miner.

- If I then clear the selection, and then attempt to use the drills, unlike the sparks miner, the bugged state is cleared and I can mine normally.

I got the same issue, also note the hand drill is not an issue I only have it with a small drill at this moment. trying to mine rocks (iron or others) and it won't mine. another note is that I also had the issue that it first did mine a rock and when I came back the next day it didn't mine the same rock anymore but the hand drill did. this issue is new for me since the last update. also a lot of lag (in single mode)

Trying to drill small surface rocks with small ship drill not working.

photo

I don't know if there's two issues involved here. I've seen it on Keen official as well as local game: The default material from voxel cleanup cannot be drilled. Can verify this bug for asteroids and large grid drill. The hand drill still works on those voxels.

photo

So I figured out something, Im having the same issue and I tried to mine a Boulder to no avail, sparks and everything but no dents or ore received. However, when moving 10 meters over and mining the ground it worked perfectly fine. I also tried mining open the boulder with a hand drill to expose the ore to the drill, this actually Worked!!! I could even mine the stone inside too. So I think the problem has to be with the Boulders outer mesh or something. Its the outside that's the problem.

photo

Sounds like I have the same issue. I am not using any mods. I loaded an old save, jumped in a ship with a drill, tried to drill a boulder, nothing broken off the boulder and collected. Hand drill works.

Moved around the boulder and was able to drill a bit. Saved, Loaded, cannot drill anywhere around the boulder.

What does support need? I can send them a save or if they provide instructions I can send them other things. Not being able to drill boulders is removing significant gameplay.

I have a very similar problem. I started experiencing it in a heavily modded world after the Sparks of the Future update, but now I've tested it in a fresh new world without any mods and it happened immediately as well. When using grid drills, I cannot seem to be able to mine boulder voxels and planet voxels at the same game load.

It happened to me several times that I got to a boulder and the grid drills wouldn't dent it at all, left or right click. After reloading the game, it often gets fixed, but then I cannot mine the planet voxels with the grid drills. It seems the game randomly decides which voxel type it will allow me to drill on game load or something.

My system: Win10 Pro 64bit, MSI B450 Gaming Carbon Pro AC motherboard, Ryzen 2600, Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB - MSI Armor OC

Here is a link to the Steam Workshop item, which is the fresh new world where I experienced the bug, including the vehicle I used to test it with. It's survival.

Thanks for any help.

I'm having the same issue. Mine above ground boulders on a sp, offline, no mods game and they work sometimes but not others. I have experienced it with a single small mining drill where it doesn't work and I reload the game several times and it'll start working. I have also made a huge 9 large drill miner and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. For example last night I'm mining and all of the drills work except the 9th one. If I let it keep mining it explodes.

Like I said I'm on what I would consider the most basic game playable. No mods, offline, Star System World. I've already invested hours into this game and I plan on spending months building a massive world just to kill time. I need this to work or I'll have to stop playing.

I should also say that I uninstalled and reinstalled the game thinking it might be the files. I also did the file integrity check through Steam.

I'm having the same issue. Been going on for about a month now. Small grid mining ship with 2 drills. One will work fine an the other does nothing. Weirdly it's always the drill on the immediate right of the cockpit that works. I've tried removing both and rebuilding just the drill on the left and it still does nothing. If I add 2 drills to the right then only the drill right next to the cockpit works.

I have also noticed on my large grid drill platform with about 10 drills that occasionally some of them stop drilling. A restart of the game sometimes fixes the large grid drills for awhile, but it hasn't fixed the small grid ship.

All mods removed.

photo

Had this happen again. Single drill small ship. Saving/Reloading fixes the issue.

photo

I'm confirming that this issue still exists. It seems to only happen to surface boulders that spawn at the beginning of a world. Ground mining/boring still works with 2 (multiple) drills, but with boulders, only one drill actually drills, the other spins, makes audio, makes particle effects but does no damage to rock/ore voxels.

Saving and loading (even from main menu) seems to fix it. Haven't tried other boulders in other biomes/areas.

