Space Engineers hangs on start up screen

First, I have over 830 hours in this game on my current laptop. My graphics drivers are up to date as are my windows 10 updates. I have NVidia Geforce 970M graphics card.

Every once in a while, I start up the game and I get a prompt saying it detects a better graphics card.. for whatever reason the setting gets bumped back down to the On-board Intel Display Adapter. Whatever. I switch it back to the NVidia, restart, play.

However, since yesterday the game simply will not run on the NVidia card. No change to the card, same driver.. I get the prompt indicating a better graphics card has been detected, select the NVidia card from the dropdown.. restart... then nothing. The game hangs on the Start Up Box.

I can keep trying until the cows come home.. give up, restart the laptop.. once again I see that the Intel Card is selected, get the prompt.. select the NVidia.. restart.. hang on the start up.

Yesterday, after pulling my hair out in frustration I completely uninstalled Space Engineers, deleted all the folders under steamapps/common as well as my AppData. Reinstalled, start it up, select NVidia, restart.. Game works fine. Play for a few hours until I shut it down to go to bed.

Next day (today).. start it up.. "A better graphics card has been detected".. *groan*.. select the NVidia card from the dropdown, restart.. hangs on the start up box.

Every time it hangs I have to CNTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the taskmanager, see that it's got "(Not Responding)" right after the process name, and have to kill it.

What is happening that the game that I've put over 830 hours into on an NVidia card just stops loading. And why did is just start happening out of the blue yesterday? I love this game enough that YESTERDAY I finally broke down and bought a monthly subscription for a dedicated server on SurvivalServers.com and THAT day is when I start having this shit happening.

Incidentally, and I don't know if its related or not, but no matter how many times I provide the Direct Connect IP address and select "Add to Favorites".. it is NEVER added to the favorites. This was BEFORE I uninstalled everything yesterday. After I reinstalled everything and fired it up, sure enough.. there in the favourites list is the IP address. Dummy that I am, I decided to remove it.. just to test and see if the "Add to Favorites" was working again. Nope. It's back to ignoring that check box.

The one things I did differently yesterday that I had never done before was to download and install the "Space Engineers Dedicated Server". I ran the game once using an existing single player save, saw that it all worked fine.. and then FTP'ed that save to my newly purchased SurvialServers.com host. Ever since that time, I've been having little to no luck getting this game to start up on my NVidia card.

Good lord why is there no consistency with this game?

I played this last night and this morning using the Intel Onboard card after posting the above ticket. Not optimal, bit of stutter, but ok overall. I noticed that there is no 'Ansel activation' blurb in the upper left corner though but whatever. I played for an hour or so this morning then shut down to go to work. Powered off the laptop.

I come home not 8 hours later, and fire it up. It fucking hangs on the splash screen.. twice. I have NOT touched the damn configs. There's been no updates. Only the power off and power on. Fine. I RESTART my laptop and try again.. this time the game starts up. This time there is an Ansel activation blurb. This time.. holy bat shit batman!! My fucking NVidia is selected by default AND seems to be working.. Who changed the settings? Do I have a friendly ghost? Mysterious. Don't understand what the fuck is happening, but hey.. NVidia card works. Win. Right? Bzzzzt. Wrong. The save won't load. For some damn reason Space Engineers now INSISTS my Steam is offline and wants me to change the settings of the game to offline and try to load again. I check steam - its online just peachy fine thank you very much. Internet connection is A-O-K. but who am I to argue? You want I should change game settings to offline and reload? ok. Roger that. Oh wait.. settings are already offline and game still won't load. Shut down game and restart. As it shuts down I can see the 'syncing' notification next to the title in Steam. Start it up again.. I get a little dialog saying it couldn't sync the game, play anyway? Fine. Play Anyway. Oh but now my saves aren't available. I try this several times with no luck, and then start updating THIS comment. But for shits and giggles I launch the game in another window. Holy Cow Shit! The game loads.. my last save load.. on my NVidia card!! It works.. almost as if out of pure spite.

I'm struggling to conceive of a mechanism that causes software to behave so erratically from one run to the next in the complete absence of any updates or changes that could affect it.

But whatever. I can play.. at least at this moment. Who knows what tomorrow brings.
