Loss of internet causing Unexpected error

Won't Fix

After having played for 6 hours without issue, I experienced an "unloading world" notification with a crash back to main menu.

After looking into the logs, I can see this being reflected there as well:

After investigation, it turns out I had briefly lost internet connection dropping me from Steam.

A blip of 0.78 seconds caused by my router.

Is this expected behaviour where I crash back to main menu in a single player game?

Or is this a bug?

Please feel free to close this if this was expected.

Thanks!

Hello Gelleby!

I'm sorry you've experienced this issue. I have been trying to reproduce this issue by pulling out my ethernet cable and the game is not throwing me back to the menu at all. I have tried this on singleplayer and cannot seem to get this to happen to me too. Have you experienced this again? Does the same happen to you with pulling out ethernet cable or was it just the router itself? I appreciate you said this was on single-player and I assume set to offline rather than online inside the single-player mode?

Hi Laura,

Hope you're doing okay.

And I apologize, I should have attached a screenshot of my game settings.

I'm running my session in "Online mode": "Friends", but it's just me in the session.

There's no-one else in my game, no friends have joined. (I do have friends though :p)

When I have a friend in my session, I get the same error anyway; I unload world and my friend is disconnected (as his host is gone).

I would expect if I'm the `host` of a session and I lose internet, I wouldn't crash back to main menu, it would just disconnect any friends connected. No?

Or is this expected behaviour in an "Online mode": "Friends"-mode/session?

I would understand if it is, it just sucks as the unload world doesn't provide a save point.

I've not tested this with Steam in offline mode, but I'm assuming Online mode can't be set to Friends if your not online in steam?

Kind regards,

Bert

Hello Gelleby!

Thank you so much for the further information and screenshot. I've set my game up the same as you and tried pulling the ethernet or even just putting the PC into flight mode. Neither is throwing me out of the game at all. . I'm struggling to reproduce this. Is this happening in a particular game mode or world at all?

Hi Laura,

I think it's more about losing DNS and/or a blip in losing connectivity to Steam (Steam servers and/or Steam chat).

It's not really losing full internet, more of a momentary loss of signal

It happens in both creative and survival game modes. It's also happening in both an empty world and world with planets in it.

What does to code say to do with a host losing connectivity to Steam?

Thanks,

Gell

Hello Gelleby!

Thank you for the further information. Could you please try the following as it is still happening for you -

  • Verify your game files in Steam
  • Right click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

/bfSnH0rGoN-NgctSWBJN3LfvWZvgnfye9BrPgucxV0n8TDpNc-7yZYwSifdRXyl1quu20KGUNmHzSf6VGRbhWS4a_EYn2MclxJSOz6eVarmz-fhTWVaofVOAVZN_l_leF9dgQ5GF

  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file
  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated
