Drone Support (more 25cm blocks)

Players would love to build smaller drones and ships so having more 25cm functional blocks would help.

25cm blocks:

  • Reaction Control Thrusters - Thrusters that do slight attitude adjustments, they could be 1 direction and 1 thruster, or a multi-block with 2-3 directions.
  • Smaller/flatter atmos thrusters perhaps taking the footprint of small batteries.
  • Remote Control / Computer
  • Gyroscope
  • Merge block — which would also help with airlocks as another application.

I can't wait to make a self-replicating drone (von Neumann probe) in SE1. It's theoretically possible, but there's a lot of hassle with getting the blocks to match. A 25cm grid where you can offset one large block relative to each other or place 25cm blocks would greatly simplify the creation of such a thing.

Are we gonna get 25cm functional blocks? like 25cm thrusters and conveyors? please god, i want to make small drones.

I wonder if you'll able to do this to small drones with removable batteries.
Captain Matthew (CK82)
Yeah but think of one of theses powering a mech or a drone, a small long term compact power supply.
RaiderRat

More options for drone stuff would be good on top of the ai blocks we got.

I hope we get some sort of functionality for drones soon.
Hrothgar, Eater of Elves

Repair drones would be viable with small enough welder blocks though.
gruller65
i hope they make detail sized parts for drones.

I believe it was said that micro-grids will be a thing so 25cm drones are a possibility.

btw were there any statements on whether there will be 25cm functional blocks? To make small drones etc. Some players definitely discussed this before here, but I wonder if we got any info from devs on it? the thought of making small fpv drones is so seductive...XD

Even still the idea of then giving us small rcs thruster is still a good one (if anyone remembers the old rcs thrusters mod for SE1, they were the hight of a camera). It would make drones far easier to build and make fit inside a hallway or passage way
Parcival
A vent system and little drones that can fly throughout the ship would be awesome. Just to clarify, I mean like drones you can build with the smallest grid size. I hope that they add tiny thrusters so I can build tiny drones.

Give me some tiny thrusters, tiny reactors, tiny batteries and tiny cameras and I can make you a swarm of murder drones that can cut into a ship and cause manmade horrors beyond comprehension.
Alzumi
25cm conveyors definitely needed to make small hydro suicide drones. 25cm suicide bomber drones.
RayvenQ

I mean 25cm functional stuff, at least some could be in the plans for drones and automation but thats possibly the future.
Crocoli
I honestly hope we get 25cm thrusters in the future
capslfern

cant wait for insanely tiny drones that fit through doors
Voyevoda
tiny 25cm drone with a 25cm drill that burrows under people's base and plays Friday until the batteries die. I just want a tiny little drone to follow me around playing taylor swift songs through the speaker block.

I imagine a drone might need smaller welding block version, something at least 0.5m big, since people will want repair bots.

There should be radiation zones that only drones can access - lets say if your reactor gets damage, such a zone would be created.

This is a great idea and it's one way to tie into survival gameplay/environment damage with engineering.

This would be amazing. Yes please. And it would be a great thing to release when they release automaton like blocks.

Yeah, it would be nice to make drones that are tiny compared to the ones we could make from SE1.

Some people have also been asking for 25cm wheels, and it makes sense if you wanted rover drone type vehicles.

Having smaller automated ships and rovers because of the 25cm block size would be cool.

Mini drones, build-able with very few materials, could work well to complement a nerfed jet pack flight. In other topics people like me have argued that jet pack flight on planets should be far more limited. But that would also provide an incentive to find ways around the resulting difficulties. Such as building a mini drone to do things like scouting or placing parts where the player cannot easily reach.

For that purpose, I suggest:

1) The suit includes a limited range remote control, which does not require building a remote control station on the ground. Think 1-2 km range from the suit, beyond that the drone loses contact and crashes.

2) Smaller thrusters and other flight relevant blocks as requested by Valourant

3) Mini tool blocks. similar to the beginner hand tools in capability.

4) A blueprint for a very basic scout drone that the player gets "for free" with the suit. That would allow fast access to some recon capability and could work as intro to blueprint building

@Rabiator,

Very well put. FPV drones are already a well-established real-world technology, and using a jetpack instead of a small drone often feels like a missed opportunity.

I really like the idea of introducing players to grids through a simple drone blueprint. Building your first small drone with minimal resources feels like a natural and meaningful first step. It teaches core concepts early on - what a grid is, how remote control works, how antenna range matters, gives you more flight time and worry less about recharging.

Instead of flying around like Iron Man, you would use the drone to place projections. Its toolbar could be focused purely on building blocks, rather than everything an engineer normally carries. This keeps things simple and purpose-driven.

Then you can start building more advanced drones with specialized roles (if you want to).
