Fix tree LODs
Submitted
Trees (and probably other kind of plants) are too demanding on GPU. Because they have too much polygons? There is a video setting for view distance of terrain that affects how far trees can be seen. This setting helps to reduce GPU load of trees but at a very annoying cost that removes trees entirely rather than turning them in to simpler 3d models. Isn't it possible to make simpler enough 3d models for trees that are far away from player while not putting too much load on GPUs. I have gtx1080 but still can't get 60fps at 1080p resolution if I turn distant trees ON by increasing view distance of them. I think Space Engineers' trees have less impact on GPU because of their lower number of polygons?
Trees have LOD's. They even turn into instanced billboards for their far LOD. There are two main performance issues with trees: Alpha blending and shadows. We are improving our tree models to use less alpha blending for 0.7 so this should help some. Shadows are quite costly for complex geometry. There are a lot of trees so they cast a lot of complex shadows. Try standing in a forest and changing your shadow settings to see the difference it makes. It's usually a noticeable amount. The reason trees don't have as much impact in Space Engineers is that Space Engineers doesn't use as many of them. We just have a lot of trees.

I don't want to be a harsh critic but new tree LODs are very bad. Compare tree LODs of these two: 2019 & 2015
I think it lacks some depth.
New 3d tree models, variants and new tree features are great though.