I have the same bug. (with or without mods)

I had a drilling rig, that gets this problem very often. (every 10 to 20 minutes)

But I found a workaround:

I put every drill on a advanced rotor. So, that every drill is on its own subgrid.

This is working for weeks now. The bug did not occure since this change.

Hello Daniel!

I appreciate you've found a workaround for this. Do you happen to have a blueprint for the original issue at all to help me reproduce this? (Or anyone else at all!)

I have got similar issue. All drills on my world just mine stone in ground, but when I want to mine ores it doesnt work. Visual and sound effects are same but it doesnt drill the ores. And this is happening with all my drills. (On the Earth)

I hope this link will work:

Hello Jonathon!

Are you able to provide a copy of your save that is having the issue?

  • You can access your save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. There should be a folder with your SteamID and your saves.

Please zip the file and attach it here. If you are having difficulty attaching files you can optionally use Google Drive. When sharing a google drive link please make sure it is set to be downloadable by anyone with the lin

Hello David!

You can access your save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Blueprints. Select the correct folder where your blueprint is saved (local or cloud), zip the file and attach it here.

If you are having difficulty attaching files you can optionally use Google Drive. When sharing a google drive link please make sure it is set to be downloadable by anyone with the link.

Hi, I just want to ask should I share here blueprint or save? Because my mining ship could work on another save

Hello David!

If you could provide both, that would be great. That was we can have a look at both and see what is causing the issue :)

Okay, so I hope it will be solved soon. :)

I forget to say that just small drills have this bug. Large not

photo

So, did you find it? Or I just do not know how to use drill? :D

photo

Hello David!

Thank you for providing this. I have been testing it and so far, the mining ship/drill have been mining ore without an issue. Has the issue been happening every time you use the drill?

I can reproduce this bug with all my drilling rigs. (With large drills) And with one of my ships.

So it has nothing to do with the drilling-machine itself. I think it always happens, when the drill is not able to push the ore to some storage and becomes full. (And there is more than 1 drill per subgrid. As i mentioned before, it is not happen with 1 drill per subgrid)

Perhaps it has to do with the performance of the conveyor system. (In my savegame it takes half a minute for sorters to pull an item)

photo

I will try to record it and then I send it.

photo

So, it is happening only when I am mining Iron but previously it was happening with all ores. Just watch, here is video. :D

It has been a long while, so I don't have that save anymore. Rereading my previous comments, it seems that this issue is a combinaison of several problems. I've experienced this issue persisting through reloads which means that there is a variable somewhere which is not reset when reloading a game. I've noticed that sometime, the action bar misbehaves. I've also noticed that planet voxels are not affected by this bug, but that boulders are. You've potentially got 3 separate issues combining to create this bug.

photo

Just here to say this is plaguing our server as well. In the past, grinding down the drill and replacing it seemed to fix the issue, however that doesn't seem to work now. I have a single drill on a small block mining ship.

photo

Hello All!

With David's save and blueprint, I have managed to reproduce the issue. It hasn't been 100% of the time, I have had either no stone or iron ore mining, only iron ore not mining and sometimes both are mining as they should. I have taken in everyone's information and videos which I really appreciate. This has now been reported internally.

This is happening to me and I have recorded issues with both the hand drill and the ship drill, and I am currently looking for a work around. Here are my videos, I won't repeat the details since it is exactly the same issue everyone else here has described.

Laura, after you kind folks look into this, can I add that I would like to be able to build onto half blocks? Especially for light ships.

photo
1

I also want to add that I experimented with this some on a modded server as well as on single player and I am pretty sure at this point that there are some ore deposits that are bugged. In my unmodded, vanilla single player creative game, the ground around the gold ore deposit I could drill before was impossible to drill through on a reload with a different drill. In multiplayer, I have had some ore deposits bugged so only the ship drill cannot penetrate them, or bugged so that the hand drill can't either (but you can push inside the mesh), or have had them work perfectly fine. The pattern suggests the deposits are themselves glitched.
