Bugs with hinge

Here are the problems I found with hinges, I have run several tests (on earth like) and found that:


Torque does not actually function on any of the three hinge (small grid, 3x3 small, and large grid,) I had hinge+piston+hinge+hinge+piston+drill the first Hinge is just not strong enough (both Large grid and small) to lift this combo, torque should be able to push this over the limit but it does not do anything.


3X3 small grid attaching to large Hinge joint calls clang (causes an explosion) on all my tests


3X3 small grid still sees itself as small grid for purpose of block placement after the joint (may be part of above issue)


3x3 small grid does not have the option to add a large or small head (assuming the head is meant to be either a small or large size block.

I mean this in reference to the fact that we can use different heads on rotors to have a subgrid have large blocks on what is otherwise a small grid ship, or vice versa, with the 3X3 hinge it is the same size as the large grid hinge, and uses what looks like the same head as such but in my testing the 3X3 still sees itself as small grid on both ends. The fact we cannot alter this is I think a bug.

Hello,

I just tried the Torque and it was working for me (up to 1000 MNm).

Please, can you upload a world or blueprint where the issue of Torque not having effect happens? (Steam link would be enough too).

I have tested this deeper so here is the result of my test, in the attached arm test with the drill head attached anything below about 60 degrees as a starting position the drill arm will not lift (though a clang induced bounce will occur if you raise the lower limit above the current position,) This is true for any level of torque. Without the drill on the end it will lift just fine at less then 1MNm. 60 degrees and above it will move just fine with the drill attached, again at less then 1 MNm of force. this reads to me that either the torque is not referencing an actual calculation as it implies, or the drill block requires more then 1000MNm of force to lift above 60 degrees incline and less then 1MNm for the 60 - 90 degree range.

I have a similar if not the same issue. The issue appears to steam from the use of a piston connected to the hinge.

See this video, where it appears if you have enough weight connected between the hinge and the piston it works fine, but without enough weight the hinge is unable to lift it up.

I'm having this same issue. In small grid, I have a piston, hinge, piston drill and as soon as I place a second drill the hinge losing all strength. When I take away the second drill, the hinge can move again. This is not consistent. I've built this design before with 4 drills and never had a problem. I also have this issue with the larger hinges when I tried making a folding out ramp. Hinge, 5 blocks, hinge, hinge and 5 blocks. After extending and retracting the ramp one time, it suddenly loses strength and no longer can move.

Exact same problem here, had a refueling arm I was working on, had hinge - piston - hinge - conveyor - hinge - piston it would only work for the first hinge semi reliably

I am having the same issue with a large grid arrangement Hinge, Hinge part=> Piston => Hinge, Hinge Part => Hinge Part, Hinge => Piston => Hinge, Hinge Part => 9 drills in a 3x3 arrangement.

For the base Hinge I am using 3 hinges at this time, grouped in parallel. Even then I had to increase torque to 43MNm. For a single hinge even 10000MNm did not work. This implies the hinge directly connected to the piston is not generating significant torque.

Same here Hinge>Advanced Rotor>5 Pistons and it's barely goes up to 90°, even one block more and it immediately moved down.

The whole construction shows downwards.

I'm having issues with the hinge as well. Worked fine last time.

I add another arm with the exact same setup and now nothing works (Storage, Conveyor, Piston, Hinge, Drill). So disappointing to spend so much of our time engineering to have to halt and wait, again. For bugs to be fixed so the game is enjoyable on an engineering level. I really hope these guys fix the issue. Not worth our time if proposed mechanics do not work. Grind away to be jammed up by a hinge.

I get the same result with a hinge - piston - drill. Grinding off the drill causes the hinge to work properly again. So I've taken to grinding it off, lifting it out of the hole, locking it, welding it back on, then letting it fall into the hole. Very weird.

2 Months later. More updates, patches and DLC are added to SE. No word on fixing Hinges. This is disappointing on an epic scale. Shame on you Keen Software. Don't fix whats broken but keep ploughing forward and not fixing issues they have created. I will copy this thread and all other Broken Hinge threads. Send out to all Discord groups, FB Groups and Steam Friends to do the same to make all SE players aware of this very disappointing outcome from Keen Software. I used to host a dedicated server. I no longer do and wish I could get my money back. If anyone is reading this, Keen Software 2/10

Hello All,

I see Space Ork linked to this thread where I managed to reproduce an issue with the daisy-chaining on hinges. This is now awaiting a fix. This was in relation to the torque so may have an effect on the reported issues here.
