Large Cargo Container Explosion

In multiplayer server NA#4, I had a large grid ship with large cargo containers.

Each container was filled to the brim with stuff and lots of ice.

I left two refineries churning away at ore, and an o2/h2 generator to process the ice with enough solar-based battery power for days. I logged out.

When I logged back in an few hours later, all of the large cargo containers had exploded despite being on different parts of the ship.

I suspect the the refineries filled up and tried to push their contents into storage, but none of the small containers (large grid) were destroyed, and non of the connector-connected ships exploded. Just the large containers on the main ship (the one with the refineries).

The ship was stuck to an asteroid with landing gear.

The ship was not set to be a station.

The refineries were still running when I logged back in.

The server reset 10 minutes after I logged in the second time.

The only recoverable materials seems to be the raw refined materials that were in the assembler (which also blew up), since the more-distant large container did not have anything to recover.

I will try to reproduce this issue.

Last night I discovered the real issue.

The containers were impacted from an outside source, which explains why only the precious containers were so precisely effected, and why my initial forensics highlighted higher levels of damage on the outside of the ship.

Last night I encountered more explosions and the offender was kind enough to troll about it in chat.

I finally caught a glimpse of the respawn ships that were crashing into me. It seems that anyone who spawns “in spacesuit” or in “Spacepod” will always spawn next to another player, even an enemy.

After about two minutes of five or so purposeful backspace-respawns and gps drops, they can triangulate exactly where that nearby player is, and then use their unlimited respawn ships to target the same location again and again. The player who actually builds their ships and bases has no defense, because even if you jump away or cut power, the attacker will still spawn near you at your new location.

I tested this Griefing FEATURE myself, and yes, it is exceptionally easy to do, even with a variable distance and random direction. There is no point to building, traveling, or concealing your bases. They will always be found and destroyed by people who have no interest in “Engineering”.

This explains everything, so don’t spend any more time looking for problems with the containers and refineries.

Instead, you need to disable the “feature” that forces space-based spawning to occur “near” other players, and enforce escalating respawn timers.
