Use for super deep mines

Put some ores very deep under ground. While leaving some ores in smaller quantities on the surface. The surface would have ores like: Tin, Iron, copper.

While the deep would have: Gold, silver, iron.

This would also make for more long term dedicated mines.

This will make elevators something useful.

Could just make it the top of the vein is on top and you got to dig deeper and deeper to get more of the vein. Otherwise having to dig and try and find ore will be annoying since trying to find ore already can be painful, there no ore detector like in Space Engineers and there is no ore seeker or something that will say 'here be ores'

This is how it used to be. We even put some higher quality ores under the regular ores. We had non-stop complaints about players not being able to find ores. We tried several ways to inform players but it was just too hard for many. This is why we changed to making all ores visible.

I mean theres still ore patches on the surface that are normally spotable

They extend very deep into the ground and around 500 or more meters it becomes a massive vein which can go for kilometers (I mean iron BTW) Gold and silver would be a bit harder to find

The reason for the idea is the game feels pretty dull when it comes to mining. I feel there should be semi optional challenge when it comes to mining. Like building, you can either stay close to the ground and just build little buildings rarely going above a few floors. Or try to build a massive castle. This is a good example for you can get by fine off little buildings, but the challenge for big ones is still there.

Same would be for mining, The option for cheap and easy surface mining is still viable. But the challenge for building a complex mine is still there.

You could combine this with the NPCs idea to allow the player to "hire" a prospector who would go out and mark locations of possible ores on the map in a radius around where the player sent them.

I would love to see low yield ores on the surface and high yield and rarer ores deeper down. The ore veins in ME are far inferior to SE's much more unique and dynamic veins that can be found all over the planets. Even a 10m or less detection system similar to SE to simulate the engineer recognizing traces of ore and material nearby when they have a pickaxe equipped is a better solution than having everything surface visible only, but barely skindeep into the planet.

Breaking news, idiots ruin game for everyone else. I think it would be a good idea to put ore veins inside mountains for several reasons:

1) players know there will be ore in there, so if they dig long enough they will find it.

2) players who like to build on mountains like I do can still get ore ok.

3) ore veins could go super deep inside the mountains.

For sure you could still have the same surface patches in plains and stuff but mountains are the sites of ancient tectonic activity, thrusting earth goop from the center to the surface, rich in the metals. Also, considering you can dig to the middle of the planet and float around the gravity point, if you want to avoid having to generate ore through the entirety of the planet just have a depth that is "crust" aka safe to go in. Once you go in deep enough your player hits the mantle and starts burning to death.

Yes please. I am tired of servers being full of giant quarries and dugouts, and I'm tired of soiling beautiful landscapes to make them myself. Large ore veins could be hidden in mountains or under flat ground. A small amount of poor quality ore or discolored terrain that the player could follow in the early game which you would then follow to large underground ore veins (or maybe even caves.) with large areas of underground ore similar to Space Engineers planet side mining ore veins.

What might work better is if there were certain biomes for certain ores so you could put larger quantities for example in mountains you would find copper or iron... hence marking down a smaller location making it easier for people to find them while adding a in-game tutorial to guide them on locations of where you may find these certain ores

I was more thinking you can get the deep ores anywhere. But silver and gold are hard to find, For they would have no surface patch. It would be more dig around deep and hope you find one.

Two things:

All the yes to proper mines :D as it's not really worth engineering solutions for the pits we currently have other than a staircase id also like to see bigger pits both in depth and breadth.

and as for players not being able to find the ore maybe a tool could be made that allows you to sample the ground and gives you a direction like the maps do atm "Large Rich Iron ore vein due north extremely close" then when your on top of it the visual aspect of the deposit kicks in :D

The only ores which would have very large veins should be silver gold and iron. The rest just leave as little surface patches. Iron would have a surface path which would extend deep into the ground. Until it hit the main vein. While gold and silver should be a bit harder to find, for its gold and silver. And finding a super vein of it while set you up for life when it comes to gold and silver. So there should be a challenge getting it.

make this a server option unique to each planet as it is first drawn? if someone wants deep or layered ore allow it as an option.

note without fast travel going from one part of the world to another, lets say with an inventory of 21, can be brutal experience imho. i think Keen is wise in balancing fun with a mining game -- again making this a player setup option a good solution for all?

i for one would hate spending human hours digging in a deep mine, seriously sounds depressing and not fun at all... digging voxels looking for ore also sounds like a different game, or a non multiplayer thing?

i can always boot up a creative map and fly around marking down all ore i find because every world boots the same locations for all ore, my joy isnt deeper ore but randomly placed ore! or new ore popping into a location through hard to explain geographical events like an earthquake revealing a silver vein on a side of a MT?

One thing that i'd like to note that would have a negative impact is server file size. Voxel changes take up a lot of file space, so deeper holes mean more voxel change, then multiply that by every mine dug. server I play on is 27mb takes 5-15minutes to load, depending on server population. That with most of the houses being mindful of voxel size, It still becomes an issue on large servers.

Maybe make voxel file storage a little more efficient before doing this idea.

Maybe you can bring some good places with or on treasure maps, so we can find the good points that somebody have found long before. So you will sometimes find a treasure chest, sometimes a good spot for a mine.
