Paint Tool Bug - "Unable to Place Light Armor Block"

Wobbot shared this bug 3 years ago
Solved

I recently purchased the Space Engineers: Ultimate Edition for Xbox One.

In the last week, I've only noted one bug that has been a cause for annoyance and headaches.

The Paint Tool, while it worked fine at first, no longer does. When I attempt to use the paint tool, it now tells me, "Unable to Place Light Armor Block" instead of painting the object I'm looking at.

After that happens, if I equip a block, place it, and build it, it will then be the color I was attempting to paint the previous preexisting block.

This bug occurred during a multiplayer game with a friend, and it has not fixed itself yet. I've tried holding different blocks and objects when accessing the paint tool, but when I try to paint I get the same error message as before, "Unable to Place Light Armor Block"

I was able to circumvent this issue by having my friend paint objects for me, but now he too is experiencing the bug. This now means that if we build something and want to add paint to it, we would have to deconstruct the blocks that we want to paint and replace them. This leads to wasted time, frustration, and in some cases, causes structural failure of what we're building.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, have you found a fix? It seems the bug strikes you at random and then hangs around indefinitely.

Also, to note, I'm unable to paint blocks regardless of who owns them. I receive the same error if it is a block I placed and built, or a block my friend did. The same goes for him. We are also in a Faction and have shared block access and progress.

Send help.

Hello,

we were able to reproduce the message "You need steel plates to build armor block", however recoloring still works for us. It would be really helpful to know when it stopped recoloring blocks. For now I reported the message about missing steel plates, hopefully it might help with your issue as well but it would be the best to know what caused it that you can not recolor blocks.

Any additional info would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Kind Regards

Hello!

Thank you for looking into it. As far as when it stopped recoloring blocks, I'm not exactly sure when it happened or what the cause of it was. All I know is that one moment I was able to paint objects and blocks with no issue, and then I got the error message later in the day when I tried to paint again.

Though it won't allow me to paint the blocks directly, it still recolors blocks that I would build in the future. To clarify, if I select red and try to paint, it won't let me paint due to the error message, but when I place a new block and build it, it will be red. That part of the paint system remains intact and functional.

My friend who was also experiencing the same error message was able to go back to painting normally without the error message, but we are unsure what caused the issue to be fixed for him. Perhaps it is intermittent? Or maybe only permanently affects the owner of the save/world that the game is running on?

The bug does not follow me across two different instances of the game. If we play on one save of a certain world with the bug, and then play on a different save of a different world, the bug will not be present on the newer save and world, so that is a plus at least!

Thank you for your help, I apologize that I don't have much more pertinent info for the issue.

It is good to know it's world specific. I will keep looking for the issue, however without further information on how it happened it may take some time. For now I would hope that fix of the error message will fix also your issue, I can't promise that though. I will leave this in 'Need more info' status, in case anyone else have any info as well.

We are seeing this issue in the "Home System" scenario in a Nitrado server. We have about 5 players all in the same faction. Originally I was able to recolor large grid blocks. Now I can not recolor any large grid blocks. The color will apply to any block that I place and finish.

Are you sure that the player who tries to recolor the grid is the major owner? A player is able to recolor only grids set to Nobody or with majority of his blocks -> Major Owner. Would you be able to reproduce the issue in a clean fresh world?

Thank you!

It does not appear to be scenario specific, we have seen the issue on both "homeSystem" and "Distant worlds" scenarios. From what I've seen if your the only player on you can paint, but it seems like if another person joins they might have the ability to paint removing yours. Like only a single player has paint privileges at a time. Have not been able to tell if one player automatically receives priority over the others or if its whomever joins first to the empty server.. And yes, we are trying to paint a ship we are currently building without any other player build help.

"Like only a single player has paint privileges at a time." - this still might be happening because of the major owner, if there is even a single block owned by a player, only this player will be able to recolor the grid

Does it happen also if all blocks on the ship are set to "Nobody" ?

This somewhat makes sense, but also not considering one day I was playing in my friends dedicated server and I was able to paint any block I wanted, no matter the owner. Then the next day I was only able to paint the blocks that I owned. I had the thought of you are only allowed to paint blocks owned by someone else if they are also on the server. I haven't fully tested this, but thought it deserved a mention.

Hi,

At this moment there are 2 ticket reported, which are related to this thread.

The first is incorrect warning being shown (missing steel plates) and the second is the correct warning is missing.

We will update the thread once we have more info on those issues.

Thank you.

Thank you for looking into it!

And thank you to everyone else who is experiencing the issue and spoke up about it.

One day we will be able to paint ridiculous designs on our fleet once more!
