I'm not a fan of P autoconnection.

Far larger ships, seeing if the connector is close enough is very difficult. If the ship has a flat bottom, and slight pitch or yaw with respect to the platform will make the ship bounce and not connect.

If there are landing gear blocks they will, most likely, lock before the connector, or cause the ship to bounce rather than lock.

There have been times when the lock appears to has worked but the two connectors are misaligned and so the connection does not work.

If I use 3rd person view to align before touching P, the viewpoint jumps dramatically on a successful lock to a connector. An interesting success signal.

Anyway, if there are two connectors in range of each other , can you make forming a good connection be the first priority, bouncing the ship into finally position as needed. then locking any landing gear now in lockable proximity to to the environment.

once we have cameras and remote blocks, it'll be possible to create docking setups, that make lining up connectors easier.

Problematic P-ing had been an issue in SE1 for a long time. It was greatly improved by the additional parking option check box. The current SE2 parking option, though improved, is basic and lacks finesse, I would go as far a saying it is quick and dirty !

How much effort would it really take to align two independent grids orthogonally to make a connection between the nominated connectors on either grid automatically ?

My own thoughts turn to mechanisms of orientation references, docking approach and departing directions.

Automated docking may require multiple position stages to navigate safely around obstacles that may block access directions.

Some mechanism may be necessary to check grid to grid compatibility for docking between any two connectors, such as grid size and concave connector positioning. I would like to see a kind of automated traffic control for space stations and busy areas to check such things. This could also arrange cue stacking for multiple ship landing requests. This may seem over the top, but how else do you make the game feel alive,
