Ship grinder explodes randomly

Felix shared this bug 5 years ago
Won't Fix

I have a recurring but inconsistent problem with the small-ship grinder exploding when it comes into contact with another grid.

The grinder is mounted on a small-grid ship in 0G, the small ship is moving very slowly when the grinder comes into contact with the other grid (<2m/s), but i have also had it happen when stationary (though possibly gyro-rotating). The small ship weighs 123,232 KG sans cargo.

The grinder is not necessarily grinding anything when it explodes, I have had it explode when in use as well as when not in use.

The same behaviour has not yet been observed in the small-grid welder.

The same behaviour has not yet been observed in the large-grid grinder.

I have not narrowed down the exact cause, but a common denominator is that the grid that the grinder came into contact with when exploding is mounted on a rotor.

It does not appear to matter if the subgrid that is mounted on the rotor is a large or a small grid.

These explosions have so far only occured in multiplayer survival games.

Mods are in use on the server but no blocks added by these mods have been involved in either grid.

I've had this happen to me in the past and was just reminded about the issue a moment ago, was just deconstructing a mining transport in zero-g with my small ship grinder and the grinder blew up twice in a row. The large grid detached from the main body and was free floating, when grinded it would jostle the large grid and my grinder would explode. I built up a new one, tried to resume, and the same thing happened again.

This was in singleplayer and without mods

Hello!

I appreciate this thread is quite old, however, see it must still be persisting with the addition of a recent comment. Is it possible that I could have the blueprint and save this is affecting? The original user mentioned that it is reoccurring but inconsistent so it would be really helpful to have these if you've already had an issue with them before. Thank you for mentioning that mods are not involved -Zod- in yours, as this eliminates something for starters. Any steps for reproducing with your save would also be a big help/video etc :)

  • Saves
  • You can access your save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. There should be a folder with your SteamID and your saves.

Please zip the file and attach it here. If you are having difficulty attaching files you can optionally use Google Drive. When sharing a google drive link please make sure it is set to be downloadable by anyone with the link.

  • Blueprints
  • You can access your save files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Blueprints. Select the correct folder where your blueprint is saved (local or cloud), zip the file and attach it here.

Hello Laura,

Thank you for the reply! I have done the best I can to replicate my setup and scenario for you folks. Unfortunately as the original post said, the issue does not always present itself, it is inconsistent.

(See Pic 1) The grinding ship that was used is an Encounter Constructor Mk.2 that I lightly modified, I will have the blueprint attached.

(See Pic 2) The ship in question that I was disassembling was the Mining Hauler, I went back into my save and set up the exact ship and how it was attached when I disassembled it.

The small ship grinder would only explode when a part of the large grid would get disconnected from the original ship and was free-floating while being grinded. (See Pic 3) In my most recent scenario my grinder was exploding when trying to grind the light armor and landing gear around the conveyor tubes. I had grinded down the large cargo container behind that held them all together so the landing gear and light armor were now free floating.

I believe what might be happening is the grinder shakes the large grid, making its movements erratic, and the mass behind the large grid damages the small grid when they come into contact. It would be interesting to find out the real cause if we can.

I tried to attach the Save file but it wouldn't let me upload it, for your convenience you can find it in the link below. Thank you again for looking into this.

Hello!

Thank you very much for updating the save file. I notice you have mods in this save. Have you run into the same issues your facing without having any installed? We usually as for a save without them for testing purposes. It would be great to know if not using them has made any difference for you?

Laura,

I forgot I had some mods on that one, they are all minor mods consisting of extra planets, increased speed to 150m/s, and increased ore detector range. All of those mods had no impact, I still ran into these issues with zero mods in my maps.

Hello!

Thank you for the clarification on the mods. I have been attempting to reproduce the issue that you're mentioning and appreciate all the screenshots and information. I'm not 100% sure about the steps as I know this doesn't happen every time but want to make sure I'm at least testing the correct area. In image 3, is it the general area or, a particular block? A video may be a great way to show the exact reproduction steps if at all possible.
