Using jetpack in space gets strange

George Zeng shared this bug 3 years ago
Won't Fix

After using the jetpack for a short period of time in space, the character starts to do something strange. It is akin to flying around with your head permanently tilted down with your chin resting on your chest. Turning the jetpack on and off again seems to reset this, especially if there is a gravity field present.

Hello,

can you provide us with a world file where this is happening to you?

Thanks for cooperation and have a nice day,

The issue apparently also exists now within a gravity field as well.

Hello, George!

Thank you for your world however I wasn't able to reproduce the issue. I would recommend you to delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file and ShaderCache folder (it means your game configuration will be deleted) and Verify your game files in Steam. Please let me know if it helped you.

Please see my below comment, I was encountering the same behaviour and isolated the apparent cause.

Managed to isolate this to being a result of flying around and depositing cargo (Left Alt modifier) with LAlt also being bound to 'look around'. For some reason, while using the jetpack (not while walking around), 'look around' lets you look up and down (but not left and right) independent from your character model. The resulting misalignment is fixed by either toggling the jetpack off/on, or swapping view to 3rd person and back (because of the bizarre lack of a 'recenter view' bind). I can think of no circumstance that I would ever want my crosshair to not be where I am pointing, so why is this even a thing?

I would like to keep LAlt bound to 'look around' since it keeps my WASD fingers free to handle movement while simultaneously rotating my view.

On a tangentially related note, It'd be nice to have an option (a keybind would be nice) to turn on/off the 'auto-leveling' which happens when you toggle the jetpack. As it stands I look where I want to fly, turn the jetpack on, have my view rudely pulled away from me, then have to point back where I was looking. (Same goes for turning it off). Especially irritating when using the jetpack in frequent bursts.

Hello,

Thank you for your report. However I wasn't able to reproduce it, could you please provide us reliable reproduction steps and a video? I was trying to:

  1. Jetpack enabled
  2. Press ALT
  3. Holding ALT + LMB to deposit components into the cargo container
  4. WSAD work for me all the time also with holding ALT

I tried this in 1st and 3rd person. Any additional information will be greatly appreciated!

Yes, WASD works fine. That is not the issue.

1. Jetpack enabled in first person

2. Hold ALT

3. Look up or down

4. Crosshair and character facing (movement direction) are now misaligned

The issue is that having free look bound to ALT leads to unintentionally changing this alignment (usually when using the ALT modifier to deposit cargo and turning while the modifier is still held)

Yes, changing the free-look bind would resolve this, but ALT is a good key to have it bound to (And the default) and the issue only exists while using the jetpack. I don't know why we're able to use free-look like this while the jetpack is on anyway, could be an oversight.

Hello!

Thank you for the information provided. I have been able to reproduce the character getting stuck looking downwards, as first mentioned and I have reported this,

Could I please ask for more information on the misalignment? I have not been able to reproduce this, Could you please provide a video if at all possible?

1 - Enable jetpack

2 - Hold 'look around' (Alt)

3 - Move mouse up or down so you are looking up or down with your body still facing 'forward'

4 - Release 'look around'

5 - Try flying

'Misalignment' = You do not fly where your crosshair is pointing

Hello Selina,

I'm afraid I still haven't been able to reproduce this. Is it possible you could supply a video? I see from your images that there is a clear change in view, however, I can't seem to achieve it. I am able to lock my view downwards releasing alt but unable to create misalignment as you have in your screenshots.
