Take off Spacesuit

I see we have the new beds. But if you're going to lie down in a bed in your spacesuit then you technically don't need a bed. You can lie down in your spacesuit anywhere and be just as comfortable. So your spacesuit is basically a bed.


So I've always thought wouldn't it be nice if we could take off our space suits?

  • It would give players a sense of separation between hostile environments and safe environments. So that when your suit is off it emphasizes the feeling that you are more safe, but leaves you vulnerable.
  • You could have a space suit locker or a location where your leave/store/hang/display your space suit.
  • You would either start the game with your spacesuit on or in a locker nearby.
  • It would compliment spacesuit fabrication and upgrading well. If you die perhaps you need to make a new spacesuit or have extra one's on hand in a wall storage unit on display/in a locker.
  • Promotes players building safeguards into their bases in case of breach. So more double airlocks, and sectioned off areas of a base to protect them until they can grab their spacesuits. Perhaps even strategic locations to place spacesuit lockers.
  • Adds to immersion and detailing of the world. You are putting on your suit to go to space, to do something more dangerous, or something in a hostile environment, to do combat etc.
  • The jetpack could be separate, stored in the same locker, or worn and taken off independently of the suit (though it could stay connected to the suit to avoid over complication).
  • Finally it would allow players to lie down in a bed without a spacesuit.

Would be neat for SE2 to copy Empyrion: Galactic Survival in terms of how the suit is handled

How exactly was it handled in Empyrion? Unfortunately I never played that game.

You basically have a suit slot in your inventory where you can put different suits or just no suit.

Another benefit of this. It would mean you could have a new type of scan - scan the atmosphere of a planet to determine whether you need to wear your spacesuit when you go outside.

I don't think it's going to be that simple.

- The planet has an unbreathable atmosphere - OK, a spacesuit is required.

- The planet has a breathable atmosphere.

- - The planet has an Earth-type biosphere - there's nothing for a space engineer to do on it, it's already occupied by the human race.

- - The planet does not have a Earth-type biosphere - alien biosphere is dangerous, spacesuit required

We build a base to be safe from the elements and experience that safety. But if we always have our suit on it fills in for the safety of a base. We are always safe basically so long as we have a way to recharge the suit and get O2. So in this way the state of always being in a space suit is less immersive.


The idea of being suitless in a base, having a place to store suits or upgrade them, and running for a suit when there is a breach just really appeals to me. And designing a base to have airlocks/redundancies because if there is a breach I would be vulnerable without a suit, it just seems more immersive and like deeper survival gameplay to me.
