Unable to join/host, Game branch inexplicably on SVN

A friend of mine is unable to join or host multiplayer games. The message pops up, "You need to be logged in with a user in order to join an online session." I noticed that his game branch indicates that it is 1.194.211 SVN while mine is 1.194.211 default. Accepting invites from me causes his game to crash shortly after startup, and he is unable to host or bring up the join list on his own.
As far as I can tell, he does not have any special launch options set nor is subscribed to any betas.
