SE1 has a plugin for a very well-functioning binocular as a tool...
Integrating a similar function into a helmet/space suit would certainly be useful, as would integrating infrared and thermal imaging. And possibly also an information system for object recognition, a mineral analyzer, and similar information and navigation functions.

Binoculars have existed for a very long time, and while I think a camera with zoom, thermal imaging, or other forms of optical enhancement should be a character tool instead of part of a standard suit-helmet, it would at least be nice to have something.

Have you ever tried to use a pair of binoculars whilst wearing a space helmet? The thought of having to open up the visor in the vacuum of space, might as well have a cigarette while you are at it.

Deon - Of course such binoculars exist; technically, it's not a problem. For example, binoculars for use in/with gas masks... They're just not available in regular stores; they're produced in small batches or even individually.

Binoculars are just a lazy reference to indicate how long people have known having some hand-held "optical zoom" is useful. Most smartphones now days have a high-resolution camera with a zoom feature, stick on the mother of all drop-resistant cases and a handle to make use in bulky suit-gloves easy and there's your camera-tool.

For at least a decade, I have been using winter and cycling gloves with a piece of conductive fabric sewn onto them to operate my touchscreen mobile phone.

Operating devices with touch screen can be difficult with gloves on.
Fat finger problem.
