Tested in multiplayer! (Just adding a couple of things to his report)
Game locks up/freezes when coloring the whole grid or a large area.
Doesn't happen when coloring with medium area or single blocks.
The results are consistent even when no one but me is inside the server.

Did you submit the crash log when it crashed? Because this report doesn't tell much.
I tested it in a local DS and shift+paint does not cause any crash, nor does full grid paint on a 10k blocks grid (and no freeze either).
