By this I mean more interactions between the NPCs and the Player(s) along with more opportunities.
For instance, I would like to see some Enemy NPC ships flying around whilst on a planet. I think this could really give the game a sense of danger and complexity.
(In space and planetary) I also think this should come with more enemy starting factions, so instead of just being the SPAT there are other enemy factions. I also think that the enemy factions should also be enemies with other factions. So that if these two where to ever cross paths they would get in to combat. Potentially leaving a crash site and salvage for the player to investigate.
Following on from this it would also be nice to see neutral and allied factions flying around. This would really extend the depth of the game. For instance if you was under attack by an enemy faction then by flying near an allied faction they would help you to elimate the threat.
Another idea from this would be a feature to be able to call for help from allied factions. This could be done Via antenna or beacon but it allows for you to call for help from any of your allied factions. After the fight is over they will simply fly away and despawn.
One other point to note is the addition of Military/ Combat focused factions. Becoming allies with these will aid you with bigger more powerful ships but they are harder to become allies with.
Would really appreciate if this was given some thought.

I like this idea as it can help with mining and such. Allowing you to do more exploration, trading, and combat. Heck, might even have a little bit of help with those as well. Have an NPC mine ore, and rocks, the turrets keeping them safe while you build ships, bases and the like.
Definitely make the ship more lively as well. I know we have auto pilot, but it would be awesome to have a "pilot" NPC to blame rather than my own piloting skills when they crash into another ship. Lol. Jokes aside, however, it would also make boarding Enemy NPC more dangerous than just opening a door and dealing with one or two interior turrets. Wondering if it's an automated ship, or if it's crewed. Would also give the small arms that we have more use than just shooting down random drones.

This would definitely add a nice edge of excitement to the game... Like a player also adding an enemy to a single player game at his / her leisure when the player has some half decent defenses; to open up exposure to an enemy when the player is ready, rather than an enemy growing to fast and over power the player before their ready. An NPC ally would be cool to stand by yourside physically in your base perhaps while other enemy NPC's try to attack... NPC vs NPC - ally vs enemy. .. Ally can help build blocks you set down and grabbing whatever resources from your storage; so their not randomly just building random junk around your base; but will help fend off an enemy.And/or the ally will have their own base and work with you against enemy.

Using similar script/code from Keen made drones with char skins should do fine

I was just thinking about this for the NPC Entities. In single or multiplayer (Definitely better in single player mode) it would be awesome if they had some sort of management thing. NPC Aid would definitely be something Mid game rather than End Game Content. That said, having the NPC Management in the Programable Block, or as it's own terminal would be awesome. Enable you to see what NPC's you have and where they're at. The idea of having a crew of NPC's on a large ship with you as the captain is epic. But with no way to manage them, it can and will become a mess and huge hassle to deal with.
Even a basic NPC system. Like say certain crew jobs: Pilot, Gunner, Engineer and Miner. All four roles have clear explanations as to what they do. And with that terminal idea (or programable block idea), we can go from there. Where are they assigned? What they're doing is going to be clear, but how far do you want the miners to go? Where do you want the Pilot to go? What's the Gunner's targets? What ship is the Engineer assigned to repair? Or is the Engineer in the base repairing/building ships and vehicles?
These questions would be awesome to think of for the terminal as sure, we could use the Welding Block to do repairs to the entire ship inside it, but those are broad building that might not fix the problem immediately. The Engineer's set to repair engines? Repair the connectors to feed ammo to the gunner? The engineer could also be used to help build your base. If you have the blueprint or the blocks laid down and the materials on hand, he could go to town while you are defending him against drones, or helping you finish. There's a lot of applications for the NPC Entity idea. What I suggested is just the tip of the ice burg that Keen Software can dive into.
Other NPC Class idea's could be Boarders. Both PC and NPC factions could have those. NPC coming in grinding your cargo and engine blocks without warning. Stealing your stuff! That would infuriate and allow for creative ways to repel them. Doubly so for builders who loves playing with the interior turret. Personally, I think that's underused to begin with. It's a very good weapon for inside bases and ships. Players would definitely have a warning if they have their radar on.
Merchant could be another, encountering them to actively trade (or raid) in space or on planets that have certain qualifications meet. Nothing huge like in the bases, maybe like a small amount of ore if they're walking, or a variety of goods if they are driving on planets or flying through space!
Guards would be a good one to consider as well. Defending your ground base. Gunners would serve this purpose for space as you wouldn't get out of the ship often to fight. But on the ground? Gunners would be in their turrets sure, but what if you didn't have the materials to make those? Or if they got shot down by PC's and in the process of repairing? The guards would be the last line of defense (If not a line meant to buy you time to rebuild.)
Of course as with all good things, it must be in moderation. With the BPU's being increased they could be worth a certain amount of BPU's as well when they're able to be hired. This'll ensure players don't go haywire and buy 100 of each. It'll ensure they are to manage what they have and debate what they could afford.

I think this should go in the next update along with some other PVE changes (such as any PVE at all). being able to fight people in my single player world would be awesome.
