Welding not consuming components before ore
Not Enough Votes
I am attempting to repair the drill rig, and the errors I was seeing said that I didn't have enough ore in the backpack to produce the necessary components.
One of these components was copper wire. I had 36 of them in my backpack that I had been picking up from around the game. I applied the iron to complete the drill, but copper remained unchecked at 60 copper. I had to go get copper from my ship to complete the drill, which required 60 copper.
I was expecting the backpack to use the wire that was already present.
(FYI I've been stockpiling ores and components in my ship to carry with me between missions, so I already had them available for use.)
I like this feedback
As a follow-up, I went back to my ship to get some copper (404 of them), and the welder wasn't letting me finish the drill. It was not accepting any copper. My backpack is not full. Drill is counted as complete on the mission, I just can't complete welding it.

I just noticed that when you have the welder up, you can switch between raw ore mode and component mode using the R key. When in component mode, the welder is taking components out of my inventory before the ore.
For example, when welding conveyors, it requires steel plates and steel tubes. I had some steel tubes stockpiled, so I put them in my inventory. When I welded the conveyors using iron ore and steel tubes, it used the ore for the plates but used the steel pipes when it needed to.
When I switched to ore mode, it used the ore exclusively for all parts and left the steel tubes in my inventory alone.
For those that want to use components, bring up your welder and hit the R key to switch to component mode.

There really should be a smart construction option where the game uses whichever fits better to what you build.
Example:
You need 1100kg of iron or 100 plates to finish something and you have 100 plates but only 900kg of iron in your backpack, the game should instead prioritise using the 100 plates available instead of throwing an error about lacking iron without needing to switch to component mode explicitly.
