Jump drive / natural gravity bug

Peter Doyle shared this bug 3 years ago
Won't Fix

Just now a friend of mine and I were on an official Keen server, Keen NA#1, and were trying to jump toward the moon, we didn't have a marker on the close side so we were adjusting our jump distance bit by bit until it wasn't in the natural gravity field anymore. I understand this to be a common strategy and never had a problem with it until now.

It was only .05G, and would have most likely been survivable for our ship, so we prepared to turn and boost ourselves out of the gravity field, however I wasn't able to use the gyros or turn the ship. None of the thrusters accepted any input or fired. I tried to get out of the cockpit and re-enter (sometimes that fixes control issues for me) but it didn't do anything. I tried connecting to the ship via antenna and was able, but remote controlling it didn't allow us to fire the thrusters either, nor did using manual override on any specific thruster in the terminal. The ship's velocity read 0 m/s from the time of the jump and never changed.

Another half-minute or so later our controls suddenly became inverted. Trying to walk forward would make you walk backward or some other odd movement, and trying to turn on our jetpacks led to us being shot out of the ship and into an invisible room maybe 500m away (I assume it was the actual location of the ship desynced from the client). There was simply no way for us to get back to the control station to see if control had returned, and remote controlling never did. Things continued like this for another few minutes and neither the ship nor this 'invisible room' got any closer to the planet the entire time until randomly the ship exploded and we found ourselves on the surface of the moon.

We lost quite a few days of progress because it let us jump into a natural gravity field and then wouldn't let us do anything to get back out. It's incredibly frustrating.

Hello, Peter,

thanks for sharing your issue with us, sorry that it took so long to actually get to it.

Since it´s this old, let me first ask if you are still experiencing it, or was it just one time thing?

As I see you were on the public server, I take it, you don´t have any save regarding this issue, right? Or any other save where this issue would be easily replicable.

Can you share any more info, if there is any? Did it happen to you after this one case?

Thanks in advance for you reply.

Kind Regards

I don't have any saves, no, unfortunately. It only happened that one time on the public server and other than that I haven't experienced it again.

The only thing I might still have is the blueprint file for the ship we were using, although I'm not sure if that made any difference in the bug we encountered.

Hello, Peter,

thanks for coming back so soon :)

Well, me neither. Don´t know. Might. Might not. But if you can provide it, it would be great starting point.

It´s always good to test the issue in environment as close se possible to the original issue you experienced. Then I could go on and try it with different ships. But having yours that you experienced it with is always good.

Thanks.

I've encountered this before, several versions ago. It seems like a client desync that occurs after a jump near a planet. In my case I made several jumps around the same planet before it happened, so it's not a consistent issue. I think the workaround for a player experiencing this is to exit the server and come back in, as that forces the client to reload everything with fresh clean data.

Your subsequent attempts to control the ship may have flown it into the gravity field by accident.

Hello, Engineers!

Thanks for more info from Dementiurge, but I´m still not able to reproduce it.

Is it possible some of you may have better steps to reproduce rather than "jumping around planet"? Or if any of you have it, or might capture it on the video, that would be great help!

If not, I´m afraid we might be forced to close this issue as it seems rather edge case. I gave it decent number of tries (probably 40+) and yet, no luck. The onscreen message was always present and stopping me from either jump from, or way to close to the gravity field.

Thanks in advance for any reply and for your understanding.

Kind Regards

The ship I was using was pretty large, could it have anything to do with what part of the ship is used for gravity field detection? i.e. the control panel was outside the range but something else was inside?

Ill try to find the ship file for you, iirc I sent it to your support team after the bug to have it restored on the server so it should still be attached to the ticket somewhere. I'll give it a look when I'm home from work later.

Thanks for all your effort for an old and rare bug!

Hello, Engineers!

Because there is no new comment from you, and we are unable to reproduce the issue on our own, I will close this thread now as outdated.

If you or any other player will experience this issue again, please make a new thread and provide all needed info there.

Thank you for understanding.

Kind Regards
