PC UI problems playing with controller

Kieran shared this bug 3 years ago
Won't Fix

This has been a topic before, numerous times, in numerous places, for years. A topic you've closed, multiple times, without fixing. It still exists. It's not constant, and often it does, in fact, work as intended, and you can switch back and forth. The kb+m UI will still, for reasons unknown, decide to paste itself to the screen, *even with no kb+m plugged into the PC*. Controller input will only briefly display the controller ui over top.

You can claim it's dual input detection until the cows come home, the fact of the matter is, it can't detect input from multiple sources when there is only one input source attached to the PC. That's kind of how PCs work. Like, computers 101.

These pictures demonstrate dual UIs displayed on stick input from an xbox one controller.

All "solutions" recommended by both support and players in previous posts have been followed.

It is NOT a permanent issue - but once it starts, even restarting the game doesn't fix it. Nor does unplugging the kb+m. It can start happening with no kb+m ever plugged in while the game is running.

Playing on a dedicated server hosted on the same PC.

Latest Nvidia drivers + windows version.

An issue that persists like this over 6+ years through multiple closed topics, driver updates, and OSes is not one that you can keep blaming on other people guys. It exists. It's annoying. It's on your end, either the game's code itself or its interaction with steam. Find it. Fix it. If I wanted to play with kb+m, I wouldn't be using a controller in the first place.

Hello, Kieran!

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. I appreciate you've said you have tried 'all solutions' but as I'm not sure what these are, will go over a few things again I apologise. The main issue that crops up a lot is the confliction with Steams input. Right-click on Space Engineers in Steam, Controller and disable steam input' this appears to fix the majority of people's issues here on the forum.

For us to report the issue, we need to be able to reproduce the issue. I appreciate that an issue that doesn't happen all the time can be frustrating but we need at least a clear way of reproducing the issue sometimes even if it's not 5 out of 5 attempts. Which controller are you using? Also, how is it connected? Bluetooth or wired? I use a Series X controller and don't have any issues once disable steam input is checked and playing wired. I appreciate the frustration but we would need reliable steps on how this happens to enable us to report it. If you notice anything that makes it happen a lot, please let me know. Any further information would be a great help :)

Kind Regards

I've got my steam settings done, it's an Elite Series 2, wired via USBC-USB to a USB3.0 port. 3 monitor setup, generally at least one other app on at least one other screen at all times - maybe Netflix, maybe Spotify, maybe just task manager.

"For us to report the issue, we need to be able to reproduce the issue."

The problem is, that's the problem. It's not consistent, at all. The game can be fine for hours with both forms of input, even switching back and forth - opening menus and typing with the keyboard, playing with the controller, etc. It doesn't seem to have any consistent cause. I am not at the moment sure whether it occurs in a solo game, as I've almost entirely been playing my own dedicated EOS crossplay server.

I have noticed that if it breaks playing my server, restarting the game doesn't fix it until the server is shut down - this may be an issue with the Dedicated Server Manager, or it may simply be because SE doesn't technically stop running on the PC while the server is running. Once the issue starts, disconnecting mouse + kb entirely and having only the controller plugged in does not fix the issue - like a flag has been switched somewhere, it keeps *expecting* input from an input type that doesn't even exist.

I do alt-tab frequently. Seems to work out ok the vast majority of the time. Haven't specifically noticed this causing it, but... haven't not noticed it either.

I'll try to make time for some more... abuse-the-software-until-it-breaks style play in the next few days, see if it happens in solo, alt-tab near constantly, that kind of thing.

Hello, Kieran!

Thank you for the further information. I do appreciate that it's frustrating that we need reliable steps to reproduce the issue especially if it isn't happening too frequently. If you could possibly try a bit more investigation like you have mentioned and hopefully come up with something that happens a little more often that would be great :)

Hello, Kieran!

Have you had a chance to do any further testing on this to provide some reliable steps for reproduction?
