Symmetry not working

I can't get symmetry mode to work anymore. I've been using it and it's been working just fine up until the past few days. I can place a line of symmetry, but it's only visible when I'm in symmetry placing mode, once I go back to placing blocks, it's gone, but reappears when I go to place another line of symmetry. I tried it in both a modded and fully unmodded save file, same result both times.

I have a very similar issue using Symmetry mode in survival. When I press the key to go into Symmetry mode, and I see the red-colored plane and I press Left Mouse Button, it places the block in my hand instead of setting the symmetry mode. I can keep pressing the key to change between the planes but I cannot set a plane of symmetry at all in survival. I don't know if this is a related issue or a separate bug, so I can make a new thread for tracking if this is unrelated.
