This would be awesome and give all kinds of engineering challenges.

+ atmospheric burn up upon entry. this would need wing blocks or some sort of way to calculate lift on the blocks in the game.

Even basic aerodynamics would add a lot to player combat on planets, as well as giving people the already mentioned additional engineering challenges and variety in gameplay depending on your environment.
The performance should also be pretty good if you use a few rectangles to approximate the bounding box of grids. You could also give them a scalar value for lift calculated from the approximate filled area of each box to more accurately model the lift without any real impact on performance.
